The numbers stations in this video were some of the most elusive.
Many numbers stations fit a certain criteria which made them easy to classify, even enabling listeners to identify their country of origin.
While some of what you’re about to hear shared characteristics with known stations, there were subtle differences that mean that to this day, they have never been identified.
As if they never existed...

Little is known about the Gongs and Chimes station but it became one of the eeriest numbers stations to hit the shortwave dial.
With the Enigma ID G03, it became known for its famous gongs and chimes preamble signal which was played from a tape, an interesting point that’ll become clear soon.
The gongs and chimes sound made it one of the most terrifying shortwave stations ever heard on the air.

I’ve been closely monitoring the shortwave bands this past couple of weeks for the seemingly endless occurrences of interesting signals emanating from the Russian Federation.
There’s been jamming, music, propaganda and all sorts of unusual signals out there lately so let me give you a run down of October’s shortwave oddities.
The buzzer has been the main target of jamming which you can find out more about here:

Should you buy a discone antenna? Do they work? Are they any good? These are the questions I receive often when it comes to discone antennas.
They're probably the best antenna option for a wide range of frequencies but for specific bands there are better options.
In this instalment we look at a strange military discone as well as some other models and it should help you decide whether or not a discone is for you.

This is a little known story from over 40 years ago which I suspect is one of the first public nods towards the use of numbers stations between the US secret intelligence service and its agents and spies.
In fact I believe this is the second public acknowledgement of numbers stations ever, coming only months after the infamous Geoffrey Prime case of 1982 in the UK which you can find more on in the video linked below.
For those who aren’t aware of numbers stations, they’re an extremely effective and yet to be unbroken form of sending encrypted messages to spies over shortwave radio. There’s a full documentary in the description below.

Shortwave jamming is a topic that’s always intrigued me. Jamming can be defined as the deliberate interference of a radio communications system, with the intent to stop or disrupt, the reception of the information being transmitted by the targeted communications system.
Jammers can be found almost daily if you take the time to scan the shortwave bands. The can be quite elusive with the source not always being clear.
One of the most commonly heard jamming attempts is that of the Firedrake, a Chinese jammer that targets numerous transmissions from different broadcasters pretty much daily.
North Korea also jams the broadcasts of neighbouring countries, and well everyone to stop its population receiving signals that it doesn’t agree with from abroad. Some of these sound terrifying if you’re listening at night in the dark, especially if it pops up when you’ve got the volume turned up.
I’ve made a whole host of videos on things like Firedrake, North Korean jammers and radio in general and a more detailed overview on jamming which you can find in the description below.

A lack of Saturday night plans saw me listening to the dutch WebSDR this evening and it wasn’t long before I saw lots of people talking about new mystery buzzing sounds on the shortwave bands.
Some investigation, and I should add not a lot, I basically followed the frequencies everyone posted, revealed a whole series of new buzzer type signals across the spectrum. 5 to be exact so far.
The Russian buzzer is on 4625 doing its thing but there’s 5 new additions on 4486, 5523, 5710, 7499 and 8853KHz USB.
They’re all virtually identical with what sounds like some sort of data mode underneath and one of them has a different speed than the rest.
Take a listen.
So, what’s going on? What’s brought these 5 new oddities to the airwaves this evening? Let me know your thoughts in the comments below.

Those who use CB radio regularly may have sometimes suffered with numerous channels completely wiped out by the sound of Russian female voices.
I don’t mean specifically on SSB or AM where signals tend to carry further, I’m talking about on the 40 UK FM channels.
Listening round the dial at certain times of the day, especially this time of year as the winter propagation approaches will reveal numerous channels, and in some unfortunate cases, all of them, in use by strong, high powered signals carrying female voices.
This type of interference has become more prevalent in the last 20 years since the late 1990’s to early 2000’s.
Affectionately referred to in the UK as Olga, the majority of these voices emanate from the Russian Federation but what are they? Who is Olga? And why does she cause havoc to CB operators.
Olga is the name assigned by British CB radio operators as a collective term for the hundreds of Russian, mostly female taxi dispatchers heard on the air.
Olga can be heard all over Europe on the 12, 11 and 10 meter band. These signals can carry many hundreds of kilometres.
These Russian taxi companies can be a source of major interference problems. The Russian radio frequency service does receive complaints but doesn’t appear to act in any major form.

