A fine old Scottish folk song that my Scottish Mother and Auntie used to sing to me when I was a wee an . This song dates back to the 17th Century.
There are many variations in the lyrics of this great song and different takes on the storyline. My understanding is that A Shepherdess and the son of a Laird fall in love, but his snobbish parents ban him from seeing her.
Cowdenknowes is in the Borders region in south east Scotland.
The broom is a yellow flowering shrub that grows prolificly there, and is related to the wytch hazel. Probably the best recorded version of this song is by Borders artist Archie Fisher
