LMS 44932 Pounds Over Blea Moor - The Winter Cumbrian Mountain Express Marsh Steam Videos™ 2023-01-21 | Magical winter conditions were the backdrop for the opening mainline steam tour of 2023 featuring the recently returned Black Five 44932. The Black Five was hauling the Winter Cumbrian Mountain Express from Manchester to Carlisle via the S&C. 44932 is seen working off Ribblehead Viaduct as it forges its way to the Summit of the Long Drag in Blea Moor tunnel. Steam Scenes like this are pretty rare and it was well worth the 300 mile round trip for such a short video.I hope you enjoy the video.
GWR 2857 On Its Final Call Of Duty ! The Severn Valley Railway (2023) Marsh Steam Videos™ 2023-01-02 | Great Western heavy goods locomotive '2857' is seen on its final two runs before being with withdrawn from service where it will take a much earned rest. There is currently no plans for an immediate overhaul and I'd hazard a guess it will take up its retirement in the engine house at Highley where It will put to bed alongside an array of former greats which have once worked across the Severn Valley in the decades gone by. GWR 7029 - The Rolling Thunder On The Merchant Venturer + A4 Bonus ! Marsh Steam Videos™ 2022-12-07 | 7029 Clun Castle puts on a vocal display on the Merchant Venturer from Solihull to Bath & Bristol on a midweek Christmas Excursion. The outbound scenes start at Harbury where the late running Castle is seen bursting out of the short tunnel portal with a bit of help from the rear to regain time. just a few miles further up the line we see Clun roaring along at speed and sounding wonderful.Having watered at Oxford we were able to catch the tour again, this time at Culham where the sound of Rolling Thunder was well showcased with the Castle putting down the power through the station and then heading away from the station towards Didcot. An impressive show as always from the flagship locomotive from Tyseley.The return leg would see us head to Dorridge for a swift arrival and departure. This was followed on from a shot just up the line at Bentley Heath crossing. Unfortunately a nearby house alarm was sounding off through the proceedings and somewhat compromised the audio, so I've had to shorten down that scene. Regardless, it was still a superb sight and sound as 7029 roared away from Dorridge on the dying embers of the trip.To finish the video the off there is a bonus shot of 4498 Sir Nigel Gresley returning Home to Crewe after completing its stint down south. The A4 can be seen accelerating though Lichfied Trent Valley after being held for a stopping Pendolino at Platform one. 70000 Britannia Avoids The Rail Strikes - The Great Western Xmas Envoy Marsh Steam Videos™ 2022-11-26 | 70000 Britannia heads a Saphos steam hauled excursion to Bath & Bristol in the middle of another drivers rail strike which would see the majority of public passenger trains cancelled. As the steam tour is a private train from a private operator, this would not effect the steam special. The effect of strike would mean 'Greens all the way' for the crew of the Britannia and also near deserted railway stations and along a very quiet railway network.The outbound leg is seen from four locations. We start off in the suburbs of our hometown Birmingham to see Britannia opening up just in the nick of time after having just joined the Birmingham to Coventry mainline (WCML)at Stechford which is about a mile before us. The next shot would see us head to Banbury in Oxfordshire, where a deserted station would greet us. With the ticket barriers down and not a member of staff in sight, it all felt a bit like the original Covid Lockdown. While it felt very eerie at such a big station, it was very enjoyable to have the platforms to ourselves, except for the late arrivals of a few locals which made it just five people. Eventually the Brit came into sight and sweeped through the left handed curve through the station and it was going nicely despite the shut off.Next up was Kennington just south of Oxford, where the Brit charges towards Didcot and eventually onto the Great Western Mainline. The final scenes take place on the edge of Bath at Twerton and Newton St Loe. The Saphos steam special is seen exiting Twerton tunnel and then gracefully heading off towards Bristol. LMS 45596 & 6233 - A Jubilee & The Nocturnal Duchess ! The Cheshireman Marsh Steam Videos™ 2022-11-20 | A glorious late autumn morning played the backdrop for the outbound run of the Xmas Cheshirman from Bristol to Chester. LMS Jubilee class 45596 Bahamas would be given the honour of hauling the outbound leg and is seen making a memorable passage through Hencote on the outskirts of Shrewsbury.For the return leg 6233 Duchess Of Sutherland would head the train south and the whole run would be in the darkness so we were limited to station shots only. It seemed the news of the impending passage of a steam train through multiple sleepy Shropshire railway stations had spread and the locals were out in force from the edge of north wales right down to into Shropshire, there were crowds bordering along the lines of Scotsman fever ! We even had to scrap one of our shots at Gobowen due to unruly attendees ! All night shot locations are stated in the video. The night scenes are not edited very well due to a lot of cutting out due to platform noise so they'll be showcased one after the other with very little build up but you will still get the usual atmospheric nocturnal shots which everyone seems to like.Its been nine weeks since we've last filmed any mainline steam. This is due to multiple tours being cancelled due to low bookings and continuous strike action by railway employees. As We're now into the build up towards Christmas there should be a good helping of steam action to get our teeth into in the coming weeks. I hope you enjoy the video.

