We are here to answer this question, not through an in-depth analysis video, not through a lengthy forum post, but through a fully playable video game experience. After 10 months of research and development we believe that, yes, Sonic can not only exist in 3D, but he can THRIVE in it. GHP's massive environment, winding paths, dynamic physics and hidden collectibles provide players with the freedom to choose where they want to go and how they wish to get there. The only limitations are the laws of physics and the player's own skill.

0:00 - Sonic's interactions with downward inclines 1:51 - Sonic's interactions with steep, upward inclines such as quarter-pipes and ramps 4:00 - Sonic's interactions with gradual slopes. I did my best to give each game in this comparison a fair chance, attempting to find level geometry that was common between each title. For example: In each title I approached a quarter-pipe first at a walking speed, then at a running speed, then with a Spin Dash (or equivalent speed-increasing maneuver) and compared the results.
This video was created in the hopes that it will facilitate a better understanding of the inherent shortcomings of the current character controller and physics system present in the recent Sonic title: Sonic Frontiers. Coming to SAGE 2020 is Virtua Sonic! This is a virtual reality experience where you become the iconic hedgehog, traversing original Zones, defeating enemies, collecting rings and, of course, using the terrain to your advantage to achieve high speeds.
This project's goal is to push the boundaries of what sorts of experiences are capable in virtual reality, showcasing the potential of the medium as it pertains to high-speed action games.
In my research, I have discovered that it is not necessarily motion itself that gives players motion sickness, but a lack of expectation of how that motion is going to behave. For example: a roller coaster VR experience is completely out of the player's control. They have no say in what they do and when things happen to them. Similarly, if a VR motion system moves a player in a way that they don't expect, that can also disorient them. As such, so long as the player feels in control of themselves at all times, motion sickness should cease to be a hindrance to the player.
This experience will be compatible with all SteamVR-compatible headsets: ~HTC Vive ~Vive Cosmos ~Valve Index ~Oculus Rift ~Oculus Rift S ~Oculus Quest (Through Oculus Link only) ~Windows Mixed Reality ~Pico Neo 2 (Through Streaming Assistant only)
PAS (Probably Asked Questions): -Will you port this to non-VR? No. This was built from the ground, up with Virtual Reality in mind. Porting back down to a traditional perspective would result in an unsatisfactory experience.
-Will you port this to standalone Oculus Quest through SideQuest? No. This was built using the SteamVR framework in order to reach the widest audience possible. Porting to Quest would require a complete overhaul.
-What's that black thing at the bottom right? That's your (Sonic's) nose! (You can turn it off in the options. Don't worry.)
-Will you port Green Hill Paradise to VR? No, for the same reasons stated above.
-Will this be made open-source like The Bumper Engine? Unfortunately, no. The Dragon Ball Z-inspired gameplay came to be as a result of my desire to create an experience that allows the player to engage in a "Power fantasy" scenario where they are given fantastic destructive abilities, but at the same time pitting the player against an opponent with powers that exceed the player's, creating a dynamic in which the player feels powerful, yet still must fear the power of their adversary.
This unique scenario would, ideally, create a unique emotional state in the player: A state where they feel a rush of child-like wonder and fun, while at the same time feeling the urge to rise up against this challenge and overcome it using their newfound ability.
