After much planning, we left England 18 months ago to build a new life in beautiful rural Portugal #SerraDaEstrela - It's not been easy, but it has been wonderful.

DO NOT ATTEMPT TO TREAT PARVO AT HOME UNLESS YOU REALLY HAVE NO OTHER CHOICE! MORTALITY IS MUCH HIGHER IN DOGS THAT DO NOT RECEIVE VETERINARY INTERVENTION.

Parvo Virus - Our experience
Parvo virus is a highly transmissible virus that affects dogs & also related wild animals such as foxes, wolves.
It does not affect cats or humans.
Parvo virus is mainly transmitted by the faecal route and can persist in the environment for months.
Some symptoms of Parvo are common to other diseases, gastro-intestinal obstruction or poisoning.
As you can imagine, when Maya became lethargic, went off her food and water and began vomiting, we were very concerned as to what could have happened. It was already mid evening, so we made her comfortable but chained her up outside for the night but not before I had had a long chat with my amazing cousin Sarah who is a top veterinary surgeon at Fitzpatrick's Referrals. You may well have caught glimpses of her on TV.
Early the next morning, having spoken to the vet in Guarda at 10pm - Thank you Vetmed - we were at the vet having her checked out.
Parvo attacks the gastro-intestinal tract, causing the villi (finger-like structures that increase the surface area of the gut and therefore its efficiency) to break down. It can also attack the lining of the stomach and the throat. Vomiting, bloody diahorrea and the inability to eat or drink means rapid dehydration. Parvo has a very high mortality rate, and is most virulent in puppies & young dogs under 18 months due to their smaller size and les-developed immune systems.
Maya was put on a drip to keep her hydrated and so that she could be given glucose as needed & then the virus ran its course. We would only know that she was on the mend when she started to eat again. Thankfully, on the third day, she tried drinking water, then a couple of days later she managed to keep solids down & we were able to bring her home for a total of three baths, and a diet of boiled chicken - no skin, no bones, no herbs or salt.
It took her a good week to get back to herself.
Thanks for reading & I hope that you found it interesting. I did a lot of research whilst Maya was unwell, and although these diseases can be devastating, there is a vaccination schedule that requires boosters to be effective. Unfortunately, Maya had not had the appropriate booster, so I really would urge anyone to get their dogs vaccinated properly.
Of course, if you have an animal in your care that is sick, seek professional advice at the first opportunity.
