The purpose is to slowly ramp up the fan speed instead of turning fans on full at the start of the second layer for PLA prints.
It's common to print the first layer with fans off to improve sticking to the bed. However, it's also common to print the first layer at a very reduced speed, and the PID heater function gets used to the rate that the hotend dissipates heat. When the second layer starts and the speed triples, the hotend suddenly begins losing heat much faster and the temperature drops before the PID recovers from the surprise. This is the worst time to turn the fans on full, right as the temperature is about to plummet, and can cause it to drop so low that it causes problems or even stops extruding.
By ramping the fan speed up slowly, the fan airflow does not immediately have much impact on the hotend temperature, and as the temperature is recovering from the drop and stabilizing, the fan speed continues to slowly increase, so instead of the fan hitting at the worst time while the temperature is on it's way down, it's picking up speed and airflow becomes significant as the temperature is already on it's way back up.
The result is a 5-6C drop in this example, instead of a 15-20C drop that can happen without ramping. This does not require any gcode or slicer support, it happens entirely within Marlin and the slope of the ramp is configurable.
github.com/OhmEye/OhMarlinUnintended Ocean Landing in South MauiOhmEye2014-06-21 | My CTH Albatross decided to do an impromptu ocean landing test shortly after launch.Sunset Test Flight 1 on South MauiOhmEye2014-06-07 | This was a short impromptu test flight with my CTH Albatross that I flew shortly after sunset at my usual site on South Maui. I was prepping batteries for tomorrow and realized it was almost sunset and perhaps the wind would die down as it often does, so I went out and resulted in this short test flight.
I had two primary test goals, new 5G8 antennas I made on the video transmitter and both receivers, and new PID settings for level flight mode to reduce oscillations and wagging. The level mode was much improved (Horizon mode on Baseflight) but the antennas didn't have great performance. My goggles VRX signal quality was pretty crappy compared to the signal the DVR/LCD VRX was showing me, so I flew most of the flight using the LCD.OhMini H FPV Prototype Test FlightsOhmEye2014-05-17 | This is some boring video mostly for my own reference of some FPV flight video testing of one of my prototype mini quads. http://smu.gs/1lTfoff The goal of these flights included video interference filtering tests, frame and component mounting tests, and discovering general issues. Things I learned: I think my LC filter needs to be moved to be directly at the camera input. Motors are still causing video jitter. I'd like to have just a couple mm more prop tip clearance. I want more secure VTX antenna mounting. It should have better camera protection. I look forward to swapping out the Suppo motors for SunnySky motors. My voltage sensor is calibrated well and the OSD alarm set to a reasonable value.OhMini H FPV Video TestOhmEye2014-04-26 | This is a short test flight to test basic video systems as I tune and tweak my OhMini FPV quadcopter design. I still have some video interference to clean up and some component positioning and frame changes to make, but I think it's generally a success so far. Pics at http://smu.gs/1lTfoffThird Flights of my CTH Albatross on MauiOhmEye2013-12-23 | Took my plane out for some more testing and playing, after repairing the broken fuselage from yesterday's outing (I snapped it in half, hitting a tree!). Had my lovely wife on launch duty again, too! At first the controls seemed very tail-heavy and/or strong tendency to turn right, so I landed a couple times to check the controls and balance. I didn't find anything actually wrong, but on the 3rd launch it was flying properly and very well so I just went with it.
The wind came up a bit during the flight but was not much problem. I could almost hover into the wind near the end! Much less waggling/oscillating today, too. The only strong waggling was while turning in crosswind, which I think is reasonable and really didn't have much impact on control. I managed to avoid hitting any trees and had no crashes, but I did clip the top of a palm tree once! I got about as far out as visually safe, and did some fun close-in slow flying.
All the systems worked great, too. Battery lasted for 28 minutes total in the air, I was at half or less throttle most of the time. The OpenLRSng running on OrangeRX hardware worked very nicely, and my DIY antennas had no range problems, I didn't hear any telemetry packet loss beeps even at the farthest range I flew which was about as far as I could see visually. The same 808#16D camera on the wing again, with another 808#16 on my hat for the ground video.
