What happens when engineering ingenuity, cutting-edge technology, and six cans of beer meet at the edge of a hotel pool?
Welcome to the Microchip MASTERs Beer Boat Regatta, one of the most anticipated and crowd-favorite events of the conference. Over two unforgettable nights, teams of engineers, innovators, and competitors transform simple materials into high-performance racing machines, all battling for speed, efficiency, and ultimate bragging rights.
The challenge begins on night one.
Each team receives a custom Hyperdrive unit, a wooden frame equipped with both a port and starboard thruster module. Beneath the surface lies serious engineering power: each thruster module is driven by two 30,000 RPM EDF drone motors, delivering a combined 50 watts of propulsion. Control is handled through a custom remote and powered by the WBZ451HPE long-range Bluetooth® module, which provides wireless communication and integrated PWM motor control for precise maneuvering.
With only a 2' x 2' foam board, a razor saw, toothpicks, skewers, and duct tape, teams must design and build a hull capable of carrying six cans of beer while maintaining the perfect balance of speed, stability, and efficiency. Every curve, every cut, and even the placement of the Hyperdrive can mean the difference between victory and sinking hopes.
Then comes race night.
The hotel pool transforms into an arena.
Crowds gather around the water's edge as twenty custom-built vessels prepare for launch. The mission sounds simple: travel the length of the pool carrying six cans of beer. The reality is far more challenging. Competitors must navigate turbulent water, dodge human obstacles armed with pool noodles, and maintain control under pressure as they race against the clock.
With each round, the competition intensifies. Twenty boats become ten. Ten become four. Four become two. Only the fastest and most capable designs survive to reach the championship heat.
But speed is only part of the story.
Throughout every run, the Hyperdrive continuously reports real-time thruster activity through a BLE gateway powered by the Microchip SAMA7 Curiosity Board. Data is streamed live to Avnet's /IOTCONNECT platform, where race times, energy consumption, and performance metrics are displayed on a live leaderboard for competitors and spectators alike.
Every watt tells a story.
Boats are measured not only by raw speed, but also by efficiency, with energy consumption converted from kilowatt-hours to calories and ultimately to milliliters of beer. The result is perhaps the most important metric in all of marine engineering: Beer per Nautical Mile.
As the final contenders battle for supremacy, six coveted awards await:
🏆 Fastest Boats – Top three overall race times
🍺 Thirstiest Boat – Highest energy consumption during a run
⚡ Brew Efficiency – Best Beer per Nautical Mile performance
🎮 Smoothest Operator – Lowest throttle variance
Part engineering challenge.
Part IoT showcase.
Part spectator sport.
Part controlled chaos.
The Microchip MASTERs Beer Boat Regatta is where creativity meets competition, Microchip technology meets real-world innovation, and six cans of beer become the cargo in one of the most entertaining races at MASTERs.
