Behringer Kobol Expander (and the Leipzig V3) Starsky Carr 2023-12-15 | Here's my little demo of the Behringer Kobol Expander. It's a weird little synth, sounds nice, isn't perfect... but it's only £173. At that price it's a no brainer if you're in the market for a 2 VCO euro rack compatible analog synth. The only real competition is probably their own Model D, Pro-1, K2 etc. I got the Leipzig out to see if the envelope behaviour was typical or if its due to them being digital - I couldn't remember if my other analog stuff gave little occasional pops and clicks at the start of a tone with fast attacks. I've been keen to get one to play with, particularly as I've got a fair few synths that are MPE compatible, and haven't spent enough time exploring this side of them.In this I take a look at using it with the Synclavier Regen, Groove Synthesis 3rd Wave and the Sequential OB6.It's super easy to set up and adds sooooo much more potential for expression. With most videos I try to make at least one track using only the synth I'm demoing - it not only gives a great overview of what the synth sounds like in 'real-life' but also makes sure I've really given it a good going over before reviewing or demoing. It's a great way to make sure you've delved deep into what you want it to do.Also.. its fun (its the driving force behind making the videos) and they sound really nice!There was more to sift through thank I realised tbh - but a lot are such short 16 or 32 bar loops that they're useful in a demo - not so good as standalone tracks. In this video I compare the new ACB (Analog Circuit Behaviour) synth models in the Roland Fantom to its existing ABM (Analog Behaviour Modelling) Zen-Core Model Expansions. Isolating John Lennon’s vocals for remixing Starsky Carr 2023-11-09 | Looking at what 'common' tools we have to isolate vocal takes like The Beatles have just done with John Lennon's demo track - I had a play with Izotope RX10 to put a vocal on top of a 100% synth based electronic track.Working Class Hero was perfect as its a repetitive loop with only some minor changes to the guitar track. **NEW** Cherry Audio PS3300 // 3 polyphonic synths in a semi modular box Starsky Carr 2023-10-10 | This is one CRAZY synth!! 3 full polyphonic synths in one big box. Here's my review, demo and walkthrough of the Cherry Audio PS3300. It's a replica of the Korg of the same name from 1977. This is a great example of a unique and characterful synth from the days when they were figuring out how best to create and control the tones.Each voice has a single oscillator, lowpass filter, ADSR envelope and 2 LFOs. The resonators are a great addition - 3 resonant BP filters per voice - gives a lush or crazy phasing effect. Follow all this with Cherry Audios FX, and the scalable interface, MIDI control etc etc and you end up with something well worth picking up. Not just for bleeps and blops Pocket Operator Modular 400 Starsky Carr 2023-08-28 | Playing big, brash and melodic lines with other eurorack compatible kit. The Teenage Engineering Pocket Operator Modular 400 is so good at experimental and evolving ambient soundscapes using the onboard sequencer (which is much more flexible than it looks), that there's a whole lot of that already here on YouTube.The pocket operator modular series has been reduced in price - enough to tempt me into buying the 'big' yellow 400 to see what it's all about. I'm using it here with the Analog Solutions Colossus - just to have a listen to how well the little yellow one stacks up sonically to something with an undisputed quality tone. Boss Dm-101 vs RE-202 // Whats the difference? Starsky Carr 2023-07-27 | Sonically I mean... there are the obvious ones like the RE-202 is a digital emulation of the Space Delay whereas the DM-101 used 8 BBDs for a pure analog signal path.The DM-101 has a darker, more gooey tone, with the RE-202 being more precise (surprising to me as its anything but compared to digital delays) and having more tonal control. In fact it feels like we're entering a new more enlightened era. One where we can show more emotions... let's not call it a woke synth though, I could get in all sorts of trouble ;) Would it wear a pink cowboy hat if going to watch barbie? who knows - but it does display A LOT of emotion and dynamics.Just for fun I've swapped the 7 stages of grief to the 7 stages of enlightenment - because you do go through a process as you play with it. I haven't whitewashed over the negatives either as its all part of the journey. The Biggest and Best Synth Money Can Buy Starsky Carr 2023-07-09 | What can you do with one of these? I run through how I created a track using a whole load of functions as a single patch on the Analog Solutions Colossus Quartz. It gave me 5 big juicy tracks on analog beef that worked together as a single entity.There are 12 VCOs, 8 Filters, 8 Envelopes, 4 VCAs (plus 8 in the filters), 2 noise generators, S&H, random voltage generator, 2 spring reverbs, 2 ring mods, 2 32 step analog sequencers, an oscilloscope, touch control keyboard with 16 step sequencer, 2 31x15 pin matrices, a 10 channel stereo analog mixer, and 2 XY joysticks... ie a fair bit to play with. Behringer Pro 800 vs Prophet 600 // SOUNDS ONLY Starsky Carr 2023-07-02 | While I'm putting the finishing touches to my full comparison video here's some sounds to demo the similarities and differences between the Behringer Pro-800 and an original vintage Prophet 600 with the GLiGLi upgrade.FYI This was made using firmware 1.2.6 Simpler tones can be copied easily as the raw tone is all there in the oscillators. The filter envelope amount, sustain and cutoff work together slightly differently than the original so adding filter envelopes makes things a little more difficult, add to that the linear envelope shapes aren't the same - GliGLi updated the linear model in 2022 to reflect a more natural Prophet 5 Rev1/2 curve but this isn't in the Behringer. Plus Behringer have made the Pro-800 snappier, so the envelopes are not going to match on every occasion... not an issue in any way, every Prophet 600 with different GliGli firmware will be slightly different I imagine too... unless everyones updated to the 2022 version.Other differences include the Poly-Mod, filter and LFO modulation ranges aren't as wide in the Behringer - again I'll show more detail in my full comparison... coming soon :)Patch Banks, Samples + extra tutorials, and to show me some love ;)patreon.com/starskycarr starskycarr.comGet it here..