The plane is a Albatross from CrashTestHobby.com, using MG90S servos. Radio is a Turnigy 9XR with OrangeRX TX and RX modules running OpenLRSng with a DIY turnstile antenna tapes under the right wing and aDIY moxon antenna on the 9XR. Motor is a Turnigy 2822/14 with a 7x6 prop powered by a HK BlueSeries ESC. Flight Controller is an Acro Naze32 running Baseflight in passthrough mode, for testing the firmware and future use of GPS and RTH features. Battery is a Turnigy Nanotech 3S 2200.Second Flight of my CTH Albatross on MauiOhmEye2013-12-21 | This time I have the Naze32 flight controller running Baseflight in passthrough mode, so I'm fairly sure the oscillations are not caused by the control surfaces waggling like it was on the maiden flight. So now I think I have center of gravity off, perhaps left/right, and will adjust it more carefully next time. I mounted the 808 cam on the wing this time, mainly to balance the wing now that I have a DIY UHF turnstile antenna taped under the wing. I used my DIY Moxon antenna on the radio, the control link worked great although I didn't do any real range test. The OpenLRSng telemetry was on and I heard virtually no lost packet beeps.
I switched to a Turnigy 2822 1450kv motor with 7x6 prop and it was much quieter and more thrust at lower throttle than on the maiden flight, so happy with that. Other than the oscillations/wagging the flight was going fine until I hit a palm tree! The fuselage broke, snapped the foam at the rear of the wing, so that was it for the day. I expect to repair the damage with glue and maybe some extreme tape.Maiden Flight of my CTH Albatross on MauiOhmEye2013-11-17 | This is the maiden flight of my Albatross 3-channel plane, an EPP foam kit by Crash Test Hobby. I'm testing an Acro Naze32 flight controller running a very recent build of Baseflight using the Airplane mixer. The radio system is OrangeRX hardware running OpenLRSng.
There is no passthrough mode in Baseflight, so the gyro is used even when not in an autolevel mode, and I left all PID rates set at defaults which are more for multirotors. This results in quite a bit of oscillation under some conditions, and the whole point of this plane is to test the firmware and learn how I want to utilize and tune it. Once I get things more to my liking I plan to add a video transmitter and OSD and begin FPV flight tests.
There's a lot of jello on this video, sorry about that! I haven''t done anything yet for anti-vibration other than a basic balancing of the prop. The camera mount was just taped to the nose. Plus, this was literally the first time I have flown a RC plane in over 20 years, I've been flying multirotors lately but want to start flying fixed wings as well.RepRap MendelMax 2.0 3D Printer Printed Parts ProductionOhmEye2013-10-20 | Printing components for the MakersTookWorks MendelMax 2.0 3D printer.OhMid Q450 Quadcopter Prototype Flips and CrashOhmEye2013-09-21 | The end of the second tuning flight of my OhMid Q450 prototype. I spent most of the flight time tuning then started learning and practicing flips, most were far from the camera because I wanted a lot of distance and height, so this is just a short clip of a couple flips at the end before I managed to crash and pop some zipties and battery loose. :) Still extreme noobishness but I'm learning more each time.OhMini iV Quadcopter Prototype PID Tuning FlightsOhmEye2013-08-23 | This is me doing the first flight tests of my OhMini iV Quadcopter and some PID fine tuning to experiment with the flight characteristics. The OhMini iV is a single-piece inverted-V tail frame 3D printed on my MendelMax 2 3D printer. Some pics of the design are at http://smu.gs/1ajpTlp and it uses the same BoM as my OhMini H-Quad which is detailed at http://www.ohmeye.com/2013/ohmini-quadcopter-bill-of-materials-details
This prototype has aft motors tilted at 30 degrees and is using a MultiWii Lite flight controller board running 2.2.1 firmware with a custom mix based on the Y4 config. My intention for doing an iV tail was to increase yaw rate, but so far the yaw rate on this prototype is slower than my OhMini H-Quad! I don't think I can improve it any further with PID tuning and will need to experiment with tuning the motor mixing in the firmware.
