The Legend of McCulloughs Mountain (1975) - Bigfoot monster movie (synchronized audio) Raymond Castile 2023-12-27 | Presented in the modern miracle of synchronized sound. The Legend of McCullough's Mountain is a re-edited version of a 1965 micro-budget horror comedy called The Legend of Blood Mountain starring George Ellis as a bumbling reporter named Bestoink Dooley who travels to a small Georgia town to investigate a series of murders attributed to a monster living on a mountain that periodically oozes human blood. Different edits of the film were released under the alternate titles Blood Beast of Monster Mountain and Demon Hunter. In the 70s, a distributor shot new segments and re-cut the film into a Boggy Creek-style pseudo documentary to cash in on the then-current Bigfoot movie fad. The '75 edit replaced the original's rubbery Swamp Thing-like monster with a hairy Bigfoot creature seen only in backlit silhouette. I had never watched the film until Christmas day 2023, when a discussion about the movie's one sheet poster inspired me to seek it out. I was disappointed to find that every online version of the '75 cut had a horribly out-of-sync soundtrack. The audio was several seconds ahead or behind each shot, making the film unwatchable. I wanted a version I could enjoy, so I edited the audio to sync it to the picture shot by shot. After years of hearing how bad this movie was, I was surprised to find it quite fun and effective. Bestoink is a prototypical Kolchak with an annoyed editor who yells at him while he tries to pitch a story about a monster. As a former reporter, I could identify with some of the early scenes of Bestoink arriving in the town and questioning the locals. There are stock music cues from the same library used in Night of the Living Dead, which sets a nice, creepy tone. The 70s documentary segments are jarring, but have a clumsy charm. They come across as almost a parody of 70s Bigfoot docs. The 60s/70s hybrid approach reminds me of Curse of Bigfoot, another non-Bigfoot film that was re-edited with new material to cash in on the 70s Bigfoot craze.

Witch Suite by Raymond Castile - Sequential Prophet 5 rev4 synthesizer, Spitfire Audio piano & choir Raymond Castile 2023-01-13 | I was sick after the holidays, and so I fell behind on uploads. I will have new Basement of Horror episodes soon. In the meantime, here is a synthesizer music video to keep you entertained. I composed this in October for the Bleak Sunday Topstone Hag/Witch video. I had not intended for the music to stand on its own, but I thought I had better give my viewers something to watch/listen to, lest they presume I'm dead. Obviously, this music is inspired by John Harrison's score for Creepshow. I composed and recorded it a few hours before I uploaded the Topstone video. I was rushing to meet the Bleak Sunday deadline, so I slammed this out as fast as I could. I used Spitfire Audio samples for the piano and choir, and a hardware Sequential Prophet 5 rev4 synthesizer for most everything else. This suite includes only the music I created specifically for the Bleak Sunday Topstone video. That video also included some previously released music, like Eerie Atmosphere, that you can find elsewhere on my channel.

In this video, I compare two vintage Topstone rubber masks that were the subject of a 12-year experiment. The second half discusses the fan reaction to the RZ Munsters movie, and my thoughts on the film. It was a fun Halloweeny activity, like watching a Charlie Brown or Paul Lynde Halloween special. I thought it was sweet in a lot of ways. The Count (Grandpa) is who I want to be when I grow up. Dan Roebuck stole the show, as expected. He's obviously having the time of his life, and his joy is infectious. But everyone was good. In the trailers, I wasn't keen on what I was seeing from Jeff Daniel Phillips as Herman. But in the context of the film, it clicked. He made the character his own, and I found myself liking his interpretation. Sheri Moon Zombie was charming and charismatic. I liked the garish fantasy world and crazy colors. My biggest complaint would be that the story loses steam two-thirds in, just when it should be building to a climax. There is a plot complication that should set up the big conflict/resolution for the final act, but it's brushed aside too easily. Instead of finishing that plot, it feels like it skips over the ending and jumps to the start of a second film. But it's all very good natured, so I was able to "just go with it." Thinking back to the two Addams Family movies and TB's Dark Shadows, I'm reminded that, in all three films, I was bothered by how the final act exploded into CGI manic chaos, instead of more grounded, character-based plot resolution. So perhaps it's just as well that The Munsters skipped the chaotic, slam bang final act that I was expecting. I liked the Halloween scene with all the Topstone masks. I like seeing Sylvester McCoy in anything. Like Dan, he seems like he's having fun, and the two have great chemistry. I felt sorry for poor Count Orlok. I hope he finds a nice girl who appreciates his rats. I enjoyed all the Easter Eggs...the Return of the Vampire werewolf design, the Randotti Disneyland magic store display, the Blind Dead Templar, on and on. So, it was fun. Like carving a pumpkin or going on a haunted hayride. It's not going to give Kubrick or Kurosawa a run for their money, but it's not trying to do that. The trailers did not do the film justice, especially the first one, but I can understand the initial skepticism. Now that the film is out, it doesn't deserve to be a punching bag. It's a good-hearted, "kid friendly" monster mash, and it's not like there are a ton of those around these days.

Blade Runner Main Titles (2022 remaster) Vangelis tribute Raymond Castile 2022-05-30 | I recorded this and uploaded the original version in December 2016. It became, by far, the most popular video on my channel. Like all Vangelis fans, I am deeply saddened by his recent passing. I know many fans are recording pieces in his honor, and I might do that as well...but for now I wanted to dust off this old recording and make it sound better. I haven't added any new instrumentation. All I have done is adjust the EQ, effects, panning and compression. Otherwise, this is the exact same recording I uploaded in 2016. Many people have told me I should have added more reverb to the original. Well, now you have more reverb! Perhaps someday I will re-record this from scratch and add more elements to make it sound closer to Vangelis' recording. But for now, I like it as it is...a snapshot of a moment in 2016 when I did what I could with what I had. Thank you, Vangelis, for providing the soundtrack to my life, from my childhood to the present. You are gone, but your art and expression will live on within us, your legions of lost children.

The toys included action figures, inflatables, bop bags, paddle balls and other rack toy novelties. The Universal toy line came on the heels of Imperial's giant monster toys based on Godzilla and King Kong, as well as their generic dinosaur and dragon figures.This is the penultimate episode of the season.
