BattleTech Warships: The Narukami Class Destroyer
A cheap price paid first—
then costly maintenance bills.
The fool’s true payment.
The Narukami-class destroyer was the first WarShip designed and manufactured domestically by the Draconis Combine, entering service in 2380. Despite the Combine’s limited industrial base, the Narukami was a formidable vessel that reflected its nation’s focus on small but powerful ships and swarm-based naval tactics.
At 670,000 tons, the Narukami was slightly smaller than the Lola-class destroyer of the Terran Hegemony, but outperformed it in both thrust and protection. Its massive engines granted a 33% greater acceleration, while improved ferro-aluminum armor doubled its defensive strength. Armed with Naval PPCs, NAC/35s, and a suite of energy and autocannon weapons, the destroyer’s firepower exceeded most of its contemporaries. However, its structural reliability proved a lasting weakness—frequent engine stress fractures and system failures plagued the class throughout its service life.
Although the Narukami was cheap to produce, high maintenance and operational costs made it impractical in peacetime. Most were mothballed following the Reunification War, and by 2765, only six Block I vessels remained active. The subsequent Block II redesign replaced ferro-aluminum with ferro-carbide armor, reduced mass, and reworked the flight decks to support aerospace fighters, transforming the Narukami into the backbone of the resurgent Combine Admiralty.
The destroyers saw heavy action during the Succession Wars, but the destruction of the Combine’s shipyards ended any hope of long-term upkeep. By the Jihad era, all surviving Narukamis had been scrapped. Yet their influence endured—later ships such as the Kirishima, Inazuma, and Tatsumaki inherited much of the Narukami’s design philosophy, and in some cases, its reputation for unreliability.
