After a few decades of being obsessed with collecting survival and primitive skills techniques, I am putting out these videos to demonstrate the skills and excursions found at my school, Wild Survival (wildsurvivalskills.com). Videos are focused on primitive skills, rewilding, nature awareness, living off the land, off grid living, indigenous skills, shelter building, primitive fire, water purification, trapping, hunting, bow making, flint knapping, primitive pottery, basketry, edible and medicinal plant preparation and numerous indigenous skills.
I began studying wilderness survival when I was 17 in order to have the ability to spend extensive periods of time in nature, seeking out empowerment and without the need for external sources. I began studying in 1993 under Tom Brown Jr eventually teaching for Tracker Inc. I sought-out every old Native American teacher I could and eventually traveled the world living in very remote indigenous villages in the Amazon, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia and Peru. My school teaches survival and primitive skills, nature awareness, how to live off the land, re-wilding, prepare for disasters. I strongly believe that experiencing survival living changes the way people approach their entire lives.

Instagram @wildsurvivalskillsTraditional Bow Making Course A few clips of the processTom McElroy-Wild Survival2018-01-02 | Just a few clips compiled from a recent traditional bow making course run at the Sun Foundation in central Illinois. In this class each student carves, scrapes and sands a seasoned split log--making it into a fully functional hunting bow. The bow-stave wood is from the Osage Orange tree--one of the most prized and effective woods for bow-making. We spent 3 days making a bow that will take down any animal on this continent. If interested in taking this class please get in touch via my website...i will be running a few throughout the US this year. In this class you will be instructed in the stages of making your bow and receive close guidance in the art of shaping and tillering a hand-made bow. Because every hand-made bow is unique, the group atmosphere will allow you to learn at an accelerated rate--as everyone gains insights from each other's bows. This is one of my favorite courses and will become your most unique hobby/obsession. Each student will leave with their own bow.Survival Trip in Aboriginal Australia Mäpuru Homelands, Ylongu Northern TerritoryTom McElroy-Wild Survival2017-09-25 | Despite what you may see on television, the true survival experts of the world are the 300 million indigenous peoples currently living in close connection to their ancestral lands. To learn from them is to learn from the true masters. The Yolngu Australian Aboriginal people of Mäpuru are living with dignity on their ancestral homelands, and have an unbroken connection to their culture and country- spanning over 60,000 years.
This video shows some highlights of a recent trip where I was able to learn from, and travel with the Yolngu people of Northern Australia thanks to old friends at http://www.naturephilosophy.com/. Just a few times every year the community invites small groups onto their country - to share in their lives, their wisdom and learn traditional earth skills. This is for the benefit of their children and all future generations. And, hydrocyanic acid, found in Almonds, is burned off when heated, this is why we roasted them. And lastly, the spines of Lion Fish are toxic if they stick you, the fish meat is not, it is very commonly eaten, so we cut the spines off and were all set.
