Typography was a keystone of Virgil's work so we teamed up with two distinguished typographers, Charles Nix and Terrance Weinzierl from Monotype to join Chris Do in the critique session.
The Brief: Each participant was tasked to design one poster to celebrate the life of the late Virgil Abloh as part of a mock traveling exhibition along with some of the Virgil’s most iconic pieces. They selected one item from either the Louis Vuitton or Off-White collection to use as a creative springboard for their design.
Virgil Abloh (Sept. 30, 1980 – Nov. 28, 2021) was an American fashion designer and entrepreneur. He was the artistic director of Louis Vuitton's menswear collection beginning in 2018, and was given increased creative responsibilities across the LVMH brand in early 2021. Abloh began his own line of streetwear clothing, Pyrex Vision, in 2012 before succeeding the chief executive officer of the Milan-based label Off-White, a fashion house he founded in 2013.
A trained architect, Abloh, who also worked in Chicago street fashion, entered the world of international fashion with an internship at Fendi in 2009, alongside American rapper Kanye West. Abloh assumed the role of Creative Director at Donda, West's creative agency in 2010. In 2013, Abloh founded Off-White. The first African-American to be artistic director at a French luxury fashion house when he joined LVMH in 2018, Abloh was named by Time magazine as one of the 100 most influential people in the world that year. Abloh's design aesthetic which bridged streetwear and luxury clothing was described as transformative by The New York Times. According to The Wall Street Journal, he reached a level of global fame unusual for a designer, and as an inspirational figure, according to the BBC. - Wikipedia

1. Design in black and white - As we all know, Design can be frustrating, it’s easy to get overwhelmed. I find it helps to focus my attention on only whats important. That's why I design in black and white. It forces me to focus on only the most important aspects of the logo: Hierarchy, Contrast and Legibility.
2. Focus on legibility - Legibility is essential but can get in the way of some really fun ideas. Sometimes in pursuit of a clever idea, we get carried away to the point the logo becomes hard to read. Rookie mistake. The solution? Periodically check in and ask yourself (or someone else) does the logo read well?
3. Giving a good Critique is an art - There’s much more to it than simply throwing out random opinions. Whether critiquing your own work or someone else’s, it’s important to remember that a good critique follows a process. I think of it like peeling an onion: Start by simply describing what you’re seeing. Then, say 1 thing you like and 1 thing that feels kinda funny. Then, move into what isn’t working and why. Finally, suggest ways to fix it.
These are 3 small things you can start doing that will improve your logo design skills. Getting better is a slow process, but these 3 things are a step in the right direction. We will have more tips for you soon. Keep learning stuff, one day you will be great! Thanks for watching. The Futur.

How do you turn references into original ideas? In this video, Creative Director, Tom Crate, shares his 5-step process for creating high-end design concepts for clients like Nike, Jaguar, and Microsoft.
0:00 – Intro 0:55 – Where do Creative Ideas Come From? 1:48 – Five-Step Process for Generating ideas 3:08 – Let's put this Process into Practice – Generating Concepts 4:09 – How to use Pinterest to Explore Creative Ideas 5:40 – Breaking down an Image Reference and it's Meaning 6:55 – Curating and Organizing References Into Ideas 8:44 – An Example Project. From Moodboards to Final Project 10:18 – Get into the Habit of Collecting and Curating References
1) Understand the brief. Who’s it for? What should it do? How should it make people feel? Summarize the project into a few keywords that capture the essence.
2) Stop thinking. Clear your mind, make space for inspiration. This is an important step to distance yourself from initial knee-jerk solutions and allow yourself to fully and freely explore your creativity.
3) Explore. Allow those keywords and emotions to guide your journey of curating inspirational references. Explore far and wide, all art forms—if you’re designing a motion project don’t narrow your search to motion projects—take inspiration from dance, photography, typography, etc. As inspiration undoubtedly strikes, jot down quick notes capturing the ideas, but don’t get sidetracked creating those concepts, yet. Consider: headphones and a playlist to help you focus in and get in the zone.
4) Organize. After gathering references, organize them into common visual themes and patterns. Pinterest is a great tool for exploring, gathering, and organizing references into boards and even subcategories within a board.
5) Solidify. Write an evocative headline and some brief sentences that describe the themes of the various collections you’ve curated and how those themes may be executed creatively to communicate key concepts. Write with clarity and simplicity, keep it short. Google Slides works well as a simple tool to capture your ideas and allows you to display motion (animated gifs) alongside still images.

