Open vs. Closed Loops Geothermal Systems MRCOOL 2023-08-28 | Geothermal heat pumps fall into two main categories - open and closed loop. A closed loop system uses a sealed network of pipes filled with a special fluid, called Propylene Glycol. During the summer, the fluid in the loop absorbs the heat in your home and sends it underground. Then, the ground's lower temperature cools it, and sends cool air into your home! It’s the same idea in Winter, just reversed - thanks to the reversing valve. The solution circulates underground and absorbs the earth’s heat. The heat is then transferred to the heat pump bringing your home to a comfortable temperature. Closed loops can be installed three different ways. Vertical, horizontal, or in a pond or lake. In an open loop system, water is the fluid in the loop, being drawn from a well or water source. It is circulated through the heat pump, and then released back into the ground or a body of water. The ambient temperature of the ground still acts on the piping as in a closed loop, however the water moving in and out of the system gives it its name ‘open loop’ because it dispenses the water after it runs through the piping. This option is only practical where there is an adequate supply of water from a well, pond or lake to be the source and the sink for the system. The sink being where the used water is released from the loop system.Both systems have their advantages. Open loop systems are very efficient, but they require a suitable water source. Closed loop systems are more versatile, working in various locations and climates. By harnessing the Earth’s stable temperature, geothermal heat pumps are energy-efficient, environmentally friendly, and offer consistent comfort year round. Whats a Geothermal Heat Pump? MRCOOL 2023-08-28 | What is a Geothermal Heat Pump?A geothermal heat pump functions like any conventional heat pump. The process is complicated and involves expansion valves, evaporators and condensers but the simplest explanation is that a heat pump pulls ambient heat from one location, whether inside the home or outside depending on the season, and transferring it to another location. So, in winter it’ll pull heat from outside, and move it into the home, and in summer the opposite.What differentiates geothermal is that conventional heat pumps gather their heat, and get rid of it, through the outside air, and are called ‘air source’. Geothermal systems, in contrast, transfer heat through long loops of liquid-filled pipe buried in the ground or in a well or other body of water, and are called ‘ground source’. What’s so special and efficient about the geothermal approach is the temperature beneath the ground stays a constant 50 degrees fahrenheit. So, instead of your system working overtime to pull heat from the frosty winter air it’s pulling from a naturally regulated and reliably moderate temperature.But what’s that mean for the homeowner? First, a geothermal heat pump can reduce heating and cooling bills by 30 to 70 percent! Second, geothermal systems don’t require a noisy outdoor fan to move air through its compressor coils, so geothermal units can be parked safely, and quietly, indoors. Third, geothermal reduces greenhouse gas emissions by the equivalent of planting roughly 750 trees. Finally, the Inflation Reduction ACt, passed in 2022, implements a 30% tax credit for geothermal heat pump projects constructed before January 1st, 2033.That concludes our brief dive into what a geothermal heat pump is, and the benefits of that approach to heating and cooling.Thanks for watching!