Pure Steam On The North Yorkshire Moors Railway ! Annual Steam Gala (2022) Marsh Steam Videos™ 2022-09-27 | The NYMR once again steps up to the plate to provide unrivaled hardworking steam action across four days at their annual Autumn steam gala with the star guest and former resident 'Sir Nigel Gresley' finally returning to the Moors after a seven year absence. The return of A4 was hyped up from the get go and rightly so, as the engine is not just popular with enthusiasts its also loved by the locals who've all had many trips behind arguably one of the most famous A4 locomotives, make no mistake its following is huge. The build up to the gala was less than ideal for SNGLT (owners) as the locomotive has been in the workshop all summer having some extensive work done to the engine which needed doing. Given the extra work involved the loco missed its slot in the paint shop so in turn the locomotive would remain in its temporary wartime black protective coat which made its return to the NYMR more exciting and fascinating.While the star was undoubtedly 4498, there was as usual a couple more visiting engines with there own great following. The second star to visit was courtesy of the Great Central Railway and that was STD 5 '73156' making its first visit to the Moorsline and while the loco is used to the gentle gradients of the GCR, the STD 5 would have its workload increased tenfold as it tackles the rugged terrain of North Yorkshire Moors. The third visiting engine would have no problem working on steep gradients though it would be considerably less loaded than its fellow visitors. the engine in question would be Taff Vale Railway No85 courtesy of the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway. The former Welsh Valleys loco would be needed for banking and use on the goods trains. On the final day it was paired up with Lambton Tank No29 'Peggy' for double headed run to Pickering, this would turn out to be one of the highlights of the gala.As usual the homefleet were all in action except Black Five 5428 'Eric Treacy' which was ruled out. In total nine locomotives feature in the video. 9F 92134 was the pick of the bunch as I was able to tick off one of my bucket list shots in fine style. the 9F was captured working northbound through Newtondale at Huggits Scar on a glorious Autumn morning. The reason it was a bucket list shot was the fact the 9F was facing North which is rare for any steam locomotive on the NYMR as all locos usually face south. The railway has some stunning vistas especially going northbound out of Levisham but as usual these would be tender first. With a superb morning forecast and a smokebox facing loco, this was 'Now Or Never' On a sidenote it took us nearly two hours on foot to complete a round trip to this location with the journey on foot being mostly off piste, I'm sure you'll agree it was well worth the long hike. Lambton Tank 29, the J27 and the Q6 alongside 926 Repton & fellow southerner 825 were all in fine form throughout the gala with plenty of double headed pairings and goods trains to get your teeth into. We also got to enjoy a ride behind the locos as we traveled the trains on the final day to top off one of our best visit's to the North York Moors in recent years. I hope you enjoy our coverage.
4498 Sir Nigel Gresley - A Triumphant Return To The NYMR ! Marsh Steam Videos™ 2022-09-22 | A little teaser for the North Yorkshire Moors Railway Annual Steam Gala sees 4498 makes its triumphant return to NYMR metals with its first run of the gala after nearly seven years away from the railway. Sir Nigel is seen rounding the curve at Darnholme and easing into Goathland station with No. 85 Taff Vale Railway Class 02 providing light banking assistance due to the A4 only just coming off shed and not at full operating temperature.I hope you enjoy the video and keep a lookout for the full video of the annual gala on Monday.
Severn Valley Railway - Autumn Steam Gala (2022) Marsh Steam Videos™ 2022-09-18 | Arguably the highlight on the Autumn steam calendar is the Severn Valley Railway Steam Gala with three standard gauge visiting engines and the full triumphant return of 4930 Hagley Hall to Severn Valley metals. The event was held over four days and the video featured here was taken across the first two days. The weather conditions were fine throughout though a pesky northerly wind gave ample reminders we were now in Autumn despite the warmth from the sunshine making it rather pleasant on some occasions.As stated above 4930 Hagley Hall was billed as the star engine on show, though a mid gala departure for the engine caused major disappointment for the final two days of the gala due to the locomotive setting off a string of lineside fires which put nearby neighbours property in jeopardy. This was followed up with a host of visits from the local fire brigade which was never a good look. Its firmly believed by many that the railway took the right decision, though those passengers who were due to travel on the Saturday and Sunday would be left disappointed. Thankfully the Great Western Hall class is a home based loco and there will plenty more opportunities to travel behind the engine.The second visiting engine was mainline LMS Black Five 45231 Sherwood Forester which was brought in from Crewe courtesy of Locomotive Services Limited. The engine performed faultlessly throughout and we captured some of our best shots with the locomotive. The third engine to the visit the railway was West Somerset Railway's GWR inspired mogul 9351 which certainly looked at home on the former Great Western branch line despite its long term history. The final visiting loco would turn out to be a fan favourite throughout the gala and that was the former Side tank Hunslet 0-6-0ST Jessie (Works No. 1873) courtesy of the Pontypool & Blaenavon Railway in South Wales. With its distinctive black livery and wasp stripes this little loco put on some fine displays on the local services between Bridgnorth & Hampton Loade which in turn provided much enjoyment by many.As usual with most steam galas the home fleet were all in action though 75069 just avoided our grasp. The homefleet featured in the video were No 70 aka 34027 Taw Valley, GWR 2857 & GWR 1501 which were both participating in their final gala appearances before overhaul. Pannier tank 7714 makes a brief appearance and the Flying Pig aka 43106 was assigned on a short goods train. Having traveled the trains on the Saturday and spent time at the lineside we have enjoyed all aspects of what the gala had to offer and it was definitely right up there with some of best galas we've attended, though this was no surprise as the SVR and Autumn galas go hand in hand !I hope you enjoy our take on the proceedings of the event.
LMS 45231 & 70000 Britannia Power Up The Lickey Bank - The Bristol Forty ! Marsh Steam Videos™ 2022-09-13 | The return leg of the Bristol Forty excursion would see Black Five 45231 Sherwood Forester & 70000 Britannia tackle the famous Lickey Bank. Four angles capture the ascent of the steepest railway gradient in the UK. The spectacle was somewhat underwhelming due to the vigorous blowing off from Britannia which blotted out the audio of both locos. Thankfully the going away shots pick up the sound a lot better near the summit, though the Black Five is really the only audible loco.It was still great to see steam up this famous stretch of line. 7029 Clun Castle Thunders Up To Edge Hill On The Mersey Explorer + LMS Bonus ! Marsh Steam Videos™ 2022-09-11 | Great Western Castle Class 7029 'Clun Castle' makes for an impressive sight as it thunders up the famous railway cutting from Liverpool Lime Street to Edge Hill on the return leg of the Mersey Explorer to Birmingham. This location had been on the bucket list for many year's and it was well worth the wait to hear the sound of steam echoing of the cutting walls.After the dramatic climb to Edge Hill we attempted to chase the train back home and given that it was booked non stop to Wolverhampton this would present a challenge. Thankfully we had brisk exit out of Liverpool and the motorways were quiet and this enabled us to get to get to Penkridge station just a mere 10 minutes before the Castle came racing through towards Wolverhampton. What a great way to finish off !Prior to the earlier exploits of 7029 at the start of the video our actual first sighting of steam was LMS 46115 Scots Guardsman, which was hauling the Coast to Express from Liverpool to Scarborough. A new location for us would see us head to the city Sheffield where we see the Royal Scot class steaming along nicely on approach to Meadowhall, while it was a mundane passage it made for the unusual capture of the locomotive rocking and rolling over the Junction with the tender swaying over the points. While this does happen regularly, its not often captured on camera in such detail.I hope you enjoy the sight sound of sound of a hard working Castle class up to Edge Hill.
