French cinematographers, Florent Piovesan and Thomas Teissier wanted to shoot their latest documentary about a florist using the new Blackmagic PYXIS 12K camera, which now features Blackmagic Design’s own YRGB 100 megapixel sensor!
“This was an actual short film I was working on with Thomas Teissier, who is a fellow French filmmaker. The documentary is about a florist living in Le Puy en Velay, which is where Thomas comes from. And so, we both wanted this film to look ethereal, with the florist immersed in the French landscape. We wanted some scenes shot at sunset, a midday scene in the open fields, an indoor scene and a bunch of different scenes in the forest, along with a water scene. And so we had this long list of things we wanted to shoot over the next three days. The thing that was tough about this shoot was the summer heat. It was some of the worst days we had in France, with the temperatures reaching 104°F.”
“The first thing I will say about this camera, is there wasn’t a scene it couldn’t handle. I mean, we could shoot everything we wanted thanks to the incredible latitude on this camera - and at any frame rate we wanted too! We shot at 12K 40fps and 8K 112fps, but mostly we settled on 72fps 3:2 slow motion for a large portion of the scenes. It was the perfect look for this documentary. This is a camera without compromises. It’s just that good! I have shot quite a lot on the URSA Cine 12K LF already and the PYXIS 12K gave me the same quality Blackmagic RAW files. It was just a great camera to shoot with when you’re moving quickly, as we were. Both Thomas and I got super excited about this camera, simply because it allowed us to shoot everything we had planned without any dramas. And I think that’s what makes a great camera.”
