I have wanted to do this track since I heard it but I was convinced I wasn't capable of playing the leads. When the Indie album was announced and It was offered to me I jumped at it but then the dread started to set in that I would mess this up. It took me quite a while to get round to attempting the guitar parts as I was worried I would try and not be able to do it and would just ruin the song. Anyway I completely shredded my finger tips getting this song down to the point I couldn’t carry plates properly at work the next day. Im really happy with how this one turned, I think it may be my best cover yet. So I put some game footage in the video. I like it being there and want to keep using it. But what do you all think? It’s such a great game, the soundtrack, art style and characters are perfect and completely immerse you in this dark world of sad bugs. The Grimm troupe section I thought was really enjoyable I thought provided a nice change of pace giving you little side quests, a new buddy and an awesome boss battle, although I must admit I didn’t beat nightmare King. I wanted to do one of the battle themes and I really enjoyed the Reno battle theme as it incorporates several other themes and also has that sick heavy break bit in the middle. I think this track may have some of the best heavy guitar riffs that I have put into a cover. The rhythms are really fun to play in this song. I really wanted this track to be the best work I have done to date so everything in this video from guitar playing through to the lighting in the video and I couldn’t be happier with how this one has turned out.Which leads me on to the special guest in this video. Hearing his version, I realised how epic it was. I duno I guess when I was playing the game, I always got too caught up in what was happening on screen. Any way I wanted to try recreate the whole orchestra effect on e multiple guitars but after recording multiple tracks for it, I felt it was getting very messy, so I dialled it back a bit for less is more approach. Had some more technical issues due to me not knowing how to use my equipment again which resulted in half the track needing to be re recorded as well, but at least now I know so I don’t make the same mistake again. I carried on trying out new lighting ideas in this one that I’m really happy about and I think I can improve on this more in the future. Messed up some camera angles again though oops. Overall, I’m really happy with how this track turned out. I think I have one more FF7 remake cover left in me, after that I think it’s time I delved into some different game OSTs. I’m not saying I wont return as there are still loads of awesome tracks in FF7 Remake but I want to do them justice and I’m not ready for them just yet. It’s not the third of the fourth either. A lot has changed since July due to numerous lockdowns and pandemic related things that I’m sure we are all going through.One of these things for me was a constant start/stop schedule that eventually led to a complete lack of motivation to be productive on my behalf. Hopefully, we are all getting through the worst of this and can push forward together.I decided to ease myself back in with a less complicated track. I didn’t realise how much I liked the Shinra theme until I started really listening to the entire OST and picked up on the shinra theme being scattered across the entire soundtrack.The cover did take me a couple weeks longer than I wanted but I wasn’t expecting to be doubting myself so much through this process. As I worked my way through this track, I felt my confidence returning and I’m very happy with the end result. Work has been a lot more demanding than I expected and I haven't really had the time to work on music as much as I would like.I tried using some more midi instruments for this one adding some Timpani and tubular bells in to the mix. I felt I couldn't really leave them out of this one as they add so much to the original track. I also tried out something with my phone that I used to use and now I remember why I dont use it. The front facing camera! Yea, I was running out of time to get the last bits filmed and quickly set up the phone that way to save time. I was curious to see if the quality difference would be noticeable. Turns out it was massive and I wont be doing it again.In other news I picked up a few plugins from Neural DSP and while they are not present in this track (except the solo), they will be used for all my covers from now on. Speaking of which, my next cover is from a game series that I have loved from the instant it came out, I have always wanted to do this cover since I started the channel but it was too much for me. I really enjoyed this section of the game (except for the giant hand puzzles, 4 play throughs and they get dull fast) even though you are in a combat section the area is more focused on the character development of Cloud and Aerith. Its one of what I feel is a happier section of the game.To represent this the music is very upbeat in comparison to the sector 5 slums theme. Mick Gordons riffs are real heavy. I spent along time trying to get the drums as close to the original. Probably the longest i have ever spent on programming drums.Now the Doom soundtrack has a lot of ambient effects on it and I'm a pretty basic guy when it comes to music, just plug in and riff away. I had to learn a lot of new techniques for this one like automating pitch shifts and eq sweeps, manipulating white noise, side chaining etc. Most of it the effect I wanted I didn't know what it was called so I couldn't look up a tutorials either. Yea i think i spent 8 hours on this alone just trying to make weird noises. Its all good in the end though as its good to learn new things, even if i did go about it the long way.Next week I have a Final fantasy cover for you. I have a limited amount of time to work on this channel and on the day, I wanted to record the video footage I was unwell so I think I’ve come across grumpier than normal in this one. It nearly Killed my channel.I have had so many issues with this cover. When I first started it, I struggled getting the riffs to sound how I wanted, so I took a break from it. Then when I worked it out, I realised I couldn’t play the leads at all which knocked my confidence so much that I didn’t want to keep trying. On top of all this my laptop was breaking down fast so I had to retire it. After that I just gave up on it and in a way I gave up on the channel.Flash forward to the present and having got myself back into the habit of playing again I decided it was time to tackle it again but this time I wasn’t going to just half ass it. I re-recorded everything and when it came to the leads, I tabbed it all out sat down and practised it until I was happy with it.Irritatingly when I copied the drums over they brought with them some glitches which I guess was a compatibility issue between old and new software but other than slowing me down a bit it wasn’t too bad.This cover caused me so many issues over the past two years that it eventually got to the point where I had to say