Every Online Game Is Seasonal Now… And It’s Terrible RazielReed 2026-08-26 | Just finished this unscripted rant about something that’s taking over almost every online game right now: the seasonal model. FPS, third-person shooters, looter shooters, MMOs… it doesn’t matter the genre.Call of Duty, The Division 2, and so many others all follow the same pattern: seasonal battle passes, cosmetics, locked guns and items that disappear when the season ends, and in some cases straight-up pay-to-win crap. MMOs get hit even harder. What used to be huge, living, open worlds (think Vanilla, Burning Crusade, Wrath of the Lich King) get condensed into temporary seasonal packages. Everything before the current season becomes mostly irrelevant except for cosmetic farms. Catch-up mechanics, borrowed power, and gear that doesn’t stick around turn the game into a never-ending treadmill. At the end of the day it all comes back to the same two things: money and FOMO.
