IBW21st(Sat Sept 4, 12 PM ET) A Special IBW Labor Day weekend video premiere — Convict Leasing, Forced Labor and Theft of Black Wealth: The Case of the Chattahoochee Brick Company
Background:
The Chattahoochee Brick Company was a brickworks located on the banks of the Chattahoochee River in Atlanta, Georgia. The brickworks, founded by Atlanta mayor James W. English in 1878, is notable for its extensive use of convict lease labor, wherein hundreds of African American convicts worked in conditions similar to those experienced during antebellum slavery. It is speculated that some workers who died at the brickworks were buried on its grounds. The brickworks was discussed in Douglas A. Blackmon's Pulitzer Prize-winning book Slavery by Another Name, released in 2008. The property ceased to be an active brickworks in 2011.
The Institute of the Black World 21st Century is committed to building the capacity of Black communities in the U.S. to work for the social, political, economic and cultural upliftment, the development of the global Black community and an enhanced quality of life for all marginalized people.

#PanafricanismStatement by Dr. Ron Daniels, Convenor of NAARC, on President Bidens Apology for American SlaveryIBW21st2022-12-17 | Statement by Dr. Ron Daniels, Convenor of the National African American #Reparations Commission (NAARC), on President Biden's Apology for American Slavery.
The U.S. Africa Summit finally received some press coverage yesterday. 50 African heads of state were almost invisible, virtually whited-out for 48 hours. Breaking news was/is that #Biden apologized to African leaders for the role of U.S. in the holocaust of enslavement followed by a pledge of $55 billion in aid; a paltry sum compared to China’s huge investments to ensure access to Africa’s vast mineral assets. Nonetheless, a decent, noble and correct gesture.
But, what about reparations for the sons and daughters of Africans in the U.S.? We’ve been appealing to you for months Mr. President to create the HR-40 Commission by Executive Order? It borders on disrespect not to respond/act in the affirmative in memory of the late great Congressman John Conyers and the appeals of Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, lead sponsor of HR-40.
It’s past time to begin the process of repair of the injuries of enslavement and its legacies inflicted by the U.S. Government. It would have been awesome to apologize to African leaders and then announce your intent to enact HR-40 to “study and develop reparations proposals for African Americans!”
Mr. President, African Americans are waiting for you to act. Pick-up the phone and call Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee and inform her that on MLK Day 2023, you will announce your intention to enact HR-40 by Executive Order! #HR40 on MLK Day

Dr. Ron Daniels Calls on Mayor Adams to Convene Summit on Gun Violence — Warns Against Return to “Giuliani Style” Policing
Dr. Ron Daniels, President of the Institute of the Black World 21st Century (IBW) called on New York’s Mayor Eric Adams to convene an urgent Summit meeting involving a broad cross-section of stakeholders to explore just and safe solutions to the epidemic of gun violence, crime and fratricide/murders in New York.
Dr. Daniels issued the call on his weekly radio program, Vantage Point, which airs Mondays on New York’s WBAI, 99.5 FM. The call comes on the heels of President Biden’s high-profile visit to New York to meet with Mayor Adams, law enforcement and elected officials to outline his administration’s approach to addressing the epidemic of gun violence. The President also visited a community mediation center.
Dr. Daniels argued that the Summit should address the public’s legitimate fears and anxieties about crime and violence and secure input and buy-in from representatives of all sectors of the city, including faith, labor, civic and business leaders. He suggested that it was critically important to hear the voices and recommendations of representatives of community-based organizations as well as police and criminal justice reform advocates and violence interrupters working in affected communities.
Reflecting on the response to past spikes in crime and gun violence, Dr. Daniels warned against a return to what he termed “Giuliani style” policing. “We can’t go back to the days of stop- and-frisk, the shadowy Streets Crime Unit and para-military squads that inflicted so much harm particularly on Black and Brown communities, he said. “A Summit that brings together all sectors of the community can devise solutions that focus on public safety in a way that will create just, safe, wholesome and sustainable communities. This kind of inclusive Summit can create a model/template for other cities across the country,” he concluded.
Ronald Hampton, former Executive Director of the National Black Police Association, a retired officer from the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Police Department and Chairman of IBW’s Police Justice and Accountability Task Force said, “It is critically important that we have a comprehensive and inclusive conversation about public safety and law enforcement with institutions, agencies and non- governmental organizations that work in our neighborhoods every day. Our Task Force is willing to assist the process in whatever way we can.”
Dr. Daniels, aka the Professor in radioland, closed his appeal by saying, “We await a response from our Mayor, Eric Adams.”
