The recent news about Walgreens closing its doors in Chatham has sparked a lot of conversation, but we need to look past the headlines and understand the "why" behind corporate disinvestment. While local leaders are calling this a "corporate crime," the reality is a complex mix of economics, declining populations, and a lack of local accountability.
In this video, I break down the numbers and the structural issues that lead to these closures. We’re talking about everything from how Pharmacy Benefit Managers (PBMs) squeeze profit margins on life-saving medications to how "front-end" retail sales—the stuff that usually keeps these stores afloat—are being decimated by theft, security costs, and online competition. It’s easy to point fingers at the big corporations, but we also have to talk about the disinvestment from the residents themselves, the high property taxes driving talent away to places like Atlanta or Miami, and the failure of elected officials to build real economic ecosystems in our neighborhoods. If we want to save our communities, we have to start with accountability and look at the game from an offensive coordinator's perspective.