35018 British India Line With A Spectacular Run Over Grayrigg ! Marsh Steam Videos™ 2022-08-28 | Merchant Navy Class '35018 British India Line' puts on a superb climb over Grayrigg and Shap on the Cumbrian Mountain Express. The big southern class 8 ran between Carnforth and Carlisle well inside of even time at 61 mins and considering you have the long pull over Grayrigg and then the fearsome Shap this arguably the best run of the year over the northern hills of the West Coast Mainline. In this video we capture the Merchant Navy near the top of Grayrigg at Docker and then just after the Summit at Beckfoot. On board reports have the train topping Grayrigg at 57mph and Shap was taken at 47mph which indicates a breathtaking run for all concerned.The return leg over the S&C was the polar opposite, the Bullied roar which was showcased on the outward run was replaced with the usual soft Bullied chatter that we're all used too, with a more 'run of the mill' ascent over the S&C on the return leg. We capture the action at Waitby Common near Kirkby Stephen and at Angerholme near Ais Gill. The final scene captures 35018 working well up Wilpshire Bank on latter stages of the steam section.Its been nearly two months since we've filmed a mainline steam tour due to the heightened fire risk across the country though in the North West the risk has diminished unlike southern parts of the country which are still under restrictions. We can now look forward to a busy month in September, though fingers are still firmly crossed due to the lack of rain we're still not getting. I hope you enjoy the video.

Marsh Steam Videos™ 2022-08-26 | It's been well over three Decades since we've last seen Great Western Hall class 'Hagley Hall' turn a wheel in anger and in today's video we see her on it's second day of loaded tests, where the footplate crew had seemed to bypass the gentle running in period with some enthusiastic passages for our cameras. The freshly out shopped Hall class minus a few missing parts is now well into her running in period as the loco beds itself in for it's star role at Severn Valley's Autumn Steam Gala in September and by going on today's showing she looks well up to the task and will no doubt be the firm favourite over the gala weekend.I hope you enjoy the video.
An Early Morning In The Countryside, Idyllic Steam Scenes On The SVR ! Marsh Steam Videos™ 2022-08-07 | With the dry spell continuing in Central & Southern England, steam action is at a premium and with diesel operation/assistance now being implemented across some parts of the mainline we are currently unable to capture anything worth filming. Even some preserved railways are now running diesel only in certain parts of the county or at worst Show Pony Steam with a restricted output of power to reduce fires. The only place that is seeing pure steam operations is in the North West of England and its hardly local for us. With intense work commitments and more dry weather in the forecast I cannot see where our next dose of proper steam is coming from. So apologies for the lack of new steam videos.With this in mind and to keep the our channel ticking over I've dug deep into the Archives to hunt down some unpublished scenes and low behold I came across these two little gems from the 2021 Autumn Steam Gala on the Severn Valley Railway. No idea why these didn't make the cut but I'm just glad to of stumbled across them. I will have another look in the archive to see if there's anything else worth publishing for your enjoyment. Clan Line & Britannia ! The Atlantic Coast Express & The English Riviera Express Marsh Steam Videos™ 2022-07-03 | 35028 Clan Line & 70000 Britannia head northbound over Whiteball within 70 minutes of each other as they tackle the climb to Whiteball Summit. If you're looking to make a comparison of which loco performed better then its as clear as day. Clan Line was due first on the opening stages of its return leg to London Waterloo and as expected the Merchant Navy Was on fine form as it glided through Tiverton Parkway with its whistle wailing. Five cameras were in operation for this passage, a Marsh Steam Videos first ! The Latter scene with Britannia was running 20 minutes early due to slack timings and this resulted in the crew easing right back on the final mile to Whiteball summit, this can been witnessed by the vigorous lifting of the safety valves. The only saving grace was that she looked immaculate in the summer sun and for the final scene the Brit was opened up though the sun was in a less than ideal spot unlike the previous scene.Still, it was worth the 320 mile round trip to see these mainline giants grace the rails within a short space of time. 45596 Bahamas - The Surmount Of Sapperton - The Cotswold Venturer + Bonus ! Marsh Steam Videos™ 2022-06-19 | The only double chimney Jubilee class in the form of 45596 Bahamas was tasked with the arduous climb of Sapperton Bank on the Cotswold Venturer. The highlight is always the fierce curved climb through the Golden Valley which now resembles a jungle and shots are limited at best. Sapperton would be surmounted both ways by Bahamas with the the Jubilee making light work of the East side of Sapperton on the outbound leg where Bahamas is seen roaring along just outside of Kemble and then at Coates which is at the bottom of the bank. We always try to get ahead of the train after the Gloucester water stop and we rarely make it due to the nature of the first two locations and the country roads and the Saturday traffic. This time we just made it in the nick of the time, though a handheld shot on a busy road bridge would have to do. For the return leg we would head to the proper side of Sapperton where three angles would capture the sure footed climb of a Jubilee in full voice as the train snaked its way into the tunnel in fine style. The first two scenes capture Bahamas at Frampton Mansell and then from high above the tunnel looking down over the Golden Valley as the sound of steam began to raise before emerging into the open in full glory. Lovely stuff ! As I briefly mentioned above Sapperton Bank is one of the most difficult places to film due to nature doing its thing and the recent installation of crossing sirens and signage which has been erected along the two main crossings. Only three angles remain and its expected the shot high up above the tunnel will be fenced off in due course, so it was paramount that we was in attendance for this one. Oh, there's also a nice bonus shot at the end featuring 6233 Duchess Of Sutherland on the Geordie Duchess from Newcastle to Birmingham. At 23.20pm on Saturday night 6233 charges away from Tamworth and erupts through Wilnecote station on the final stages of its mammoth return leg. Glad I made the effort in the end as I was in two minds about going after our long day at Sapperton !I hope you enjoy the video.

