On this day in 1967, IBM unveiled a new method for creating holograms with digital computers for the first time. A team in Texas used an IBM System/360 Model 50 computer to calculate the interference patterns that would be created if light waves were actually reflected from a real object. The creation of holograms numerically by a computer opened the possibility of obtaining 3D pictures of objects that exist only in concept, rather than in physical reality. The new technique greatly extended the usefulness of holography in engineering and scientific applications. And now, computer-generated 3D objects can be found everywhere, from video games to virtual reality.

Evans. The award has since become the preeminent recognition in the country for significant contributions to society through technology. All three IBMers won the medal for their work on the development of the IBM System/360, which revolutionized the data processing for the IT industry.
The System/360 was the first family of computers designed with both commercial and scientific use cases in mind, allowing customers to expand their systems as their needs grew — which was a first in the industry at the time. Mainframe systems have come to underpin much of the modern economy, securely managing transactions for the world’s largest banks, bookings for the world’s biggest airlines, and data for just about every industry.
IBM’s research and development into mainframe systems has continued to this day, up through IBM z16, the latest iteration of the IBM Z platform that brought industry leading AI inferencing and cyber-resiliency to the hybrid cloud. None of that would’ve been possible without the earliest pioneers on System/360.

Information about the mission’s performance was telemetered in real time back to Earth, from the IU. In other words, we need to define the necessary Tools for Utility. These start with foundational properties like availability, reliability, and stability that co-exist with the performance metrics of scale, quality, and speed. We need execution modes that support long-running jobs and threaded primitives to take advantage of system parallelism. We need middleware tools to bring together quantum and classical infrastructure. And we need Primitives with increasingly sophisticated error mitigation technologies. In this session we will share several product announcements toward delivering the Tools of Utility.
