Save 6 Music ads from 2010 Tom Robinson 2022-12-17 | These ads appeared on the escalators at Oxford Circus station in the weeks ahead of the BBC Trust meeting to decide 6 Music's fate in May 2010. Trust member would have had to pass these to get to Broadcasting House. The ads must have been paid for by a major fan of the station, but nobody ever found out who...Backstory....In February 2010, in anticipation of a review by the BBC Trust, newspaper reports suggested 6 Music might be axed. The review stopped short of recommending closure but noted that only one in five UK residents were aware the station existed, and that it lacked presenters with credibility as music experts. The Times claimed that Mark Thompson, Director General of the BBC, proposed closure as part of a bid to scale back BBC operations and allow commercial rivals more room. A high-profile campaign to oppose closure of the station attracted media attention and led to "#SaveBBC6Music" quickly becoming a trending topic on Twitter. A leading voice in the campaign was Jarvis Cocker, the lead singer for the British band Pulp who presented his own show on BBC 6 Music, Jarvis Cocker's Sunday Service. A Facebook group set up to oppose the proposed closure gained nearly 180,000 members. A campaign was launched to get the song "Joy Division Oven Gloves" by Half Man Half Biscuit to No. 6 in the UK Singles Chart on 12 April 2010 it entered the Singles Chart that week at No. 56 and the Independent Singles Chart at No. 3.Five months after rumours of closure first emerged, the BBC Trust announced that it was not convinced by the BBC Executive's plans and that the station would not be closed. In February 2010, 6 Music was reported as showing growth in its audience, winning an audience of 695,000 listeners over the first quarter, up 12.3% year-on-year. Following the proposal to close the station, online listening figures rose significantly. The number of weekly unique online listeners rose to an average of 133,653 in March 2010, up 50 per cent on the previous March. Tom Robinson solo benefit concert in Oxford, June 2001 Tom Robinson 2021-05-07 | In 2001 my friend Andy Barnett was in declining health and on 30 June that year I played a benefit concert for him at All Saints Convent which happened to stand opposite his home in St Mary's Road, Oxford. It was a joint effort: Andy arranged the gig with SIster Margaret (who we see at the start of the footage) and badgered a group of friends and well-wishers to come along to it. He also shot the performance on his quite expensive - but quite old - home video camera.For my part I brought the music equipment and the songs, badgered the audience to make a donation when leaving the premises, and finished the show with an emotional version of "Old Friend".Andy lived on for a further two years before succumbing to cancer in an Oxford hopsice in March 2003. Only duplicated VHS copies survive - so the picture and sound quality are quite ropey but another of Andy's friends Ewan Saum has kindly conveted his own VHS copy to this digital version for YouTube...Tom Robinson

I spent a huge chunk of Mothers Day yesterday trying to find words that would be broadcastable this morning. Like many people I'm sicked by the murder of Sarah Everard and heartbroken for her devastated family and friends. Saturday's Guardian headline said: "Police curb vigils as anger grows over women's safety". We're not angry about women's safety. We're angry about men violating and threatening women. We're angry because every murder heightens our own fear. We're angry that our choice of clothes can become someone's excuse to rape. We're angry that we feel nervous of cars that slow down near us. Angry that we have to calculate whether we are safe to walk through the local park or go the long way round. Now if you think that I'm overreacting and silly, maybe it hasn't happened to you. Sorry - of course I've learned not to let these things rule me - I'm amazed at myself crying at the moment, but these things still cross my mind all the time. Do men have to think about these things? Probably, if they've been assaulted. But they won't tell because it feels shameful and stupid. Women, we live with this because we're women. We get blamed for what we wear, we're blamed for where we go - and what we do. Shamed for being afraid and we're shamed for blaming men. And I know it's not all men. The best men learn to own their feelings - they don't project onto women as their scapegoats. The worst seek control and dominance over anyone they deem inferior - male or female - physically or otherwise. I'm haunted by the image of a woman - at a protest against violence against women - held on the ground, handcuffed. That image will linger for a long time.Can we learn new ways? Ways that don't silence, or control, or marginalise women - or the poor - or minorities?"
THE TOM ROBINSON SHOW ON 6 MUSIC TO END IN MARCH 2021 Tom Robinson 2021-03-15 | BBC Radio 6 Music marked its 19th birthday last week and I'm proud that its airwaves have included a Tom Robinson Show from day one. I'm also proud of fighting to save the station from closure in 2010. I'm most proud of my show's specialist support in recent years for UK folk music, for other queer songwriters - and for unknown BBC Introducing artists - with sessions and extended interviews. However new 6 Music schedules are being announced this week, and I've been told the Tom Robinson Show will be coming to an end. Nothing lasts forever, and 19 years is a pretty good innings in the world of radio. I don't know who'll be replacing me - but a more diverse range of broadcasting talent on BBC 6 Music can ony be a good thing. Even though there'll be no more inisterviews and sessions I'lll still be hosting NowPlaying every Sunday, and showcasing 60 minutes of new tunes each week on the BBC Introducing Mixtape. So please join me for a farewell edition of the Tom Robinson Show this Saturday (March 20th). I'll then return one last time on March 27th as part of the #6MusicFestival with a showcase of live highlights from previous years.

