INHALATION
I discovered that, among the natives in Southern Asia, those that smoked the Cannabis sativa (or Hashish, as called by them,) were rarely if ever afflicted with any disease of the throat, lungs or air passages; and the idea at once struck me that the fumes of the Cannabis sativa, or Hashish, which they relish so well must be a preventative, if not a cure, for the diseases, particularly if used by Inhalation in connection with the inward taking of the medicine. I find, after due examination and experience, that the inhaling of the vapour of the Cannabis sativa has a very marked and beneficial effect, and has so far, without a single exception, produced the most happy results.
By Inhalation, the remedy is directly addressed to the diseased organs and the integument. It is highly necessary at this time, when that dread disease, Consumption, and its kindred diseases, is sweeping to the grave so many thousands yearly, that each suffering patient should receive the benefit of the local as well as general treatment. I would not advise the use of Inhalation of any kind to the exclusion of general treatment; yet I consider it a useful adjuvant in the proper management of those fearful, lingering and often fatal diseases. Although Inhalation alone, in the incipient or first stage of the disease, will, in most eases, entirely eradicate it, yet if a fellow sufferer applies to me for advice, I cannot feel that I have done my whole duty to him unless I have advised both general and local treatment, For the benefit of the sufferer, I would say, in conclusion, that I now have prepared, under my supervision, by my own chemist, a convenient concentrated mixture of the Cannabis sativa and Iodine, for the purpose of Inhaling, together with a neat and convenient Inhaler that any child can which I will be happy to send to, such as desire it, at about the cost of manufacture, charging no profit for time and trouble. All I wish is to guard myself against a positive loss of funds.
Directions for Using the Inhaler.—Put one teaspoonful of the Inhaling Mixture in the large bowl of the Inhaler; then pour in warm water until the bowl is two thirds full. Shut the cover, and let it stand for about one or two minutes; then place the pipe, or mouthpiece, attached to the end of the India rubber tube, in the mouth, and draw gently for about five minutes, until the mixture is cool and the vapour bus ceased to pass through the pipe, taking pains, while drawing at the pipe or mouthpiece to take a full respiration, so as to fill the lung, and enable the vapour to reach every part. Take particular pains to clean the Inhaler carefully after each use.
The price of the Inhaler, when bought buy the quantity, is $24 per dozen, $2 each, at which price they will be sent to applicants, with no extra charge for time and trouble. One bottle of the Mixture for inhaling—sufficient for from two to three weeks use -will cost you $1, which barely covers the cost of the raw material. By remitting $5, the Rev. C. B. Burnett will send you, by express, one bottle of the prepared Cannabis sativa, carefully prepared according to the recipe; one bottle of the Inhaling Mixture, together with a well selected and durable Inhaler. They will be all safely packed in a strong wooden box, and promptly forwarded as directed,
Through the exertions of the Rev. C. S. Burnett, and a number of his kind-hearted friends, who have seen the good effects of the Cannabis sativa Syrup and the Inhaling Mixture upon the consumptive, they have succeeded in raising, by means of Public Lectures, contributions, and private subscriptions, a small fund, to be appropriated for the benefit of the worthy poor, who are unfortunately afflicted with any of the above diseases. Consequently none need suffer for the want of relief. Any worthy person, needing relief, and being unable to obtain the Cannabis sativa Syrup and Inhaling Mixture, for want of the necessary funds, by addressing Mr. Burnett, stating condition, age, &c. &e, and enclosing a certificate or recommendation from the Pastor of their parish, Postmaster, or some other prominent citizen, and the price of an Inhaler, $2, a supply of the Cannabis Sativa Syrup, Inhaling Mixture, and all the necessaries for treatment, will be forwarded free of charge, and will be followed up until the cure is effected.
The Express charges to any part of the United States will be from two to five shillings, according to distance. The charge for six bottles no greater than for one.
Notice to Correspondents.—Correspondents will please give their P.O. Address plainly and distinctly, with the town, county, and State. Also, those ordering the Medicine will give the name of the nearest office to them.
