First Generation British Rail Diesels were full of character and sounded fantastic. In this short video the Neville Grove Layout is taken on a nostalgic trip back to the early 1980's when these old beasts were showing their age.

The Class 31's were relatively underpowered so always seemed to be working hard, their engines gurgled whilst their turbos whined. The Class 40 'Whistlers' were even more distinctive with their high pitched turbos emitting a loud whistling noise.
Both are superb OO Gauge models that have been detailed and weathered in the Neville Grove Studio for my customer Pete Stojanovich. The Class 31 'Skinhead' is the Accurascale version, whilst the Class 40 is made by Bachmann. Both have been given a grubby, well used and tatty finish that epitomised the BR Corporate Era before sectorisation liveries appeared on the scene.
We're very lucky that several of each have been preserved and are in operational condition. I've recorded various sound effects over the years and have used some in the edit of Class 31's and 40's on the mainline and on preserved railways including The Spa Valley Railway, North Yorkshire Moors Railway, Epping Ongar Railway and the East Lancashire Railway.