Recently, a viewer emailed me with a shortwave mystery which I thought I’d investigate and try to get to the bottom of.
John sent me an email of some great recollections from heyday of shortwave monitoring. He says, there was also the “footsteps” station which was always very strong here in the Washington D.C. area.
It wasn’t as loud in South Carolina however. The sound of the signal was like that of a man on a flight of stairs. He said a man because the sound had a different “cadence” than that of a woman.
He said he never heard the transmissions start but did hear it end occasionally. He also said there was a very military sounding male voice giving numbers and phonetic letters in four letter and number groups.
John heard this signal in the 1960’s and 1970’s.
There isn’t a lot to work with here but after some research and speaking to a friend of mine Simon Mason who’s a well known name in numbers stations circles, I might just have the answer.

Back in May I published a video on a story that broke back in 2013 on The Kernel in which a phone number was made public that had apparently been set up in place of the famous Lincolnshire Poacher numbers station.
An anonymous source claimed that the Lincolnshire Poacher lived on as a secret telephone number for MI6 agents to receive encoded messages in the Middle East.
Known only as Mr Bland, the informant claimed that after the Lincolnshire Poacher ceased operations in 2008, it was moved to a UK telephone number. Mr Bland even provided the telephone number.
The Kernel called the number and was met with a mysterious version of the Lincolnshire Poacher.
The following day after numerous calls to the number, the Lincolnshire Poacher message system had been taken down. Instead of hearing the numbers station, callers were relayed a different message.
The Kernel, along with several readers, then received a text message from a different number informing them that the “Lincolnshire Poacher” telephone number was restricted and requesting that they don’t call it again.
When the Kernel tried to call the new number that the text message was sent from, they were told that the number wasn’t recognised.

The Yosemite Sam shortwave radio incident has gone down in history as one of the most mysterious transmissions ever.
The famous signal transmitted a data burst followed by the distinctive voice of Yosemite sam at reasonably high power levels across the New Mexico desert and listeners soon picked it up.
Originally thought to be some sort of numbers station or secret government project, Yosemite Same came on the air numerous times before it disappeared for good.
Two radio hams located its transmission location back in 2004 but today I bring you the full story behind this mysterious event, putting the incident to bed once and for all.

Medium and Long Wave radio are dying out across the UK. In today's instalment we visit the mammoth Droitwich Transmitting Station in the West Midlands for a closer look.
Radio 4 transmits a half million watt or 500kw signal from here on a wire antenna reaching most of the UK.
With the closure of more and more radio stations, how long does Droitwich have left until its services are slowly switched off as part of the AM radio phase out.

I visited the Manchester Hip Hop Archive recently to look at a seriously cool pirate radio transmitter.
I also got a real taste of the hip hop scene including the fashion, most of which I wish I owned today, an amazing collection of tapes which puts mine to shame.
Photos and ephemera from the bands, clubs and venues and events from the day, the tech I grew up with and wish I still owned.
And lastly, an original burner phone with f* Ofcom on the side, a real pirate radio studio link transmitter with matching microwave horn, a book of shout out numbers and the station schedule, and of course, the main event… the pirate radio transmitter from Manchester 106FM.
You need to visit, it’s amazing.

This is no ordinary mobile phone, this phone was designed to save your life or at least get you out of a sticky situation.
What we have here is the The AA Callsafe mobile carphone, made by NovAtel Communications Ltd. It’s based around the NVT1320 novotel bag phone but this was made with some differences.
It was offered by the UK's Automobile Association or (AA), the vehicle breakdown and rescue service from 1992.
The phone, which came with a power pack that could be plugged into a car's cigarette charger port, was intended as an emergency phone only to be kept in the car.
It only had two functions and two dialling buttons. 1 which was pressed three times to connect to the AA, and 9 which was pressed three times to connect to the emergency services.

Trains all over Poland have been mysteriously slamming on the brakes, with Putin’s voice heard on the drivers’ radios—backed with the Russian national anthem.
On August 25 and 26, more than 20 polish trains carrying both freight and passengers were brought to a halt across the rail network through what Polish media described as a “cyberattack.”
It appears that simple radio commands were sent to the trains that were targeted.
Because the trains use a radio system that lacks encryption or authentication for those commands, anyone with as little as a $30 of off-the-shelf radio can apparently broadcast these commands to Polish trains.
