Glover has been one of the most mysterious & interesting artists in recent years. With every new release, there has always been a redefinition of who Childish Gambino is and what story he conveys through this persona.
His return provides a political approach, lending multiple meanings to the juxtaposition found in the expertly directed music video. “This is America” is social commentary without shoving a singular message down the throat of Glover’s audience. This ambiguity is not only a part of his character, but provides the chance for wide interpretation.
“Saturday” on the other hand continues the fun, catchy funk sound from Glover’s previous project, “Awaken, My Love!” while adding a more traditional African flare. Both singles do so in that regard, mostly where percussion is concerned. Hopefully this is a sound that is prominent throughout Glover’s upcoming release.
