To work sheep or other livestock effectively, your dog should be one of the "gathering" breeds - meaning it should be capable of going out wide around a bunch of animals and bringing them back to the handler - and much more.

Many people think that because they're good at training dogs for other disciplines, it'll be easy for them to train their dog to work sheep, cattle or other livestock. This is completely untrue.

The small dogs at the beginning and end of the video are not working dogs! The little Chihuahua on Gill's lap is called Eric. The red one on the ground is Alfie, and the white one is Chester. We forgot to mention their names in the video (sorry).

At The Working Sheepdog Website we're pleased to see a lot of interest in our blog, particularly on the days when we take Kay and Carew to gather sheep at Dean Farm.
We wanted to see whether Carew could do the full outrun across two fields to gather the sheep so Gill and I decided to record it to give our readers a better idea of what's happening.
This is just a practice gather really. Carew takes the sheep into the sorting pens, and back out again. You'll see Carew do the full gather of more than fifty sheep.
You'll also see her at work in the sorting pens. One of the sheep briefly thinks about challenging her, but quickly changes her mind. The sheep have learned to respect Carew and in this video you'll see why.
The outrun's very nearly five hundred metres. That's a long way for a dog of Carew's limited experience but she genuinely did this gather unaided - first time.
During sheepdog training, it's sometimes difficult to keep the sheep in a confined space like a training ring - this is why.
No sheep or other animals were harmed during the making of this short video clip, which is intended to illustrate the difficulty some sheepdog trainers face when they try to train an over-zealous dog on sheep. The sheep will often attempt to jump out of the enclosure.
Our dogs love to play when they are not in training for sheep and cattle herding. These are just a few clips showing the dogs running around and playing out in the fields.
The sequel to the hit movie Border Collie Sheepdogs - Off Duty! This new DVD is available worldwide from the Working Sheepdog Website.
Packed with fabulous photography, fabulous dogs, fabulous music, as well as terrific action - including many snow scenes and lots and lots of border collie puppies.
You'll see dog behaviour in this movie that you've never seen before, and there's a great description of real life pack behaviour in dogs.
As well as the border collie sheepdogs, you'll see Lily the Great Dane, Eris the Deerhound Lurcher, Red the Kelpie puppy, Alfie the Chihuahua and Chester the Chihuahua X Pappillon.
This is a chapter from our great children and family DVD: BORDER COLLIE SHEEPDOGS - OFF DUTY!
This is a preview of our brand new 2xDVD sheepdog training program First Steps in Border Collie Sheepdog Training - a training DVD for beginners which shows you how you can start to train a dog for farm, trials or ranch working with the absolute minimum help from other people.
If you are interested in training a dog to work sheep, a smallholder, potential sheepdog trialler, hobby sheep keeper, smallholder, farmer or even a budding sheep rancher this 2xDVD set, clearly explains the natural instinct of the Border Collie Sheepdog and how (with patience, determination and simple preparation) it can easily be programmed to develop into a really useful working dog.
The time honoured (and probably easiest) method of starting a young dog is to use an experienced dog to keep the sheep in the middle of the field. But this method's of no use to beginners who don't have an experienced dog (or access to one), so in First Steps in Border Collie Sheepdog Training the dogs are all trained WITHOUT THE USE OF AN EXPERIENCED DOG.
Border Collie Sheepdogs - Off Duty!
Join the"border collie" herding dogs and cutest pups of Kings Green Farm at work and play in this collection of short clips from our DVD movie.
The DVD is available worldwide through outlets such as eBay and Amazon UK - as well as our website

if you'd like to purchase the full 73+ minute movie (and fabulous slideshow) on (All Regions) DVD at full quality. PAL or NTSC versions available for worldwide viewing.
We have other outlets for the DVD so Google for it if you prefer.
DVD description:
Imagine up to twenty amazing working sheepdogs and crazy border collie pups racing through fields, woods and bridleways, jumping over styles, swimming, digging, exploring, playing together, spending a day by the sea - and Mel (our collie actress) shooting a very funny Sega computer game advert.
Now capture the fast action, crazy, hilarious antics and delightful puppy scenes, with stunning video photography. Set it to 18 powerful, and varied music tracks which fit the scenes of border collies and beautiful border collie puppies.
The result is a unique DVD movie showing dog and pup relaxing together in ways the average pet owner never sees. Border Collie Sheep dogs - Off Duty! is a great gift for all dog lovers and children.
I particularly like the water, waterfalls (Elan Valley) and beautiful views with gulls flying gracefully over the water and of course, the lovely swans - how wonderful are they?
The video was originally made for a club competition and in fact it won - although in this version the music is different and one or two clips have been changed.
Watch the sheepdogs and puppies at work and play - and if you like it, you may like to buy the 70+ minute DVD which we distribute worldwide (NTSC and PAL).