I was doing the PID tuning in the field using a Bluetooth link between an android app on my phone and the flight controller. Changing the motor mixing ratios requires modifying the firmware source code and reflashing.Quadcopter Test Flight CrashOhmEye2013-08-09 | I get caught when the tradewinds come up shortly into a first test flight for some new d2822-1450 motors on a new MultiWii SE board. The frame was just helpd together with zipties and absorbed the damage so components need replacement, but the wind canceled the flights for the rest of the day.Quadcopter Practice on MauiOhmEye2013-08-08 | Flying my OhMini H-Quad on South Maui. This time I rigged a temporary mount for the 808#16 cam for onboard video and also ran my Mobius cam on my hat. The wind was gentle and the trees mostly behaved. :) For info on this DIY mini quad, see http://www.ohmeye.com/2013/ohmini-quadcopter-bill-of-materials-detailsQuadcopter: Nephews First FlightOhmEye2013-08-03 | My nephew is visiting and I handed him the controls to my mini H-Quad with a fresh battery. His first time flying a multirotor, and he did really well! His flight time with a single 2s 1300 battery was 19 minutes, I really love this little quad!OhMini H-Quadcopter First FlightOhmEye2013-07-31 | I fly my mini H-Quad for the first time, in moderate wind at noon which is not ideal but I was impatient. :) Pics and files for the 3D printed frame are at http://smu.gs/1660C8G. The frame weighs 33g and total flying weight with 1200mAH battery is 216g. It is very quick and fun to fly, I wanted to keep going for another 20 minutes but crashed into dirt and had to leave to clean the motors. The frame seemed really durable and I'm quite happy with the results!Quadcopter Fourth FlightsOhmEye2013-07-24 | Same field, same OhMini Quad design, now using OpenLRS UHF radio and practicing more LoS flying. I'm starting to feel more in control now and able to stay in the air easily. The only crash this time out was trying a flip in MultiWii Horizon mode, I didn't follow through or handle throttle well so didn't recover. I spent the rest of the time in stable mode to see how using 3-blade props compares to the 2-blade I've been flying so far. Flight time was about 30% less but part of that is likely because I stayed in the air more and used more throttle. I'm still testing mounts to eliminate jello effect, even with props balanced as well as I can get them the jello happens, but I think it's much reduced in some cases now so I think I'm on the right track. I also had more oscillations this time so need to learn more about tuning PID values properly.
OhMini 3D Printed Quadcopter Frame: http://smu.gs/12UcRBvQuadcopter Third FlightsOhmEye2013-07-15 | My third session flying the OhMini, still trying to eliminate the jello effect and think I am on to something but will need to try some more tests. Got some more altitude again, but eventually crashed bad enough to break my first prop.Quadcopter Second FlightsOhmEye2013-07-13 | My second time flying anything outdoors in over 20 years and I'm slowly getting better. I got a bit of altitude this time and practiced trying to achieve more time in the air than on the ground. Battery flight time is about 10 minutes, not great but not terrible. I still haven't balanced the props yet and the video has major jello effect but I think it's better than nothing. The quad I'm flying here is my own design shown at http://smu.gs/12UcRBv and is based on Diametric's BoM at docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AmDQJy-q2RCHdHkwNkF5bklFR2dmN1M4SFJzdkllT2c#gid=0Quadcopter First FlightsOhmEye2013-07-09 | My first time flying any outdoor RC aircraft in over 20 years, and my first time flying a quadcopter. Extreme noobishness warning! :) This is all the good bad and ugly captured from an 808#16 onboard camera with my OhMini Quadcopter as I take my first try at flying and learning how all the equipment works. The vibration causes pretty strong jello effect in the video, I need to work on that too.

I didn't do prior extruder and hotend calibration because I am using the MakerGear hotend and Phidgets motor that I am familiar with. The electronics are standard RAMPS1.4 running Marlin with a 24V PSU. This alpha test is part of a shakedown process to finalize beta and release hardware, and we did turn up an issue that limits print speed so the axis was changed for the beta test. The X axis in this video only existed on the alpha version and does not represent the current design. I can print PLA on bare glass for many objects, but for ones that are prone to lifting from the glass I use a coating of PVA glue which completely eliminates any first layer adhesion problems for me. I use a 1:10 dilute solution of PVA glue and water applied to the heated glass so the water evaporates quickly and I can control the thickness of the coating I apply. I can usually go for several prints without reapplying, depending on what I print. I usually set the bed temperature to between 50C and 60C for the entire PLA print and use fans on the nozzle and also across the build area.More Timelapse with Reprap MendelMaxOhmEye2012-12-21 | A third test, this time with no flash and better lighting.
