Machinery Breaks. When it breaks on a warship, there are safeguards in place to be able to fix it at sea. A lot of systems are redundant in one way or another on a submarine. for instance, you can operate the rudder and planes by hand if the hydraulic system failed. you wouldnt want to do it for long but in a pinch.....
Here we lost an o-ring on our starboard Torpedo bank flask. The Captain wanted it fixed. We had the O-ring on board. We just had to remove the nut, replace the O-ring., all the while the storekeeper is trying to find the specific O-ring in a sea of O-rings.
