What do the Berlin Wall and the quantum structure of the universe have in common?
Meet Bianca Dittrich, a theoretical physicist and Faculty Chair at Perimeter Institute whose life has been shaped by both literal and scientific boundaries.
Growing up in East Berlin, Dittrich witnessed the fall of the Wall as a child, a turning point that profoundly shaped her path. Today, she’s a global leader in the search for a unified theory of quantum gravity: a framework that could reconcile Einstein’s general relativity with quantum mechanics, explain black holes, and reveal the very structure of space and time.
Her research explores how spacetime might emerge from tiny quantum units and how they connect to form the smooth, vast cosmos we observe. With recent breakthroughs in spin foam models and loop quantum gravity, Dittrich is pushing the field forward, even as she contends with immense technical challenges at the Planck scale.
Through it all, one thing remains clear: she’s still crossing boundaries.