Its done. Am I completely happy with it? No, definitely not. I’m not saying I hate it and want to burn my computer down to erase it, there are parts of this I’m proud of and parts I think could be better but its got to the point where I just had to finish it and be done with it. This track has been a massive learning experience for me even if it hasn’t turned out the way I wanted. If you have read all this rambling thank you. Reality kicked in a while back and I realised that the chances of this happening are slim due to the amount of free time I have. So, I thought another medley was the way to go.This came together really well (for me anyway), some of the transitions are a bit rough but I’m happy with it. Plus, I got to use a ton of guitars on this, most of them have not been used on this channel before. I also really enjoyed applying metal to all the different styles of music in this game.Had quite a lot of issues trying to film this one though. My iPhone is having issues sending files to my pc and my editing software doesn’t seem to like too many iPhone files being used at once, so I had to do half the video, render it and then carry on with the rendered file. Wasted quite a few hours working that out.Anyway, I have a different camera I’m going to try out soon and if anyone knows of a better alternative (free preferably) to Sony Music studio, please let me know.These video issues will carry over to at least the next two covers I do as guess what….I HAVE 2 MORE VIDEOS READY TO GO.The next video will be up in 2 weeks (might try squeeze another one in for Halloween) and I will try stay at 2 weeks for as long I can.If you enjoyed this, please share it about for me and let me know what you think in the comments section. Yea my life has had a fair bit going on to be perfectly honest I became overwhelmed and couldn’t put the amount of time I wanted into this channel and because of that I became frustrated that I couldn’t get anything done. It became a bit of a mental block stopping me from finishing tracks.Well that was until today cause yea this track is finished. I originally started arranging this for Halloween and kept on putting it off. Magfest came around and I realised how much I missed making music. It gave me that final bit of encouragement to just push through any walls that were in front of me and get this out.As far as the track goes my aim was to just get it out regardless of if I thought it was good or not but thankfully, I’m really happy with this. I’ve struggled with my guitar skills having slacked on practise while I have been in active and I completely forgot how to mix, master and edit videos. I’m also using my new computer so had to re build any pre-sets or make new ones.Oh yea, and I bought a new guitar a while back. Its pretty sick, makes me happy. As for the next video, I’m not setting a schedule. Ideally, I will get a video out every month but don’t hold me to it. Just know I’m in a good place, happy and motivated to make some more covers. In fact I don’t think I ever have done one but CasAvena asked if I could do this track and I had a listen and while I wasn’t sure what to do with it, I liked the track so put it on my to do list (its a long list). I quickly realized that the track isn’t that long and I would have to mess about with it a lot to keep things interesting. So I chucked some harmonies in there and came up with some little riffs and licks to keep it going. When it came to the solo I had this grand plan for a twin harmony solo that was mainly melody driven buuuuuut I then spotted my wah pedal that I have owned for a year but not really ever used and went nuts with it haha.Anyway the track turned out better than I had first thought so im happy. Sorry its not that long I have been pretty busy and wanted to get this out. I thought it was alright but could have been better. Strangely though as soon as I left I couldn’t stop thinking about the game and ending up getting back into it. I then thought it would be cool to do a track from the game as well. Originally I was going to do Thunderbluff but I couldn’t think of a decent arrangement so went for this epic track called Nightsong.I didn’t realize at first but the entire intro is almost in free time so I had to move chord timings about so that it kinda made sense when playing over the top. Unfortunately I forgot what I recorded when it came to doing the footage so it goes way out of sync for a second. SorryIm really happy with the 2nd half of the track. The riffs are quite simple but it came out really heavy so me im happy with that.Originally there was going to be a guest solo but unfortunately it didn’t happen so I did it. The solo was recorded last minute so I didn’t feel like getting the lights out.On a separate note my life started to fall apart so if I miss a deadline just bear with me. Especially Bonetrousle gave me a bit of a head ache And spear of justice was way way way faster than I had realized so took a long time to get a decent take on that as well. Needless to say I ruined another set of strings sweating all over them hah. For some reason I decided to do death by glamor faster than the original to make a transition smoother. I already knew I liked the music but having only played the first 5 mins of the game I wasn’t really sure if I would enjoy it but I decided that as I had a 10 hour train journey it would pass the time nicely. Fast forward 5 hours and I am staring at my computer screen wondering how I became such a horrible person. I couldn’t stop thinking about it for the next few days so I followed the flowers advise and played it again to get a ending I could live with. This game really is incredible and deserves all the hype.Now as for this cover I was planning on just not doing any Undertale songs but after playing it I felt I had to so I started work on one of two(potentially three) medleys. This first one is based on all the area themes and tracks from the game that I just enjoyed (Battle themes will come at a later date).I also put loads of effort in to gettign better angles and just in general improving the video quality. Took a long ass time to film all the footage but I am so happy with this medley. I think its the best thing i have done. My favorite track in the whole game is core. I found the bridge seen where your getting constantly attacked to be so epic (no matter what way I was playing the game). I tried to incorporate a few different styles into this one rather than my standard metal transition into metal medleys hah. I think this is one of the heaviest things I have done. At first I thought i was going to have to scrap it as I couldn't here exactly how it was going to sound in my head but I am pretty happy with the end result. Secondly no this is not a video game cover. I just got the pickups replaced on my schecter and did this compare the tones and commemorate this big event in my guitars life.I wasn't planning on doing the video at first and just have a background screen instead but I quickly recorded it before I took the guitar in to the shop so there are a few sync errors.
