It has been confirmed, Blumhouse and Universal are teaming up to reboot John Carpenter's 1982 Science Fiction Horror Classic and fan favorite, The Thing. News comes after producer Alan Donnes revealed that he has received his signed contract and first cheque as one of the film's executive producers, confirming that this production is being fast-tracked, likely for a 40th Anniversary release.
It has also been revealed that the story will borrow heavily from the novel "Frozen Hell" a recently uncovered preliminary, never-before-published manuscript by John W. Campbell, Jr., and the full version of his story "Who Goes There?" - the novella in which the original film is based on.
Blumhouse and Universal previously teamed up to bring us the 40th anniversary reboot of the Halloween franchise in 2018, which also saw the involvement of John Carpenter as an executive producer, and composer. No word yet if Carpenter will be involved in this project, or original star Kurt Russell, who played Outpost 31's helicopter pilot RJ MacReady.
This isn't the first time The Thing will be seeing a new adaptation. In 1990, Chuck Pfarrer pitched “The Thing From Another World” to Universal studios, which at the time was turned down, but went on to be published by Dark Horse Comics in 1991. Set 24 hours after the events of the original, the story continues to follow Kurt Russells character after surviving the events of the film. Dark Horse would follow this up with three more comic book sequels over the course of the next several years.
In 1999, Carpenter expressed interest in adapting Pfarrer’s comic, calling the story a worthy sequel to his movie, but again no studio was interested in picking up the project. Most likely due to the fact that the 1982 original was eviscerated by critics upon release, and knocked out of the box office running at the time by E.T. and Poltergeist.
Fortunately the film has since been reappraised, and developed a cult following over the years, which was enough for Universal to develop a video game under their game publishing label in 2002. The video game, of the same name, is a direct sequel and picks up shortly after the events of the original following a team of US Special Forces who are sent to investigate the aftermath of Outpost 31’s destruction. The game was a huge success and proved that there was still life left inside of this franchise.
In 2005, the Syfy channel planned a four-hour miniseries sequel produced by Frank Darabont and written by David Leslie Johnson. The story would have followed a Russian team who recover the corpses of MacReady and Outpost mechanic Childs, as well as the remnants of the Thing. The story would then move forward 23 years, where the Thing escapes in New Mexico, and would follow the attempts at containment. The project never proceeded, and Universal opted to continue with a feature film sequel instead.
But it wasn’t for another six years until the horror remake trend gave impetus to Universal pushing this project forward and The Thing finally found it’s way onto the big screen with a prequel film of the same name which was released in October 2011. The film starred horror movie regular Mary Elizabeth Winstead as a palaeontologist who is recruited by Norwegian scientists to investigate the extraterrestrial findings that we see the aftermath of in Carpenter’s original. The film, however, did not fare so well. With a disappointing box office run, and receiving poor reviews, it was seen as a subpar homage to the original that wasn’t accessible to casual movie audiences. It was also greatly chastised for ditching practical effects in favour of CGI.