All actual speeds are captioned in the video and these are provided by professional timers who have kindly provided their reports from on board or other fellow enthusiasts who were also travelling and kindly provided the speed at our video locations. When the actual speeds are not known or haven't been provided I have calculated the speed within a 5mph range to allow for any minor miscalculation, I am very confident that the speeds indicated do not exceed or fall any lower than the stated range. A4 4498 Sir Nigel Gresley - A Black Mainline Streak Over The Northern Hills ! Marsh Steam Videos™ 2022-05-22 | A4 4498/60007 Sir Nigel Gresley took to the mainline stage for its Inaugural mainline return. The significance of this trip would be the fact that this is the only one of a few select trips we'll see an A4 on the mainline hauling a train in Wartime Black, as the loco is due to painted back to its original B.R blue livery this Autumn/Winter. This was also a private excursion for the members of SNGLT.Our day would start off at Winsford where the A4 was booked on the fast line out of Crewe, this had all the hallmarks for a spirited run and boy did we get it, three angles cover this, there was also a bonus 20 minutes before. After Winsford we headed north to the S&C, being as this was our only chance to see a black mainline A4, I wanted to see it pass some vintage railway infrastructure, so Settle Junction would be your best best with the backdrop of a glorious working signal box and semaphore signals. Sir Nigel eventually turned up, running late due to being held for a poxy unit to be sent out in front, so this slightly effected its approach speed to the long drag, though this didn't detract from the scene as Gresley made a superb sight passing the Box and signals. Just a few miles up the bank we see 4498 negotiating the curve to Langcliffe with the loco running well up the Long Drag to Blea Moor tunnel.The return leg from Carlisle would see a prompt departure and coinciding with this would be the arrival of better weather, though an unfortunate turn of events at Great Strickland would see a northbound Avanti Pendolino blocking most of our shot right at the crucial time, thankfully we had a static camera placed just around the corner, though luckily or unluckily the camera battery died just as the last few coaches passed the camera. A few miles further South I took position just before Shap Village for a long side on profile shot which would showcase the sleek curves of an A4. With a dramatic lifting of the conditions 4498 was gleaming nicely, though we were let down with the locomotive performance as the driver had eased her back for some reason which was surprising as its a long hard pull over Shap south. With a gusty South Westerly wind taking the sound away this slightly took the edge of the scene, though it ended with a nicely timed livestock convoy moving through the field as the last of the train passed out of shot. Our final glance of the A4 would be at Balshaw Lane Junction not Euxton as stated In the video. A brief view it may on been thought a great one as Gresley's racehorse does its thing on the Fast Line out of Preston making for another fine sight and topping off a great day on the mainline.I hope you enjoy the video.
No 70 Elizabeth II - AKA 34027 In Purple/Pink Jubilee Livery - Severn Valley Railway Marsh Steam Videos™ 2022-05-14 | No 70 Elizabeth II is seen on its first hauled passenger service on the Severn Valley Railway in its temporary Purple/Pink tribute livery for the Queens Platinum Jubilee celebrations at the start of of June. While the colour is very much debatable, what's not debatable is the recent outside publicity for the railway which this temporary livery has sparked. As an enthusiast we think its unsightly, but we're happy to see it and we fully back the railways decision to celebrate the Queens Platinum Jubilee with this course of action which we hope and expect to bring in new visitors to the railway. That Deltic Drone ! The Greatest Sounding Diesel ? The Napier Necessities ! Marsh Steam Videos™ 2022-05-13 | A mini compilation of my favourite captured Deltic scenes which feature mostly D9009 Alycidon along side 55022 Royal Scots Grey and a single but brief view of D9016 Gordon Highlander on the rarest of trains. That famous Napier soundtrack provides an audible feast for those who love the sight and sound of a Class 55 Deltic. Many of those who were around to see the switchover from steam to Deltic will testify to the brilliance of these locos and Its a crying shame that these locomotives aren't as prevalent on the mainline as steam as the following for these class 55's are unrivaled. You'll have to excuse the quality of the video as these scenes were all captured before we acquired our 4K cameras so the images are not as sharp as our recent videos. 7822 & 75069 - 12 Coach Mega Train ! West Somerset Railway Spring Gala ! Marsh Steam Videos™ 2022-05-09 | The long awaited return of a major held event at the West Somerset Railway was marked with their Spring Steam Gala which was held over four days from the 5th of May to the 8th May. The main highlight for us was the Saturday evening mega train with 12 coaches and two locos, which were Great Western Manor Class 7822 Foxcote Manor & BR Standard 75069. The pair are seen at the end of the video romping towards the summit at Crowcombe Heathfield with the Manor making the majority of the noise as expected. In regards to the gala it was held late in terms of Springtime and this was proven with the much welcomed summer like weather. With the backdrops taken care of the gala was well received though heavy delays were present across all days due to numerous issues which I wont bore you with. Its safe to say the railway were a little ring rusty in running such events over their glorious 20 mile railway. This was the first major event since the pandemic and since the railway almost went out of business.The main guest for the gala was the Caledonian Railway Class 439 0-4-4T 419, or the Scottish Thomas The Tank as some enthusiasts call it. Unfortunately the loco had quite a few steaming issues throughout the gala and due to the late running on the Sunday we were not able to capture it, though I'm not a massive fan of the blue livery. Please accept our apology for not featuring the main guest. Severn Valley Railway's 2857 was a late replacement for 9466 which was withdrawn from the event for essential work. Also featuring from the SVR was BR Standard 75069.As stated above all action except the final sequences were filmed on Sunday as we spent the Saturday travelling and soaking up the glorious weather, countryside and fine locomotives which were on show. With the timetable in disarray on Sunday many of the planned shots were not attainable and we had to basically make up alternative plans on the move as there was much chopping and changing by the operations department, so not all services ran as planned, some goods trains were cancelled, locos were not turning