In this episode, Ash makes it out of Viridian Forest and heads toward Pewter City. He meets a man named Flint who sells rocks and scoffs at the idea of Ash defeating Brock. Brock heals his Pokémon at the Center and then heads off to challenge Brock, but his Pikachu is defeated. Ash encounters Flint again at a hydro plant and he gives him a Light Ball to increase Pikachu's power. Ash challenges Flint again and is able to squeak out a narrow victory to earn himself the Boulderbadge. He then goes to leave Pewter City, having claimed his first badge.
