Originally created by the great spirit robot 'Mata Nui', the league of six kingdoms were a band of powerful warlords said to be the 'pinnacle of physical specimen' which ruled over their respective tribes. These 'Barraki' each led their own armies in order to keep the peace and defend their territories.
At the height of their power, they had control of almost all the territories within the known microcosm. With their dominance thought to be assured, they sought out to overthrow the 'Mata Nui' and place themselves as the ruling conscience of the known universe.
A traitor within their midst was not contempt with this and leaked their secret plot to the 'Brotherhood of Makuta' - A primitive organisation of 'shadow beings' which marched their army onto the fortresses of the Barraki and imprisoned them with the help of Agents from 'The Order Of Mata Nui'.
The Barraki were teleported to 'The Pit' - A prison for all the most dangerous criminals within the microcosm and overseen by weapons master Hydraxon. However, a seed had been planted in the brain of one of the Makuta brothers. He planned to take control of the brotherhood and become the dominating conscience in the microcosm for himself.
This eventually led to 'The Great Cataclysm' where the rogue Makuta leader infected the Great Spirit Robot with a virus. This caused Mata Nui to go into a great slumber with great earthquakes and destruction occurring across the lands. This damage was irreversible and as a consequence, 'The Pit' was destroyed.
With Hydraxon dead and a mutagenic substance called 'energised protodermis' being exposed to the former Warlords, these pinnacle of physical specimen were transformed into grotesque parodies of their former selves. Being reminiscent of the deep sea creatures around them, they used their natural inclination for leadership to build up armies of sharks, killer eels and alike.
Upon the Discovery of the Ignika (Mask of Life) when it fell into the ocean, the Barraki sought after it with all their rage and fury to try and use it's power to transform themselves back. The 'Toa Mari' (fierce warriors from the various casts of the their previous tribes) were engaged in battle with them as they tried to prevent the rogue Makuta from seizing it in his bid for power.
Realizing their precarious situation, the Toa were beset by the 'creeps from the deep' as they battled the warlords and their new armies of sea creatures.
