Peter Bjorn and John - Season Of Defiance (Official Lyric Video) Peter Bjorn and John 2020-11-13 | New single... and a new EP! We close out our 20th year together with the release of the 'Endless Play' EP on December 11th. The three-song EP also marks the end of three years of constant music-making, where each of us has been writing songs from our own soft spots (or sore points / tender buttons). Today we are releasing the first single 'Season of Defiance': peterbjornandjohn.ffm.to/seasonofdefiance'Season of Defiance' was written by Peter, who shared: As quite a few of my PBJ-songs started in a different time-signature as a fingerpicked acoustic thing that we sped & jingle-jangled up in the grand tradition of The Byrds popifying folk. Like a lot of material from the Endless Dream album, the final version is 90% based on a live take of the 3-piece and beautiful things happening between us in the spur of the moment. John added some percussive elements and I added a couple of different acoustic guitars for chiming textures as well as some choirboy-baroque-harmonies. The song is supposed to sound like a fresh spring new morning, still a bit chilly but with warmth coming on, and I think it does. Light but with weight if that makes sense. Lyrically it has the same ethos as the rest of my contributions to Endless Dream. It takes notice of all the darkness and shit around us (the "darker days" if you will) but are determined to look forward with a positive outlook and a glimmer of hope. Granted even harder to do now than when I wrote it but nevertheless. We sure do need to stay defiant these days and not be scared into silence and submission. And the lyric is there for you all to dig into! Peter has a few things to say about this now that all the "Endless Dream"-tracks have their own clips; "'Simple Song Of Sin' is sequenced perfectly. I think of the album in that it gives listeners a bit of a breather with its long dreamy-weave outro of echoey keys and layered twangy guitars. Even before that, it's kind of laid back and self-reflective in its soul-pop-psych-groove. Is that even a genre? The '3-instrument'-core here is based on bass and guitar playing a locked-in harmony-riff a'la 'Up against the wall,' on this record 'Music' and probably countless others? A PBJ-trademark nicked by way of The Mg's and maybe New Order? We've probably overused the word 'melancholic,' but if 'Endless Reruns' addressed late-summer ambiguity, this one is all about the full-on fall, which makes this text perfect right now. 'Autumn shape my senses sharp' indeed. We feel more pain when it's chilly outside, maybe? Or is it just bad clothes?If we feel more and carry a skin too few, all the painful information of the world can be hard to process into sleepless nights. But it follows the theme of the record of TRYING in defiance to be POSITIVE.Looking forward, onwards, upwards, shedding rusty old armors and make adjustments if needed, trying new things. 'Idiosyncrasy' was about a poet in love with himself, 'Drama King' about a lost actor, and 'A Week-end' is about a blunted, hard-hearted photographer. Instead of living, he is constantly collecting souvenirs from reality. Every line in this song is like dizzy, mental snapshots from a Sunday morning at the Sunset Marquis hotel in LA. (The video is something completely different though.) Apart from the vocals and the tambourine, this is a proper live-take, recorded during our first rehearsal of this song! Directed by Henry Moore Selder.How the song became a song:"Drama King" started with the rhythmical "riff-melody" on the verse and, by coincidence, the melody worked perfectly with an old lyric I found in a notebook.(The working title in the note-book was "The Actor" / "Tom Cruise post Nicole Kidman").The dorky 70s bass-riff suddenly popped up in my head, (don't ask me why), and after that, I called Peter and Bjorn.Lately, we have gotten into some sort of "crash-test-rehearsals".We meet up for an hour, try stuff out for ten minutes, and then someone has to leave for the tennis-court or to pick up kids from school. The fact is, it happens a lot during those ten minutes. The best music happens when you don't think.So:1. I hummed the bass-line in Bjorn's ear. 2. He tried to play it.3. I sat down behind the drums and tried out different, more or less stupid drum beats.4. Peter Bjorn and John - Bones (Official Video) Peter Bjorn and John 2019-04-11 | The song ”Bones” is a hardcore heartbreak-song with a twist. I wrote it back in 2014 and I wanted to write a lyric that takes a sudden turn in the end of the chorus. The idea for the song came when I heard a woman saying “I could break all the bones in my body” to a friend just as I walked past them. I don’t know if she was talking about the poor snow clearing of the streets of Stockholm or something else but it was the perfect start of a chorus.The first arrangement sounded like some kind of broken r and b. I can tell you, it sounded extremely cool. Really. But, it sort of ruined the lyric completely. So I started over and did this fragile arrangement based on a plucked acoustic guitar.This song was actually on the table during the making of the “Breakin Point” album and one of the artwork-ideas for that album was believe it or not, three broken bones. The track carries a spooky foreboding darkness, which is underscored by the hefty usage of the Atlantis-studios echo chamber and also its pump organ. There are also acoustic guitars. In fact, it's that rare thing, an all acoustic track performed all live, and it's all the better for it we think, dramatic and dynamic.
