Ever notice that little curve at the bottom of your beverage can? It’s doing a lot more than you think.
In this week’s “Cans Are Cool”, we’re taking a quick look at the engineering behind the dome and chime — two features that make cans strong, stackable, and efficient to produce.
🔹 The dome is the inwardly curved bottom of the can (that dented-looking base). It’s formed in the bodymaker and helps the can resist the pressure of carbonated drinks.
🔹 The chime is the outer ring where the dome meets the vertical wall. It’s formed partially in the bodymaker, and reformed later in the base reformer. It gives the can a stable, stackable foundation.
Smarter design = stronger cans + less aluminum used!
Because yes, even the bottom of a can is cool. 😎
