(767) OED Online (世界最大の英英辞典) で handy という単語を引く 小人の足掻き 2022-09-09 | John Steinbeck の "Of Mice and Men" (映画化された作品) に出てくる handy の「喧嘩に強い」という意味合いを確認したくて OED Online を引き、ついでに handy という単語の他のすべての意味合いも調べ、その言葉の意味合いの歴史的な変遷と広がりを感じていたのですが、そういうプロセスがいかに楽しく、そして勉強になるかを皆さんに知ってもらいたくて、このビデオを作りました。OED Online は、もともと 4万ページに及ぶ Second Edition を 2000年から 2039年まで39年にもわたって作り上げる改訂版である Third Edition を少しずつ反映し続けているオンライン版の OED 辞書です。Wikipedia の The Oxford English Dictionary の項目にある解説にある通り、Oxford University Press は Third Edition を紙版では提供しない方針であり、CD-ROM 版も 2007 年版を最後に、それ以降の改訂版は発行しなくなりました。だから、2007年以降の改訂版については、OED Online で読むしか方法がないのです。西暦 2000 年からこの OED Online (つまり Second Edition と Third Edition との混合版) がネット上で提供されていますが、最初は年間の購読料が 38,000 円くらいでした。つい数年前から安くなり、今では年間で 18,000 円くらいです。正確に言うと、100 ポンドに日本の消費税である 10% が加わり、合計で 110 ポンドなので、日本円ではだいたい 18,000 円くらいなのです。僕は、26歳のとき（つまり今から40年も前）にサラリーマンをして稼いだお金のうちの一部をはたいて大阪梅田の紀伊国屋書店で compact edition (つまりルーペを使って読まないといけないような縮刷版) を買いました。その当時で、5万円でした。通常の紙版は20冊ですが、この compact edition は2冊にまとめてありました。しかしあまりに使いにくかったです。その当時は、全20巻くらいの紙版を買おうとしたら30万円くらいはしたと思います。その後、Second Edition が出版された直後に僕は30万円も出して paper version を買いました。その何年もあと、今度は CD-ROM 版が出たので、それをその当時の値段であった 10 万円ほどを払って買いました。そういうふうに何度も何度も買い直し、使おうと思って何度も何度も挫折してきました。そしてついに、今から10年ほど前、つまり 56 歳にもなってから（つまり最初に OED を買ってから30年も経ったあとに）、やっと僕は OED をかなり気楽に使えるようになったのです。そのあと 10 年間は、常に OED がないと気が済まない状態になりました。だからこそ、この 10 年間にわたって、ろくにおカネもないのに高い購読料金を払いながらこの OED Online を、ひと月あたり少なくとも 5 回、普通は 20 回くらい、多い時には 50 回とか 100 回くらい使うようになってきました。OED Online には、3か月に1度、たくさんの増補改訂済みの単語項目が入り込みます。そしてどんどんどんどん拡張を続けているのです。英語を本気でやるなら、OED Online は使わないと損です。
