When I breed betta fish I use a 5 gallon aquarium with a already cycled sponge filter, heater, Indian almond leaves and other botanicals as well as a light on a timer. The water is heated to 80F, is dechlorinated, and aquarium salt is added. It is then allowed to "age" for a few days so a colony of microorganisms grows on the leaves as that decompose. I then add the male betta fish and give them an hour or two to become familiar with the tank before adding the female betta fish.