and some were turned when they were not planned to. Thankfully the railway has an excellent webcam service so at least we knew the exact time of some of the altered departures. A big thanks to the West Somerset Railway for their extensive effort throughout the weekend and especially on our two day visit. The highlight for us was the 12 coach mega train featuring 7822 & 75069 in last rays of sunshine. This is featured at the end of our short video. BR 70000 - Steaming Through The Midlands - The Severn Valley Enterprise Marsh Steam Videos™ 2022-04-30 | 70000 Britannia takes her first paying passenger steam tour after recently returning from a quick fire overhaul and loaded test runs. For the time being 70000 is the only operational Britannia class so the return of the Brit is much welcomed. The loco is also fresh out of the paint shop and is looking rather shiny, almost in museum conditon. The tour was a Saphos Trains special running from Llandudno to Bridgnorth via Crewe where Britannia would join the train. The outbound run is captured at Penkridge, Four Ashes and Stourbridge Junction. The return is seen much better weather at Blakedown, where the driver of loco lets off a great chime for the approaching crossing at Churchill where we just happen to be shooting from. Both angles capture this scene. We're delighted to have Britannia back in full service and we can now look forward to seeing what the rest of the year has in store for a fan favourite. Double Headed Jubilees ! LMS 45596 & 45690 On The Great Britain XIV Marsh Steam Videos™ 2022-04-28 | LMS double headed Jubilees would provide arguably the highlight of the mammoth nine day Great Britain tour. Day six would begin from Grange Over Sands and finish at Cardiff. The highlight of the day would be the run over the Welsh Marches with the climb to Church Stretton. We capture the Jubilees powering their way through All Stretton and three angles capture the action. After watering at Craven Arms we capture the pair powering away past Stokesay Castle with a DMU briefly gatecrashing proceedings. Again, three angles capture the action. We did plan to chase the Jubilees all day from the North West but an accident on the M6 motorway meant we couldn't proceed north, thankfully 70000 Britannia was nearby hauling its first mainline steam tour since returning from overhaul and was also fresh out of the paint shop. This video will be published on the weekend, so keep an eye out for that.I hope you the sights and sounds of double headed Jubilees.
The Severn Valley Railway - Spring Steam Gala (2022) Marsh Steam Videos™ 2022-04-24 | Sir Nigel Gresley was the star attraction at the Severn Valley Railway Spring Steam gala and we would be treated to a Black A4 on the Teaks (coaches) This was undoubtedly the highlight of the event and this was done justice given the amount of people that frequented the trains and the masses that soared to the lineside. While the A4 was the Star there was three other guests. There was a Southern S15 in the form of 506, which was courtesy of the Mid Hants Railway. This was backed up by last year's star engine 2999 Lady Of Legend. The new build Saint class returned and would once again put on a good show for all. The fourth guest was Saddle Tank 71516 Welsh Guardsman which was paired with the small home fleet locos for some fantastic double headed thrash. As mentioned above the homefleet are featured though not all. Filming took place on the Thursday and half a day on Friday. We gave up filming early as we had a two day rover ticket and wanted to sample some of that sorely missed gala action that has been put hold due to the pandemic. The downside to travelling is I can't be at the lineside, so I decided to capture some evening scenes on my Samsung S21 camera phone for my personal enjoyment. These were captured at Bewdley and Arley after we finished travelling, usually I wouldn't dare showcase these as they rarely come out well but after playing them back on the big screen, I was pleasantly surprised at the quality and the lack of shake in the video. While the phone camera audio is generally pretty awful, the magic of the modern day phone camera is rather good and I have included the scenes as an additional optional bonus. LMS 6201 Princess Elizabeth - The Big Red Machine ! Marsh Steam Videos™ 2022-04-16 | A video compilation of 6201 Princess Elizabeth hard at work on the mainline spanning an eight year period. The future for this famous locomotive is less than rosy with Lizzie currently out of action due to a defect around the throat plate area of the firebox. The society have requested a boiler inspection to determine the problem, and they have requested that all cladding be removed from the boiler and firebox and that the superheater header should be removed to enable proper examination of the front tube plate too. To undertake this inspection work and subsequent repairs, the 6201 society are in need of £165,000 to complete the all inspections and work that is deemed necessary. Currently as it stands the 6201 society are a long way off where they need to be and the best outcome would be that a rich benefactor can come in and takeover the reigns but its unlikely the society would want to relinquish their ownership of locomotive. Until the above issues are dealt with, we'll have to make do with videos such as these. I hope you enjoy a look back at some our shots of a National Treasure !
34046 & 35018 - Two Bulleids On Shap Back To Back - Nine Minutes Apart ! Marsh Steam Videos™ 2022-04-10 | In a preservation first we see two Southern Bulleids tackling Shap Bank just nine minutes apart on separate steam excursions. The West Country Class 34046 Braunton was up first, as it hauled the Lakelander from Preston to Carlisle and back down the Cumbrian coast to Carnforth. The class 7 Bulleid can been seen clagging its way through Salterwath and up to Shap Wells. Just nine minutes later the Merchant Navy class 35018 British India Line saunters her way up the bank in less dramatic style with a mere 12 coaches on the hook. I think the plaudits go to Braunton for this one despite the lower speed. We finally catch up with British India Line on the return trip through Waitby and Kirkby Stephen where the big class 8 southerner was wound right back as it stormed up the Long Drag. We'd of liked to captured 34046 again but it was on the other side of Cumbria and as luck would of have it there was our local Great Western Castle class 7029 returning from York and heading in our direction. We first capture Clun Castle restarting from a signal check at Belper after catching an all stopping service train, I was hoping for something faster but this will more than do ! About a mile further south we see the Castle negotiating the sweeping curve on approach to Duffield just north of Derby. Our final shot of the Castle was at Willington just south of Derby. This topped off a great day with some fantastic action on display and well worth the 395 mile round trip.I hope you enjoy the video.
