A double use for solar garden lights, whereby they can be used as intended, or their output power can be reused to form a power source. The output voltage is 5V, which is enabled by joining 2 of the solar light panels in series. Current is then multiplied by assembling multiples of the twin light solar panels together. Each solar panel produces 2.5V at 100mA, delivering 5V at 100mA with each pair.
In this case, for demonstration purposes, I have completely removed the individual panels from the solar garden lights, to create a neat and effective large panel. The output of the panel is 5V at a calculated 900mA.
In practice, the current is actually higher, at close to 1 Ampere. 5 Watts of solar power.
Very practical for charging devices, powerbanks, powering small electronics and, the main test, charging a cellphone in an emergency situation.
Extra 1 - because these panels are made of amorphous silicon they work really well in shade conditions.
Extra 2 - the panels are glass fronted, meaning they won't degrade anywhere near as quickly as epoxy coated garden light panels.
Such a build isn't really cost effective if the solar lights are bought solely to make a charger, but, does make sense if the usual purpose is to operate as solar garden lights. With a quick conversion, they can be repurposed during power outtages. Many people have many garden lights in their yards!
A simple method to convert with a plug instead, is to remove the batteries and run the positive and negative wires to a connector on each garden light. 10 in parallel, another 10 in parallel and then connect both strings in series. When finished with after a major power outtage event, put the batteries back in, unplug the connectors and the lights become regular solar lights again.
An emergency charging and powering solution, which otherwise is simply a set of nice garden feature lights.
