In 1976, THIRTEEN aired "Paths of Rebellion: New York in the Revolution" as an American Bicentennial series exploring the political, military, and social history of New York State during the American Revolution.
Part one of "Paths of Rebellion" showcases the early strikes of the Revolutionary War along the New York and Vermont border through historical analysis and living history re-enactments. The Green Mountain Boys — led by Ethan Allen — unite with Colonel Benedict Arnold to launch a surprise nighttime raid on Fort Ticonderoga, seizing critical artillery for the early Patriot army.
The story continues north toward Montreal and Quebec, where harsh winter conditions and expiring troop enlistments reshaped early American military strategy. Re-enactors and historians reconstruct the 1776 Battle of Valcour Island on Lake Champlain, demonstrating how Benedict Arnold's hastily built fleet of wooden gunboats delayed a major British invasion and bought crucial time for the Continental Army.