LMS 46100 - Putting The Power Down Through Water Orton ! The White Rose Marsh Steam Videos™ 2022-04-07 | Royal Scot is seen putting down the power through Water Orton station after just joining the busy Birmingham to Derby mainline from the Sutton Park line. Water Orton is our mainline local station and its one the busiest mainline stations in the country, with the line splitting in two, one heading north in the direction of Derby and the other to Coleshill and Nuneaton, there is also the slow avoiding line through Whitacre Heath which then rejoins the mainline at Kingsbury, also there is the busy freight terminal at Hams Hall. With all this, this has made Water Orton a popular spot for railway enthusiasts of all traction, as it was in the glory days too. Swiftly after Royal Scot is seen a few miles further up the line at Lea Marston as the loco powers over the River Tame. The return leg is captured at Willington and finally Wilnecote where an unwanted sight of a powering diesel helps to get the train up to speed after stopping at Tamworth. This was to avoid holding up a Edinburgh to Bristol HST which was also being held up outside Tamworth by the steam special. Not an ideal ending but it does happen time from time, though pretty rare for us. Still it was a fine sight blasting under the road bridge through the station.We would've liked to covered this trip in more detail but as usual work commitments come first. Severn Valley Railway Test Run Marsh Steam Videos™ 2022-03-28 | With light engine tests completed and all current minor issues sorted, Sir Nigel Gresley is seen on its first loaded test run on the Severn Valley Railway from Bridgnorth to Kidderminster and return. The ex Caledonian sleeper coaches are being used to test the Air Braking system on the A4 and obviously to see how the A4 performs under load. Scenes are taken at Bewdley, Hampton Loade and Eardington Bank. I hope you enjoy the video.
GWR 7029 & LMS 6233 - A Glistening Castle & A Brief Duchess ! Marsh Steam Videos™ 2022-03-27 | After its exploits across the Welsh Marches at the start of March, 7029 Clun Castle was once again back out on the mainline and this time a trip to Chester was on the cards, though this was no direct route as it took a roundabout trip over the East Midlands and then tracked back to head onto the WCML (west cost mainline) The fantastic weather we've had for the last 10 days continued, though with warm weather, steam effects would be at a premium.Also heading north up the WCML, this time to Manchester, was LMS 6233 Duchess Of Sutherland, running London Euston to Manchester Piccadilly. We managed to capture a shot of the Duchess approaching a red light on the WCML avoiding line which takes slow traffic away from the former bottleneck at Norton Bridge. The new build railway splits off in two sections, with 6233 taking the right fork over the fast lines and joining the Stoke on Trent branch of the West Coast Mainline. This route is extremely rare for steam excursions. The Duchess is seen cautiously approaching a red signal before eventually getting a clear road for Stoke. While we would of preferred a fast paced scene, the slow passage allows you a good look at a gleaming duchess.Having seen the Duchess take the right fork of the avoiding line, it was now time for 7029 to head up the branch, just a few hours later. Though this time it would branch of to the left at Searchlight lane and rejoin the full WCML as can be seen in the video. For the return we headed over to Chester and we decided on Hargrave which is about 5 miles out of Chester, the late evening sun played the perfect backdrop as 7029 speeds through the Cheshire countryside while glistening to full effect, lovely stuff. There was a planned night shot but it was a long wait and we decided to end the day a bit earlier, we was more than happy with the end results.I hope you enjoy the video.

Marsh Steam Videos™ 2022-03-23 | The long awaited return of LNER A4 Class 4498/60007 Sir Nigel Gresley is finally here as Gresley takes her first tentative movements on the Severn Valley Railway after a lengthy overhaul. The locomotive is due to her run in her black wartime guise throughout testing and on the Severn Valley Railway's Spring Steam Gala at the end of April. The A4 is seen arriving at Highley where we also get some closeup shots which showcase the fantastic design build of the A4 locomotive. There is also two brief passing shots on Eardington Bank, where her wheels are finally seen in motion for the first time since late 2015.I hope you enjoy the return to steam of 'Sir Nigel Gresley'
45231 Sherwood Forester - Springtime Steam Scenes On The North Warwick Line ! Marsh Steam Videos™ 2022-03-20 | A glorious spring day would be the setting for the The William Shakespeare Excursion from York to Stratford via Crewe where Black Five 45231 Sherwood Forester would join the train.While the superb warmish weather was much welcomed it limited us to minimal filming locations as shots with the sun on the correct side are seriously lacking due to the line being heavily treed in. Just the three locations today, those being Wilmcote, Danzey Green and a rare shot along our local Sutton Park Line which ambles through North Birmingham. The best sequence for this video was Danzey Green, where rural North Warwickshire is shown at its best in full springtime glory. I hope you enjoy the brief scenes.
LMS 6233 - The Lady In Red Returns To The S&C In Full Glory ! Marsh Steam Videos™ 2022-03-13 | 6233 Duchess Of Sutherland makes her long awaited return to the Northern Hills and most importantly the Settle & Carlisle Railway. Not since the 5th August 2017 has the Duchess worked over the S&C and its been even longer since she ran in her red livery in the North of England, September 2009 to be precise. The excursion for this video was a Vintage Trains special starting out from our hometown of Birmingham, with steam coming on at Hellifield for the northbound run to Carlisle over the S&C. The return leg would be steam hauled from Carlisle all the way back to Crewe.The action starts at Little Stainforth where we are treated to one of those moments where everything comes together. Performance and lighting conditions being the major players in one of our most memorable scenes ever captured on the S&C ! We then see 6233 climbing past Helwith Bridge and then hitting the brief easing of the gradient at Arcow Quarry as it begins climbing again to Horton In Ribblesdale with its heavy train. No assistance was provided on northbound run and hopefully more of the same for the return trip.The return section was quite late and we would need a punctual arrival otherwise we would be pushing the light. We chose Stockber for the return as this would be one of the better lit locations on the Long Drag. Stockber is situated at the bottom of the Long Drag to Ais Gill. The Duchess is seen twice working very well with some lovely clag to boot ! This wrapped up the daylight filming and we were very pleased with the results.The final two locations start off at Langho Station on the heavily graded Wilpshire Bank, where the Duchess can be heard loud and proud tackling the 1/80 climb to Ramsgreave and Wilpshire, three angles capture the action. The final scene sees us head to Warrington Bank Quay, where the anticipation of a clear and fast run along the West Coast Mainline all came to fruition as the Lady In Red thunders through the main road at 72mph to top off one our best day's filming in recent memory, what a way to finish and to say she was going well would be an understatement !I hope you enjoy the sights and sounds of an unassisted Duchess back over the Northern Hills.
