Toots Hibbert interview [UNCUT] PALM 2017-10-13 | “You cannot exalt yourself” says a man whose modesty, faith and generosity of spirit are manifest in this 1995 interview. It is then, left for others to observe that the history of Jamaican music would be much poorer without the contribution of Toots and the Maytals. We start at the beginning, in Clarendon, where his church singing, he recalls, “made people joyful”. Age 13, a country boy in Trench Town, he discovers the Coptic faith. Learns the barbering trade, proceeds from singing while cutting hair to cutting dubplates (with King Edward), before coming under the tutelage of Studio One’s Coxsone Dodd. Years of chart success follow, notwithstanding a ganga bust and prison stretch (“54-46 That’s My Number”). We hear about the origin of the word reggae, the philosophical and spiritual outlook embedded in the name Maytal, and much more. Stitt takes up the story with the crucial tracks he recorded for Clancy Eccles, describes how Coxsone’s Downbeat became the dominant sound of the day, and how he made a virtue of his unusual physiognomy, following the local popularity of the Sergio Leone classic “The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly”. The wonderfully named Count Machuki was the ur-DJ – the first man to talk over records, and as such can be considered the progenitor of rap. Beginning in the early 50s with the legendary sound system Tom the Great Sebastian, he became the number 1 selector, and was, as he recalls, the first man to play strictly Jamaican records. Edward Seaga interview [UNCUT] PALM 2017-03-23 | While the former Prime Minister’s politics divide opinion (to say the least), there is no denying his impact on the business of music in Jamaica. He certainly does not underestimate it himself. In today’s terms Seaga’s business practices would be termed “disruptive”. In his case, of the traditional “blank label” business. This, he suggests, opened the way for local music, and its eventual international success. As he tells Steve Barrow in this 1995 interview, he first approached music with the as an anthropological researcher in the 1950s, recording Jamaican folk music, both secular and religious. A Folkways recording followed, and then his own label, West Indies Records Ltd (WIRL). Ernest Ranglin interview [UNCUT] PALM 2017-03-14 | Coming from a country where self-aggrandisement has been raised to an art form, the guitarist Ernest Ranglin is conspicuous by his modesty. Serving at various times as musical director and arranger for the likes of Studio One, Federal, and Island Records, he’s had a hand in countless crucial recordings, including Millie’s massive hit “My Boy Lollipop”. In this 1995 interview he discusses with Steve Barrow, among other things, his early days playing with Val Bennett and the Eric Deans Orchestra, his love of Bebop, and the origin of the Ska beat.
