Create Powerful PCB Coils with Automation - KiCad Plugin Secrets!
updated
I thought this part was interesting enough for the main channel. Quite an elegant mechnism.
If you think PCBs are hard - check out these ones. We're doing a bit of a science experiment and attempting to Nickel plate our PCBS...
Varying degrees of success - but it was a fun experiment!
You can buy some nickel electrodes here (affiliate link): amzn.to/49A8Go3
Suitable vinegar (5%): amzn.to/3uBqT5E

You can find the tool here: github.com/uPesy/easyeda2kicad.py
It's a really nice tool that will download EasyEDA models from LCSC and load them into KiCad.
Pretty handy!
In the video I'm using an ESP32 module for the demo - but there is an official KiCad library already with some really nice 3D models. github.com/espressif/kicad-libraries
The only slightly annoying thing is that the 3D models are VRML so if you want them included in your PCB's 3D model you need to export in that format. Freecad (freecad.org) seems to handle this quite nicely, so it's not the end of the world. And if you can load it into Blender and export as Wavefront obj files for Fusion360.

The Stars:

⭐️ James Sharman@weirdboyjim
⭐️ Deshipu
They are pretty cool - what's really interesting is that they operate with the data line in a bus mode - all the LEDs get the serial data and each one has an address burned into it at manufacture time so they know which part of the data stream is for them.
Very clever stuff.
But we're not here to praise this product - we're here to take it apart and see if we can hack around with it. In this case the answer is a definite yes!

I've been meaning to update some of the functionality for a while now, but haven't had the time or the willpower.
I'm pretty happy with the results - it was a surprisingly interesting adventure with a bit of hacking around involved.
We've used ChatGPT to generate summaries and tags, and we've got it to make us a prompt that we can feed into MidJourney to generate some nice images for old posts.
The blog is now looking really good - check it out at blog.atomic14.com
I've been playing with my Raspberry Pi and I thought "Wouldn't it be fun to hook this up to ChatGPT" - watch the video if you think it's fun - or is it just silly...

I was just about to do some 3D printing and I took a look behind the printer. Good job I did! Apparently, this is a known issue (discovered about 5 years ago) with some Ender3 printers. But I knew nothing about it until now.
Luckily I'd just bought an InfiRay Infrared Camera after seeing it on BigClive's channel - you can pick one up here (affiliate link): https://s.click.aliexpress.com/e/_DcZoySN Make sure you get the macro lens as well!

I've got a bunch of these Philip's Hue lightbulbs lying around so I thought it might be fun to tear one down and see how it ticks. I made quite a mess.
And then I thought - why not try and reuse the control PCB?

I'm a real sucker for a gadget and I just couldn't resist buying one of these to try out. I'm actually pretty impressed - it works!
There are a few issues with the firmware, but it's being actively developed. I just need to think of some fun projects to do with it...

You can use ChatGPT for the script - I used Midjourney for the image - but other image generation AI are available. And then for the video you've got a few options. I'm using the D-ID service, which unfortunately you do have to pay for, but it seems pretty good. If you know of free alternatives, let me know!

GitHub actions are a really easy way to constantly check that your code compiles - they are free (up to a point) and they have the added benefit of letting you add build badges to your README file - a great way of showing how healthy your project is - and a healthy project will attract other people and contributors.
They constantly check your code so you know immediately if you've broken it. They can also prevent other people from breaking your code - it's a winner-winner chicken dinner situation.
You can find all the docs for the Arduino GitHub action here: github.com/arduino/compile-sketches
And Github's documentation here: docs.github.com/en/actions
And my blog post here: atomic14.com/2023/03/31/we-dont-need-no-stinking-badges.html
There are also actions for Platform.io here: docs.platformio.org/en/latest/integration/ci/github-actions.html

I've had my low-power ePaper display up and running for a while - it needs to be recharged every couple of months. But I got to thinking: "Can I run it off solar power?"
After my experiments with solar-powered Christmas lights, I wasn't convinced, but I reckon with a bit of energy scavenging it might actually be possible!
You can pick up the two power scavenging boards from here: https://s.click.aliexpress.com/e/_DmxNOY9 and here: https://s.click.aliexpress.com/e/_DkzYIKZ (affiliate links).

I've got a bunch of USB-C devices and wanted to make a portable power bank to fuel them on the go. Using 2 x 10,000mAh lithium cells and a charging board, I attempt to build my own DIY power bank.
But did it end up being a disaster or a success?
Watch the video to find out as I test the capacity and performance of the power bank and explore the reasons behind any discrepancies. With some unexpected results, this video is sure to keep you on the edge of your seat. Don't miss out on this electrifying experience!

Some really cool demos to try out - I'm already thinking of exciting projects I can do - not sure about the "Hair Segmentation" one though - not very relevant for me!
I'm amazed that this all runs in JavaScript in your browser. My machine is ancient and it still works really well.
