I was genuinely excited about the Kindle Scribe without a front light. On paper, this should have been the purer, more paper-like version of Amazon’s big e-ink tablet — and possibly even a contender for my Top 10 E-Ink Tablets.

But after using it properly, I’m left with a strange feeling. The hardware is good. Reading is excellent. The pen shortcut button is genuinely useful. Handwriting search is there. Image rendering and writing are both better than some people might expect.
The problem is the productivity system.
In this video I look at whether this Kindle Scribe can challenge something like the Boox Tab Ultra C Pro in my Top 10, and why Amazon still has some obvious work to do if the Scribe is going to be more than a very good Kindle with a notebook attached.
This is not a bad device. It might even be the right device for a lot of Kindle-first users. But for notes, documents, cloud access, file handling and serious workflow use, I think Amazon has missed a very interesting opportunity.
