II | ALL VINYL DJ SET | 70S & 80S R&B | WHUR 96.3 TRIBUTE MAGIC 2025-02-09 | Quiet Storm Vol. II: 70s and 80s R&B Love Songs | All Vinyl WHUR Tribute DJ Set by MAGICFor close to 50 years, the Quiet Storm radio format has been one of the most recognizable institutions of black music.It’s something that black communities can identify both sonically and culturally. Whether it be the lush love songs or smooth voices from its DJs, whenever the sun sets, we know that the Quiet Storm is approaching.I wanted to celebrate Valentine’s Day and Black History Month once again by honoring the Quiet Storm’s origin story. That story begins in 1976 Washington D.C. with a Howard student named Melvin Lindsey. While standing in for a radio DJ one night at WHUR, an inexperienced Lindsay filled the airwaves with slow jams from his record collection, immediately sparking a radio revolution. He dedicated his life to sharing what he called “beautiful black music” to the world. Although we lost Lindsay to the AIDS epidemic, his voice and his music has lived on ever since that night almost 50 years ago.This all-vinyl mix is the second installment of love songs from my family’s collection, along with records Lindsay himself played during the early years of The Quiet Storm. While this mix leans more toward my interpretation of those moments, every record holds deep meaning to me, to him, and to his legacy.For a more historically accurate experience, I highly recommend listening to volume one. For over 45 years , the Quiet Storm radio format has been one of the most recognizable institutions in black music. It’s a late night programming block meant to share romantic, lush R&B of the past and present. It’s something that black communities of all generations can identify both sonically and culturally. Whether it be the romantic sensuous ballads or smooth voices from its DJs, we can always tell when the Quiet Storm is approaching.