GWR 7029 Thunders Up All Stretton & Hatton Bank + Flying Scotsman ! Marsh Steam Videos™ 2022-03-06 | 7029 Clun Castle makes its first appearance of the year and it will go down as one to remember. A Great Western southbound run over the Welsh Marches line is very rare these days and the highlight would be the climb from Dorrington to Church Stretton. With 10 coaches in tow and a dead class 47, it would mean 7029 would have a near equivalent weight of 13 or 14 coaches to pull, so no half measures would be acceptable. I'll let the two opening sequences do all the talking, or shall I say barking !After the early dramatics up Stretton, it was onto Llanfihangel Bank, where we capture Clun powering along at Pandy on the lower part of the bank, she was going well considering the load. A shame we just missed the sun on this occasion. Having covered the Marches we would finally capture the Castle Class near to home, where Clun made a thunderous night time climb of Hatton Bank to bring the curtain down on a fantastic day for passengers and linesiders. While we're no fan of seeing a diesel on the back, there's no way we would of witnessed the added effort that 7029 had to produce if it was just 10 coaches. So, after the exploits of a GWR firm favourite, there was also another steam tour running close by and it just happened to be 60103 'Flying Scotsman' on its rearranged Cotswold Venturer excursion from London Paddington to Worcester. This is the kind of the bonus we like and I hope you like it too as the so called peoples engine was let out with 12 coaches and no diesel, you just love to see it, oh and she was going well ! I hope you enjoy the action from a very good day at the linesdide.
15 Steam Locomotives Tackle The Famous Shap Bank ! Marsh Steam Videos™ 2022-03-04 | A video compilation of fifteen preserved steam locomotives tackling arguably one of the United Kingdom's most famous railway gradients. The four and a bit miles of 1/75 through the rugged terrain of the county of Cumbria provides the ultimate backdrop and challenge for any classifications of steam power along with modern day loco hauled freight services. The Bank begins just after Tebay, this is followed by a long sweeping right curve through Greenholme which is located at the bottom of the bank. The pace and power through here can dictate what kind of climb your're in for as you power your way further up the hill. Scout green follows next, which is where the gradient starts to reveal itself on engine and crew, you then run out of sight until you re-emerge South of Salterwath, you are now half way up. Passing upper Salterwath, you now begin to see the upper part of the bank at Shap Wells where the edge of forest once stood adjacent to line, this was recently felled a few years to open other classic angles from decades ago. Once you pass the the felled forest site you are now on final approach to the summit and just a swift reverse curve under the high up footbridge is left to pass under until you top the summit of Shap ! All scenes and are in geographical order from bottom to top. All scenes are captured from 2013 to 2022. The only notable engine which should of featured running solo was 46233/6233 Duchess Of Sutherland but I was never able to film a Duchess tackling Shap which is shame, as they were notorious performers in the heyday of steam in this neck of the woods. Thankfully I have travelled behind a Duchess up Shap, so in theory I've had the full experience. While there's no solo Duchess the LMS is well represented, there is a Big Lizzie, Two Royal Scots, Two Jubilees and three Black Fives. Tornado, Union Of South Africa and Britannia all feature too. Even the fantastic sounding LNER K4 Class 61994, The Great Marquess features. I hope you enjoy the sight and sounds of steam action on Shap Bank.
LMS 45627 - A Grueling Climb To Ais Gill ! The Cumbrian Mountain Express Marsh Steam Videos™ 2022-02-27 | 45627 Sierra Leone aka Galatea tackles Shap and Ais Gill on the Winter Cumbrian Mountain Express. The Jubilee class is due to be withdrawn next month for an overhaul so it was good to see and hear that Jubilee roar over the Northern Fells once again. A couple of new angles on Shap and Ais Gill ticked off the location list.I hope you enjoy.
Britannia, Test Run #2 At Speed ! Marsh Steam Videos™ 2022-02-18 | All very short and sweet for the potential final test run for Britannia. following on from its light loaded run home from The Severn Valley Railway to Crewe, the Brit was kept in steam overnight and was to head round on LSL test circuit from Crewe to Crewe via Chester and Shrewsbury. The first three angles capture 70000 making good headway at walcot on the approach to Wellington. Ten minutes prior, we were sheltering away from heavy rain and gusty winds but thankfully it cleared pretty quickly. The final location was at Heamies farm north of Stafford, where 70000 is seen pelting through the rain as it comes off the slow line diversion and rejoins the WCML, the last scene is very short due to us arriving late to the location and having minimal time to setup.I hope you enjoy the sight of Britannia at speed.

Royal Scot & The Duchess - LMS Icons On February Tours ! Marsh Steam Videos™ 2022-02-12 | LMS 46100 Royal Scot and 6233 Duchess Of Sutherland make there first steam tour appearances of 2022 on separate excursions to York. Royal Scot is first seen on the 2nd of Feb hauling The White Rose on the climb through Chinley in dismal conditions. The Duchess is later seen on the 12th of Feb hauling The Valentine White Rose down Gamston Bank on approach to Retford along the East Coast Mainline. While the weather was much improved, a strong gusty headwind made my attempted 180 pan rather difficult, which resulted in a bit of messy end to it. Oh well, its not the easiest of shots. I hope you enjoy the first two tours of Febuary, roll on March and April when there are more excursions to get our teeth into.
