I can't find this on Gamespot's website -- perhaps it's no longer available? The great thing about this video is there's no E3 commentary or background noise. It's audio straight from the game experience! I also bumped up the gamma since it was originally extremely dark.

This video was one of several tutorials for the proprietary editor I helped improve the feature set and usability. Six Days in Fallujah was created using this tech.
This particular one was for the Outliner. The interface was a work-in-progress at the time it was recorded (2009), so you’ll expect some rough spots. The functionality and features however, were final for the most part.

Commentary transcript:
Hello, my name is Richard Rouse. I was the lead designer and writer on "The Suffering". What you're playing here is what we called "Level Zero".
This was a prologue we originally planned to be the first thing you played during the start of the game. It was added fairly late into development to provide a more interactive introduction to suck the player in.
And I think it did a lot of good stuff: it added a great establishing shot of the island, foreshadowed the final boss. it introduced Torque's family, and I think it featured some of the best voice acting we had.
But in the end we decided not to include it as the opening because it came off a bit contrived.
It also didn't pack the punch of the death row sequence and further delayed getting to the real game.
We've included it here as a bonus for finishing the game. So, I hope you enjoy it.Designing Action! (2008)Nathan Cheever2012-07-05 | A presentation on designing a great level for AAA games. Here's a walkthrough from the video game "Aliens versus Predator 2" developed by Monolith Productions. "Alley" is a Multiplayer level released on December 17, 2001 with the official "Multiplayer Map Pack 1". It comes in a variety of modes: Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Evac, Hunt, Overrun, and Survivor.
I was the designer solely responsible for its layout, construction, lighting, scripting, and balancing. The "Alley" map series were an instant hit with the fans, scoring 1st Place in AVP2 Multiplayer Maps of that season with a whopping 45% of the vote (2nd Place went to "Fury 151" with 14%).
At the time, most Multiplayer maps were static mazes and arenas. "Alley" introduced multiple stages and interaction events. Blastdoors, secret routes, destructible objects, and a periodic rainstorm presented more strategic opportunities for each species. Aliens, Predators, and Humans all had special places to leverage their unique skillsets. This extra layer of choice and narrative helped blur the lines between robust Singleplayer missions and frag-fest Multiplayer matches.

This particular video is for Evac. Before the evacuating team can escape, they need to find a trapped human in an invested section of the complex. They'll have to interact with (or kill) him to release the security code to lower the Dropship ramp. His location is marked as a red dot on Motion Trackers.

Game development back in the early 2000s was a lot easier, with less steps involved to bring a world to life. I only used Photoshop and the native editor to do everything you see in this video (minus the character animations and inventory).

Other projects soon took up my spare time and I didn't finish constructing the layout. I video captured what I had for curious fans.

One of the few (if not the only) easter egg locations in the game!
Once you jump on the conveyor belt in the Egg Storage room, you'll quickly move past the access point for the easter egg because the belt forces you in one direction.
Continue forward, jump into the Egg pool, then swim under and up to the power switch. Turning off the stasis field for the Egg pools also shuts down the conveyor belt.
Swim back to the first Egg pool, then re-enter the conveyor belt tunnel. Blowtorch the grate open. Snatch the goodies out of the weapon crate.
Continue exploring further back in the alcove. At the end, you can jump up to a vent. Crawl through and you'll discover a secret room where a Predator was collecting trophies. He succumbed to a facehugger suggesting another Predalien is on the loose...
The datapad entry was an inside poke at how the AvP2 team was yearning for greener pastures on other productions at Monolith (NOLF2, Tron 2.0, and Matrix Online). At the time Monolith was in 3 different office buildings in a Kirkland business park.

This pre-alpha version is from Chapter 3. For reasons I forget, this was replaced with the truncated one in the final release: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KC0_Z06rTdU. Since all the original geometry still existed, it was fun to re-construct what the pre-alpha version was.

This secret Designer's room is found in Chapter 17 (after the Drowning Pool).
Steps to unlock it: - Destroy all 7 Mainliner needles in the basement. - Destroy the Slayer head on the shelf near the front door. - Then destroy the Slayer head in the desk in the middle room. - Then destroy the Slayer head in the desk in the basement. - Once done, a breakable doorway appears in the far corner. - Break through it and enter the Lead Designer's (Andre Maguire) office!
- The Lead Systems Designer (Todd Clineschmidt) is dead under the window. - Carefully approach the Lead's body at his desk... - He'll swing around, wake up, and scream; causing his head to explode. - The telephone rings... - Answer it and a patient of Killjoy will speak with you briefly. - On the ground nearby is a broken, bloody guitar. - You'll also find Midway's 2005 catalog of games on the floor. - Exit through the doorway to return to the apartment basement.
Enjoy!
