Chess Stop Action Film w/ Free Jazz Soundtrack ChiTownSoundz 2022-06-13 | A personal experimental stop motion film made by educational filmmaker, Thomas G. Smith. He had no script or plan when he started improving as he went. This resulted in a film with no sound. Two years later, while recording the improvised music track for “Food From the Sun,” Smith asked the musicians to take a crack at the chess film. They agreed and recorded the track in one take. Though primitive, “Chess” shows what can be done with no budget but a lot of improvisation. Much recognition must be paid to those who provided the sound/music. Alas, they did not get a screen credit and nearly 50 years later remain unknown."Addition note from The Academic Film Archive of North America director Geoff Alexander: the soundtrack bears the earmark of the well-known Chicago avant-garde jazz group AACM http://aacmchicago.orgAnother update this from the description to “Food From The Sun “The avant-garde jazz music score is thought to be performed by the Art Ensemble of Chicago. I projected the sequences where I wanted music and they improvised as it ran. I probably projected it four or five time and they dabbled with various approaches. Then we recorded it. They consisted of brothers Al Nevins on guitar and Morty Nevins playing accordion along with their cousin, radio and vaudeville veteran Artie Dunn on vocals, electronic organ. Their hits came in the mid 40's “Twilight Time” sold over four million copies and “Peg o' My Heart” was one of the best-selling records of 1947. They also appeared in nine Soundies and appeared in two films; Alfred Hitchcock's Rope (1948) , and Two Gals and a Guy (1951). It was said that they were Mrs. Eisenhower's favorite group. He's a showman in the set I saw him he played on one leg behind his back and with his teeth. This year he returned to the 2022 blues fest playing on the big stage. Erwin Helfer, Chicago Blues Fest 2022 Georgia ChiTownSoundz 2022-06-10 | After a three year absence the Blues Fest returned to Chicago for a four day stint in early June. The blues extravaganza was kicked off with a performance by boogie woogie orignator Erwin Helfer. The pianoman, who staddles jazz and blues, is a Chicago native who also spent a lot of time in New Orleans. Helfer was mentored by William Russell, who introduced him to Glover Compton, Baby Dodds, Mahalia Jackson, Cripple Clarence Lofton, and Estelle Mama Yancey. Duke Ellington Jam Session 1942 Jazz Soundie ChiTownSoundz 2020-03-05 | Soundies were the first music videos that played in audio visual jukeboxes. Their heyday started in 1941 and for the next seven years almost two thousand three minute clips were produced. This early one is a gem featuring the jazz giant Duke Ellington. While the music features Ellington's entire band the clip shows only the soloists, besides Duke on the piano, are; Ray Nance (violin), Rex Stewart (trumpet), Ben Webster (tenor sax), Joe “Tricky Sam” Nanton (trombone), Barney Bigard (clarinet), Sonny Greer (drums) and the string bassist Junior Raglin. A bar has been in this spot for years but only recently offered live music. The Chris Green Quartet w/ Epic Drum Solo Oak Park 6/20/19 ChiTownSoundz 2019-06-21 | Radio station WDCB presented a night of jazz as part of Oak Park's Thursday Night Out concert series 6/20/19. I arrived late missed the first group but caught about half of the set by the Chris Green Quartet. A shame because I really liked what I heard from this group. Keith is joined by; drummer Steve Corley, Damian Espinosa mans the keys and Marc Piane plays bass. He doesn’t make his home in Mississippi Delta or Chicago’s South Side, like a lot of the blues presented at Chicago's 2019 blues fest. Rather he hails from Agadez, Niger, deep in the Sahara desert. I had some technical problems that kept me from recording a whole song so this clip melds two. Some 20 years ago Mr. Coleman was a barber cutting hair in a shop above a music store. One day he picked up a harmonica on a lark and that choice led him to become a bluesman. In the past five years he has released three albums and toured across the country and Japan.

He is a protege ofMississippi blues men like R.L. Burnside, and Mississippi Fred McDowell. Boyce began his career in the early 1960s as a drummer for his uncle fife and drum performer Othar Turner, and later he was drumed for Jessie Mae Hemphill. All the while waiting to pick up the guitar and front his own band. The sound he brought to Chicago Blues Fest 2019 was so thick and powerful it made my pant legs flap. The best way to sum up his performance is as R.L. himself says, “Most of it, when somethin’ hits my mind, I just start. I don’t do no rehearsin’ with nobody. I don’t do nothin’ like that. Whatever hits me, I jump in on it.”

It's not the headliners that play evenings on the main stage but the little known acts that play the smaller stages in the afternoon. Willie opened the Front Porch Stage at around 11 Sunday morning.Willie was born Willie Crawford in Houston which is not far from Tupelo in the blues drenched state of Mississippi. He moved to Chicago in the 1950's and took a job as a mechanic. He spent a long time sitting in with blues stars like Eddie Taylor before he began leading his own bands. “Disco Blues” a 45 was Willie's first released recording. In this clip we see him doing the Muddy Waters classic “Mannish Boy”.

James Super Chikan Johnson, Sippi Seekan Saw, Chicago Blues Fest 2019 ChiTownSoundz 2019-06-12 | James "Super Chikan" Johnson brought his brand of delta blues to Chicago's 2019 Blues Fest. Super Chikan has been playing music for almost 50 years. He got his name as a child due to his fascination with chickens and the sounds they made. Go figure I thought it was because he's got an all female band. At any rate here he does a little tune called “Sippi' Seekan' Saw” about the area where three states come together.In the middle of that area is Clarksdale Ms., his hometown and the self proclaimed birthplace of the blues. Among the bluesmen who have called Clarksdale home are; Son House, John Lee Hooker, Junior Parker, Ike Turner, Eddie Boyd, Sam Cooke, Muddy Waters, Pinetop Perkins, Earl Hooker, Lil Green, and one of Super Chikan's uncles Big Jack Johnson. It's also where Robert Johnson sold his soul to the devil and where Bessie Smith died.James Johnson is also a visual artist who makes one of a kind insturments.