70000 Britannia - Test Runs With The Ex Caledonian Sleepers ! Severn Valley Railway Marsh Steam Videos™ 2022-02-05 | B.R Britannia Class 70000 'Britannia' is seen running from Highley to Kidderminster on a period of extensive running in turns on the Severn Valley Railway. With the railway closed for maintenance the Loco was able to do plenty of runs over the last week. An interesting set of coaches was chosen to provide the load and these were in the form of ex Caladonian sleeper mark three coaches with a couple of ex GWR coaches too. The sleeper set is owned by LSL as is the locomotive. Steam locos attached to mark three coaches is rare and surely the addition of sleepers with steam is a preservation first ? While not the prettiest rolling stock to look at or photograph the idyllic landscapes of the Severn Valley help to brighten up the proceedings and its great to see Britannia finally back and we now look forward to seeing her back on the mainline. The Unlikely Duo ! Leander & Tangmere On The Winter Cumbrian Mountain Express Marsh Steam Videos™ 2022-01-30 | Another potential preservation first, sees an unlikely pairing in the form of LMS Jubilee 45690 'Leander' and Southern Railways light pacific 34067 Tangmere hauling The Winter Cumbrian Mountain Express. This would be Tangmere's first public run since returning from overhaul at the back end of 2021. The rare pair are seen cresting the summit at Shap and they are also seen on the the return leg at Crosby Garret and Waitby Common, the conditions on the return over the S&C was very lively as we were right on the edge of Storm Malik which made its presence known which you should be able to hear in the video. The action finishes at Ramsgreave and Wilpshire, where this time it was Tangmere's turn to do all the work after 45690 doing the majority on the outbound earlier.I hope you enjoy the sight of this unusual double act

The usual Winter Cumbrian Mountain Express tours start out of London but the first one's now start out of Manchester which requires the need for a diesel, all future WCME trains should return to the usual format of pure steam aka no diesel. With an overweight train for the Jubilee the diesel would need to help out little on the big climbs and especially on the late running southbound run to Shap with plenty of HST's approaching their rear end. Regardless of your opinion on the inclusion of the 'rear gunner' you cannot say that the steam locomotive upfront wasn't doing its part, as that famous 'Jubilee Roar' was more than evident !I hope you enjoy the action and fantastic backdrops as we get a taste what's to come this year ! Monarchs Of The Mainline - UK Steam Compilation 2021 Marsh Steam Videos™ 2021-12-26 | Mainline Steam Compilation 2022 Out Now !youtube.com/watch?v=-oFItAUTh7g&lc=Ugw5QlC3QpNrcRVtWTR4AaABAg&ab_channel=MarshSteamVideos%E2%84%A2The mainline steam scene for 2021 would start late this year due to the ongoing Covid -19 pandemic and operations didn't get going until May, almost half a calendar year had passed without the turning of any wheels. This year would see Saphos Trains consolidate their position as the second biggest player in terms of operations and excursions. Later on in the year we would see Vintage Trains make a delayed comeback to the Mainline steam market with their popular Shakespeare Express Sunday trains plus with the added inclusion of a selection of in house diesel excursions, which were marred by a few mechanical and operational issues. The return to steam of 7029 'Clun Castle' was also delayed due to mechanical issues which set back the full return to steam 7029 into the late summer but once the revered Castle Class returned she was soon back to her best. As usual West Coast Railways provide the bulk of the action as the main operators for steam and without them these videos would cease to exist. On a side note we are now seeing an increase in the use of diesels on the rear, though this is because Saphos Trains and Vintage Trains are now solely responsible for recovery costs on the mainline and in the case of Vintage Trains their whole train is Vacuum braked only, meaning a thunderbird rescue locomotive which is dual braked would be needed and there are not many across the network. While there is a diesel on back of many excursions, there is only a few occasions throughout the year where I've witnessed the rear end helpers take control and assist heavily, the majority stay quiet and at worst will take their weight with minimal power.So, in regards to this year there has been some great highlights and notable performances. Loco of year for us has to be Bahamas ! The double chimney Jubilee has spent the bulk of its time this year in the south and its exploits on the Royal Duchy will be remembered for a long time. Other notable scenes this year would see 35018 'British India Line' thunder over the S&C and Ais Gill on the first steam excursion of 2021. 60163 Tornado also put in arguably the best performance of 2021 with an all out attack of Ais Gill on the Pennine Explorer with 13 coaches on the hook. There was also the two Lickey Bank specials with 7029 Clun Castle and 6233 Duchess Of Sutherland laying siege to the 1/37.7 incline, with two awe inspiring approaches to Bromsgrove Station ! There was also an LMS double headed climb of the Lickey Bank featuring 45231 & 46100 which was lively. Clun Castle also signed off from its Shakespeare Express duty with a barnstoming run through Dorridge station on a summer Sunday to remember. There are plenty of other notable scenes and they are revisited in the video.Looking ahead to next year, we should see the return of 60007 Sir Nigel Gresley and the potential returns of 71000 Duke Of Gloucester and 70000 Britannia. The Great Britain Steam tour will also finally return and 34067 Tangmere should feature after completing its loaded test runs in Autumn of 2021. 7029 Clun Castle & LMS 6233 - A Christmas Weekend Finale ! Marsh Steam Videos™ 2021-12-19 | A day where the potential to capture three locomotives was on the cards but ended with the just the two due to 46100 Royal Scot failing on the Pennine Moors Christmas Express. Even with the loss of one locomotive we still had the delightful duo. To be honest the main star of this video is Clun Castle and we only caught two brief shots of the Duchess which are at the end of the video. While brief shots they were, Duchess Of Sutherland was going well along the East Coast Mainline on its final approach to York. We even got to see and hear the steam operated coal pusher in full affect with its cannon fire sound effect ! So there we are, I hope you enjoy our final steam outing for 2021... I think.