In this video, our Senior Designer, Minhye Cho, showcases her process on creating three spreads in Adobe InDesign.
First, Minhye set her margins for the spread for body copy and illustration. This will prevent any print cutoffs you could face after printing. Next, the colors were chosen to stimulate an "Overprint" look. This could be done by using the blend mode "Multiply". Then, illustration was made and body copy was inserted. Finally, she made her adjustments by balancing out the height of the elements.

More about Bentley Motors: (bentleymotors.com) Bentley Motors was founded by W.O. Bentley. The first car to bear his name pulled out of New Street Mews, London in 1919.
From modest beginnings, the company moved from strength to strength – in a relentless pursuit of both luxury and performance. Were it not for the brand’s five victories at Le Mans in the 1920s, plus a sixth in 2003, this combination could be seen as a contradiction in terms. In which case, it could be said that Bentley continues to create the most acclaimed contradictions on the road today.
Almost a century later, W.O.'s vision continues to guide our beliefs, actions and ambitions. Located in Crewe, England and owned by Volkswagen AG since 1998, Bentley Motors remains the definitive British luxury car company, crafting the world’s most desirable high performance grand tourers.

These are just a few not-so-secret tricks I've picked up working with InDesign for the past ten years. Hopefully, you'll be able to use these to save time the next time you're working on a multi-page document. Here's what we're going to cover in a nutshell:
00:00 - Overview 02:35 - Grids and Masters 06:25 - Type Styles 11:09 - Color Swatches
Side note: if you're one of those people who love using Illustrator, but haven't broken into InDesign yet (or don't see the point of it), this video is perfect for you.
But first: design systems. We're not going to go too deep here, but a design system outlines the rules, patterns, and elements that are used to make something look like it should. At its most simple level, a design system outlines basic patterns like color use, typography, and the way you use the space available.
When these patterns are established, it's really tedious to keep entering in the right settings in our design software. When I was using illustrator for most of my layouts, I'd always copy and paste blocks of type just to keep the formatting in place - who does that now?
Lucky for us, InDesign has fantastic features that help us automate the process of creating, using, and updating design systems.
Today we're going to be working on the Pebble Coffee Style Guide - Pebble is a fictional brand that I created (I love coffee). I've already established the bones of a design system here in this document that we're going to edit today.
I'm going to walk you through the process of adapting this style guide to a new brand or reformatting it to fit a pretty significant brand shift. This template file is over 100 pages long, and every page has actual copy on it (not filler text). So if we were going to update the design without a design system and reusable elements in place, it would take forever: it'd be like creating a new document.
Whenever I start something new, I always begin with the bones: the grid. Lets' go ahead and make the grids and guides visible in our template. I have that set to one of the buttons on my mouse, but you can use Command + ? to show them on your keyboard. Notice how our type area is nicely off-center to accommodate the page number? Well, let's say we want to get rid of that and have equal margins all the way around.
Now, pages can have their own grid systems in InDesign, but I prefer to work with masters for grids because you can apply masters to any page, and make big changes to multiple pages at once. Once you drag a master onto a page, all of its elements are applied on-page, and overrides the page content. You can tell if a page has a master assigned because it'll have a little letter flag on its thumbnail. That letter corresponds with the right master above.
So if I go up to our masters pane, you can see that I have a few dedicated to grids. I like nesting my masters as well, so you can see I've applied the A-Grids master to the ones with mouse type headers. It's a master... applied to a master... that gets applied to pages. Welcome to the matrix.
Obviously, we want to edit our grid, so let's double click into the XX master. You can see it's a blank page, with a solid color background, and it has our embedded grid.
As you can see, we have completely transformed the overall look and feel of this document by using the design system features built right into InDesign. 103 pages completely done in just a few hours. If you didn't love InDesign before, you'd love it after this project.
I hope this has been helpful for all you people who are staring down the barrel of a long document project.
