With the slang of today leaving much to be desired in the realm of sophistication and potency, one must dive into the history books to study the wonderful words of times past! When people today imagine how someone from the 18th century spoke, they tend to imagine a sophisticated and fanciful construction of words, all pieced together masterfully like a work of art. However the reason one would be drawn to this conclusion is actually an example of survivorship bias. Because people today tend to only be familiar with the greatest, most influential, and most classic pieces of literature and writings from the 18th century, we tend to come to the conclusion that everyone around that time must have spoken in a similar way to the writings of the American Declaration of Independence or Gulliver's Travels. But if you were willing to sit down and take the time to study the letters and notes from common folk around this time (or words recorded by observers who are, themselves, literate), you'd find a similar frequency of slang and jargon just like we use today! In this video, I explore what the environment of slang, idioms, and jargon looked like in 18th century England, used by the most wretched and cretinous members of society! It's the idea of pure unadulterated freedom, living free from the shackles of responsibility, regulation, and reality. On a lone vessel dancing along the waves of a vast ocean, the world is truly your oyster, and the possibilities are endless! This swashbuckling fantasy has been fueled time and time again by classics like Pirates of the Caribbean in the early 2000s, Treasure Island in the late 1800s, and A General History of the Pyrates in the early 1700s. So considering how impactful the pirate genre has been on the greater populace, it might come as a shock to learn that our understanding of real pirate history is relatively meager. That last listed classic, A General History of the Pyrates by Captain Charles Johnson, remains one of our most primary sources for pirate history during the Golden Age, a novel which we know to have exaggerated and stretched the truth for sensational effect. While unfortunate, it does make sense that accurate recordings of the true history of piracy are scarce given the criminal and elusive nature of pirates themselves. One isn't really an efficient criminal by making their personal information as known as possible. Combine that with the fact that most pirates came from poverty and low social status, and the fact that many primary court documents have been lost to time, it makes sense that this history can be hard to accurately map and result in much speculation. In this video, much speculation must be made to connect the dots we have about Stede Bonnet's life for example. Naturally, this can lead to inaccurate assumptions, so with that in mind I tried my best to choose language carefully when telling this story. Take note of the numerous sentences initiated with, "It's believed" for some insight into when speculations are made. The illusiveness of pirate history feeds into the fantasy. After all, these were criminals, and if we could go back in time and ask them, we'd find many of them wouldn't choose this way of life if given the choice. The story of piracy is the story of class struggle, with rare exceptions like Bonnet aside, the lowest rungs of society were the ones who populated the pirate ranks. Poor sailors who lost their livelihood, impressment victims seeking freedom, privateers losing their state-backed support, and those with nowhere to turn but the sea were the ones who became pirates. It's a position born out of struggle and poverty, the same struggle that can be seen with the Somali pirates in the modern day. In essence, they are no different than the glorified pirates of the Caribbean: disadvantaged victims of society merely doing what they can to survive. Works Consulted / Read More: (Will add later)

Taken at face value, one might hear that sentence and imagine the Cold War took the combatants by surprise, how could friends so quickly become enemies, after all? But the great irony was that not only was the Cold War not a surprise, but both sides knew it was coming. Even when they had been allies. The Cold War was as pure of a war of ideologies as one could get, not a war of armies and weapons, but one of influence and power. The United States sought to align the world with their capitalist economic model while the Soviets put their effort into reinforcing the communist model, this clash of economic ideologies led to a lot of tension, amplified by the fact that if one side was pushed too hard, nukes would follow. That possibility made this war one of the scariest, even though no shots were fired. Scholars estimate the first Egyptian myths came to be somewhere around 3100–2686 B.C, around the same time as the origins of human civilization itself. These myths help historians and anthropologists understand the Egyptians as a people, as through the analysis of the gods and their stories, they shed light on their principles and values. Perhaps the most fascinating part to me about Egyptian Mythology, is that while it existed and was worshipped for over 3,000 years, it remained relatively unchanged throughout that time. One would expect stories being told over multiple millennia to eventually be indistinguishable at the end from what it was in the beginning, but it truly is a testament to the deeply traditional values of the Egyptian people that, while changes were made in the mythos, they weren't as drastic as one would expect. Which makes it even more hilarious when you learn about stories such as Akhenaten's attempt to convert Egypt into a monotheistic civilization through the sole worship of Aten, completely throwing thousands of years of tradition out the window. Originating from a dispute over Spiny Lobster fishing rights, this disagreement highlighted the lack of adequate international agreements on the territorial waters and fishing rights of a nation as the events took place two decades before the signing of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. In the 1960's, French fishing vessels traveled to the Brazilian coast to harvest lobster, igniting an international debate on the legality of this which hinged on the answer to a single question: can a lobster be considered a fish? Brazil argued that because lobster crawl along the ocean floor, they are considered an economic resource apart of their continental shelf. The French, for their part, argued that lobsters "swim" as they hop along the ocean floor, making them essentially a fish that can be caught by any country's vessel. The eventual peaceful resolution of this conflict led to the extension of Brazil's territorial waters to a 200-nautical-mile zone, setting the basis for exclusive economic zones of the same length that would come in the following decades.

While certainly not always dangerous, when the practice was taken to the extremes (aka tight lacing), permanent ribcage and organ deformation could occur (which is the picture I showed in the video). It's actually not misleading at all. All I did was a balance of probability. If you are older than the life expectancy of one group, then you would statistically be more likely to be dead at that point in time than you would for the other group with a higher life expectancy. It's basic statistics. Infants are still a part of the equation and you have to account for them because if you were to roll the dice to see if you'd be alive at the age of 26 for example, infant mortalities would affect that outcome. Also: Some people are mishearing my line at 6:18, I'm not saying mummies had brains, the line was, "oh my god, look, he's got no brain, that's crazy."

The last ditch effort for Russian naval superiority in the Russo-Japanese war required a voyage never before taken by a coal-powered fleet. To help matters, the fleet was crewed by conscripted peasants who had little to no experience or education when it came to naval operation. Over the 18,000 mile journey, the fleet attacked civilian vessels from multiple global powers, shot at their own ships, killed fellow sailors with negligence of safety standards, destroyed city's communication grids, and so much more.
