Style is Substance 2024-03-01 | Lav Diaz is an independent filmmaker from the Philippines and a significant voice in the slow cinema movement, or as he calls "emancipated cinema." Diaz's work is characterized by black-and-white digital photography, minimal camera movement, attention to the sociopolitical realities of the Philippines, and extremely long runtimes. Melancholia is Diaz's seven and a half hour study on the fractured Filipino identity. This video discusses the liberating potential for slow cinema, long runtimes, and minimalism in film.

Battleship Potemkin Anti-Montage (or Retracing Odessa Steps)

Style is Substance 2023-12-29 | The Odessa steps massacre sequence from Battleship Potemkin is one of the most influential, celebrated, and studied scenes in cinema. The sequence best illustrates director Sergei Eisenstein's Montage theory as contrasting shots are juxtaposed with one another to create a unifying picture.

Because I am a pretentious thinker, I can't help but ask what this scene would look like if it were stripped of its juxtapositions, cuts were removed, and individual shots were rearranged according to geography and character, rather than time and rhythm. This re-edit of Battleship Potemkin serves as an analytical study of Montage through its relative absence. Yes, Montage is still technically present, but the individual shots are arranged to tell individual stories about individual characters and locations, rather than a collective story about the collective body of characters. This short film (if we deem it one) is conservative in its construction in the interest of a progressive reexamination of the picture.

"My takeaway is that the 'anti-montage' is still all montage, but subtracting Eisenstein's form reveals that the musicality is lost despite the raw materials being there. It's like seeing all the chords that will be used in a song without putting them together to make that song yet. In a way, I think Michael Snow's Wavelength does something similar, although that's more about the camera having its own interpretation or phenomena different from a human's, but still not objective." - Isabelle Miller, filmmaker

Un Chien Andalusia

Style is Substance 2022-10-17 | "Debaser" is the opening track on DOOLITTLE the 1989 album by alternative rock band Pixies. The song makes explicit reference to "Un Chien Andalou" (1929), a surrealist short film by Luis Buñuel and Salvador Dalí. This unofficial music video combines scenes from Buñuel's film overlaid with vibrant colors and quick cuts from the official 'Debaser' music video and set to the song as featured on the studio album.

"I wish Luis Buñuel were still alive. He made a film about nothing in particular. The title was nonsense. With my stupid, pseudo-scholar, naïve, enthusiast, avant-garde-ish, amateurish way to watch 'Un Chien Andalou,' I thought: 'Yeah, I will make a song about it.' Cannibal Holocaust (1980) Cannibalizes Itself

Style is Substance 2022-03-18 | CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST (1980) is one of the most controversial and disturbing films ever made. Director Ruggero Deodato encourages us to ask what “civilized” means, if it means anything at all. The film explores how through media, the so-called “uncivilized” world is exploited by the so-called “civilized world.” However, one should question Deodato's hypocrisy, for he too exploits. Is there a method behind this madness?

Dantes Inferno (1911) — One Hell of a Film

Style is Substance 2022-02-18 | L'INFERNO (DANTE'S INFERNO) is the first feature film made in Italy, and is a relatively faithful adaptation of INFERNO, the first canticle of the 14th century epic poem THE DIVINE COMEDY, written by Dante Alighieri. The film, like the poem, follows Dante as he is guided by Roman poet Virgil through the nine circles of Hell during his holy mission to reach God.

This video study examines the film's relationship to the source material and its place in film history. We also take a closer look at Christianity's relationship to controversial subject matter.

In a Year of 13 Moons (1978) — Erwin or Elvira?

Style is Substance 2021-10-22 | "Detransitioning" is often a temporary compromise a transgender person makes for personal reasons. Others detransition because they realize they were never truly transgender. The latter is often dismissed in online circles by trans activists and grossly made into props by transphobes to promote a bigoted agenda.

Detransitioners should not be ignored and their gender identities should be respected. Unfortunately, political dogma and media analysis alike is often plagued by unintentional detransphobia at the service of promoting trans rights. This is a major limitation that ought to be challenged within trans activism.

This video study examines the role of gender within Rainer Werner Fassbinder's 1978 film IN A YEAR OF 13 MOONS, and read the protagonist as both a transgender woman (Elvira) and a detransitioner man (Erwin), and then explore what the film adds to the conversation about both types of people and their depictions within cinema at large.

Is Gaspar Noé Homophobic?

The Creepy Truth Behind Léon: The Professional (1994)

Style is Substance 2021-07-02 | After her family is killed in a drug raid, 12-year-old Mathilda is taken under the wing of Italian hitman Léon. The two form an emotional relationship where Léon acts as a surrogate father to Mathilda, all while refusing her romantic and sexual impulses towards him. This is where the film gets, um… concerning, to say the least. Oh, and the director may be a predator.

Boys Dont Cry (1999) — Problematic or Progressive?

Style is Substance 2021-04-12 | Kimberly Peirce's BOYS DON'T CRY (1999) narrativizes the last few weeks of the life of transgender man Brandon Teena, a life that ended in tragedy. For the most part, the film received critical acclaim and was generally well liked by the LGBT+ community. However, in recent years, the film has been seen in a less favorable light, receiving its fair share of criticism. While some transgender people feel represented, others feel exploited. Is this film problematic or is it progressive?

The Virgin Spring (1960) vs. The Last House on the Left (1972; 2009)

Style is Substance 2021-04-05 | Ingmar Bergman's medieval drama film THE VIRGIN SPRING (1960) tells the story of a father avenging his daughter who was raped and murdered by a group of criminals in the woods. Wes Craven's THE LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT (1972), and Denis Iliadis' remake (2009) follow the basic plot of Bergman's film but their deviations reflect culture's gradual shift into secularism and artists' individual sensibilities, creating an ongoing intertextual dialog.