TOM ROBINSON BAND - The Summer Of 21 Tom Robinson 2020-07-20 | An updated version of "The Winter of 79" recorded remotely by members of the current Tom Robinson Band during June 2020, following the cancellation of our UK tour in May. Our backline tech Mark Dyde had just been discharged from hospital following a health crisis and Lee Forsyth Griffiths suggested we all re-record Mark's favourite song as as a way of sending him love and moral support. Jim Simmons helped update the lyrics then co-ordinated the remote sessions - recorded separately by Lee, Adam Phillips (guitar), Andy Treacey (drums), Jim (keys) and myself on bass and vocals. Andy did this mix in his home studio, and I assembled this video from still photos shot by Mark at The 100 Club, London (in 2017). It's also the name of a Violin Sonata played by Joachim, accompanied by Clara Schumann, that resulted from a collaboration between the composer Robert Schumann and two of his pupils, Johannes Brahms and Albert Dietrich.On the 200th anniversary of Schumann's birth, Tom Robinson examines the complex relationships between these romantic artists through the prism of this piece of music. Schumann's passionate love for his wife Clara is matched only by Brahms' devotion to her during and following Schumann's decline into mental illness.Brahms was also a close champion of Joachim, until the violinist's divorce, when they fell out over the composer's support for Joachims' wife. RAPHAEL DOYLE - Well All Get Together Again Tom Robinson 2016-09-21 | In 1969 fifteen year old singer Raphael Doyle left his native County Antrim for England - where he was discovered by blues legend Alexis Korner, formed a teenage musical partnership with Tom Robinson and Hereward Kaye - and the trio had their first album produced by Ray Davies of The Kinks. In early 2016, after four eventful decades - and what Raphael describes as “a messy life” - he was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease. He quickly began work recording the album he'd always dreamed of making in collaboration with his son Louis Doyle (Slides, The Spare Room) and award-winning producer Gerry Diver - with Tom Robinson in the role of executive producer. Named after a poem by Seamus Heaney ["When all the others were away at Mass"] Never Closer was released by Cooking Vinyl on 27 January 2017 - and can be heard in full at http://raphaeldoyle.bandcamp.com Two months after celebrating his 65th birthday with family and friends at home in Saltburn, Raphael passed away quietly in his sleep at Teesside Hospice in the early hours of Friday 30 March 2018. Raphael Doyles new album project Tom Robinson 2016-09-06 | In early 70s London the folk clubs were buzzing. Raphael Doyle formed a trio with songwriting partner Tom Robinson and a one-man Northern powerhouse called Hereward Kaye. With a residency at the Troubadour coffee house in Earls Court they became known as Café Society - beating Woody Allen to the title by more than four decades. Gravel-voiced, cheroot-smoking, Austro-Greek blues legend Alexis Korner was the band's mentor. Jamming alongside his tambourine-flailing protégé at the Troubadour one evening Alexis declared "Raphael swings like a pig". He was succeeded on stage that night by watermelon man Ray Davies, who'd dropped in to sign the boys to his new label Konk Records.The sixties in Northern Ireland had seen a heady mix of Dylan-inspired folk colliding with the raw R&B intensity of Van Morrison and Them. A young Raphael would press his ear to the plate glass window of a beachside club in County Antrim whenever Belfast bands came to play. As difficult teen years arrived Raphael's life went off the rails. Eventually he fled to England and ended up in Kent at the Finchden Manor community, where at age 15 he began a lifelong friendship with Tom Robinson. By now he was already belting out blues and folk with ferocious intensity and writing copious song lyricis and poetry.After two albums for Konk, Café Society split up. Painfully short on confidence and increasingly dependent on drink, Raphael's work became hit and miss. By age 19 he had already met and married Rose and the pair have journeyed together ever since through times of turbulence, but also of tremendous blessing, with four much-loved children.His wandering years included touring Europe with Ignatz; recording gospel rock with Giant Killer and countless electric blues gigs with guitarist Paul Davey, establishing a strong following across South London. His Pied Piper storytelling and songs in schools took kids and adults alike to other worlds - while through all the wild, tempestuous times, family life continued to provide an emotional anchor.In time, Raphael's son Louis Doyle made his own mark on the London scene as frontman with indie bands Slides and The Spare Room. After discovering his father's archive of unreleased songs, Louis dreamed of someday making a brand new Raphael Doyle album that would do proper justice to his dad's musical gifts.And then in 2016 Raphael got a diagnosis of terminal illness. Making the record became a matter of urgency. Raphael and Louis teamed up with Tom Robinson and producer Gerry Diver to conceive the album Never Closer. The first and most urgent goal was to get Raphael's vocals for the whole album safely recorded. In Summer 2016 Louis and Raphael captured 18 master vocal tracks with Gerry Diver at his South London studio in just four days. The pair then went to Miloco studios with engineer Daniel Moyler to work up band arrangements for many of the songs - including contributions from Tom and Hereward.Never Closer follows the story of a messy life. There is darkness and there is recovery. There is pain and there is love. And at end of the record Raphael powerfully, quietly and gladly concludes that it is all - definitely - worth it.There is now a race against Raphael's declining health to get the remaining tracks finished, mixed, mastered and marketed in time for his 64th birthday on January 6th. The cast includes faces familiar to anyone who saw a TR tour in the 90s - such as tour manager Glynn Wood, TV Smith, bassist Winston Blissett and sax player Mark Ramsden.
