This laid back tune takes inspiration from a well known ancient Chinese work of drama, or one could say a Cdrama conceived waaay back in the 1300s that goes by the name "Romance of the Western Chamber".
For one... it appears that not much has changed in people's preferences in romantic dramas even till this day (haha!) if we compare the plots of this work of romantic fiction and the ones that we watch on TV now. If curiosity has got the better of you, go ahead and look up the plot of this ancient Cdrama, you might just be both surprised and not surprised at the same time.

In the years roughly 900s-1300s of Song Dynasty ancient China, there lived a talented man whom aside from being a respected military commander, was able to write for song and poetry. "Azure Jade Vessel · The Lantern Fair" takes inspiration from one of his most famous pieces of the same name. The piece of poem depicts a joyful, crowd-filled evening of a festival lined with lanterns throughout the streets, expensive carriages leaving a trail of perfumed fragrance, and adorned ladies of class giggling among themselves. All of these meant naught to the author apparently, as we're quickly shown that he was in fact looking for someone specific in a sea of people, only to find said person in a dimly lit part of the street.
While seemingly a romantic poem on the surface, It is said that the poem is a lamentation that actual people of talent are often neglected and left in the dark while the showy and superficial folk run amok in his beloved country.

The story goes that a long time ago, a small time performing artist was hired to perform at a wedding one day, only to discover that the groom of the wedding was in fact the artist's lover who promised her their hand in marriage once he completes his imperial exams. News spread fast of who attained first place in the imperial exams, but what she didn't know was him coming back with a broken promise. Heartbroken, she fulfilled her duty anyway and sang for the wedding audience; The first half of her joy in meeting him again after what seemed like an eternity apart, and other half of her heart broken by an unkept promised.

During the Three Kingdoms period of ancient China as the Han Dynasty neared its end, two besties from the Kingdom of Wu came to be and they were known as Sun Ce the inheritor of his father's Kingdom, and Zhou Yu the military genius and his second in command. An unfortunate event cut their time short after Sun Ce's life came to a resolution at young age of 26. But just as resolute was his bestie Zhou Yu, whom despite his great loss, dauntlessly heaved the kingdom into an equal power with their rival two kingdoms for the next decade. And for exactly a decade Zhou Yu held on resolutely, until his untimely death at a ripe 36 years of age.

A tune inspired by one of the most famed female figures of ancient China, Emperor Wu Zetian. It tells of the story of an educated young lady employed into the palace for her academic talents. Through a variety of circumstances and political struggles, she eventually found her way up to the top as the Emperor of Tang Dynasty China, where her talents ushered the ancient kingdom into a golden era of economic momentum.

If I had given this title a more literal translation, it would probably sound like something out of a metaphysics textbook indeed... A term often lost in translation, the word 天地 or literally "Heaven (and) Earth" is more akin to what comes to mind when we say "cosmos". Not an actual translation but it's kind of close. Followed by 緩緩, meaning a "gradual/unhurried" nature of a thing. The song thus depicts the vastness of Heaven and Earth ever moving, calm and unhurried. Regardless of our circumstances at a personal level, our insignificance would appear as nearly nothing in the eyes of nature's slow and unhurried passage.

YES it appears that this is going to be the video with the longest English title on this channel... I had looked at the original Chinese title and thought long and hard; how the heck do I translate this to English and not make it look/sound awkward? ... Basically, I gave up.
So anyway! This cheerful tune derives its inspiration from how some of ancient China's literary artists would get drunk just to have a moment of delight or inspiration, but a popular thought that accompanied this practice was that great artists also easily find joy in the art itself, why should they betray their own art simply for a drink or two? In short, why would anyone buy wine with money from their poetry fees? Do you perhaps agree with this statement?

"Yilan Love Story" is a title that was easily confused by many Chinese listeners as the word "Yilan" happen to resemble a person's name. In fact, it is the name of a place in the northeastern part of China, to which the music seem to take after in style! Many music styles of northern China tend to lean towards brighter tunes in contrast to the south's mellower tone. I hope you enjoy this northern style flute performance!

From an ancient Chinese historical book titled "Zibuyu" 《子不語》or in English, "What the Master Would Not Discuss", various topics of ghastly nature were discussed in great detail of demons, ghosts, and other terrifying legends. This song illustrates a chapter that describes a malignant spirit with origins in Hindu mythology.
The spirit takes on the form of a bird; dark and ominous, often residing in deserted graveyards where large amounts of negative Chi amass from the neglect. They desire nothing more than to bore out the eyes of living people, for what purpose is unknown. In the book, one such example involves a spirit that took the form of a young woman on her way to marry her man, only to attack the couple while they were unaware and took out their eyes before flying away, leaving them to live the rest of their married lives unable to even see each other.
One has to wonder, was this done out of spite? Why would it go through the trouble of coming up with a ruse to attack a newly wed couple for their eyes, instead of simply anyone else it could have preyed on instead?

The Lunar New Year is just around the corner! Coming up on the 12th of February this year, many people would be soon celebrating the holiday festive season, which brings us to a bit of story about this song's title.
Once again the title is awfully difficult to translate... as is usually the case for Chinese. The title in question is made up of 5 individual names of some of the more common types of (brush)strokes when writing Chinese characters, and to name them each in English for a song title would've been quite ridiculous... so that explains the improvised title "Brushstrokes Ensemble".
What does that got to do with the Lunar New Year? Long story short, in ancient China and even sometimes today, a type of festival game involves a game host presenting riddles based on how specific Chinese words are written, and if a person guesses correctly they win prizes. It often requires the player to be highly knowledgeable in the variety of different characters and brushstrokes to do well in such a game! Too bad for the illiterate folk.

"White Dew" is a part of a phrase from one of the earliest recorded poems from the Classic of Poetry, or sometimes also called Book of Songs, dating as far back as the 11th Century BC. A popular song among the Chinese for its simplistic and sentimental themes that still apply to this day. The poem depicts an almost dreamlike imagery, recounting the events of an unspecified character's approach to a lake surrounded by greenery glittering with dew. In the midst, our character finds his/her love across the water, alas without any easy means to draw closer.
The ambiguous nature of the song leave us without knowing who our character is, man or woman, or if what was seen was even real. Some even suggest that the vision is an illusion derived from our character's mental state and the reflections of the water, as throughout various sections of the song it was mentioned several attempts to struggle against the currents only to find "it" somewhere else.
In the end, we are left with our character still looking despite their efforts. What about you, what do you make of this?

A popular phrase was once coined by a famous literary artist in ancient China, originally lamenting his aging mind and body being akin to that of an old mountain's appearance. The saying as part of a poem was well liked by many, and was soon picked up by the common folk, often seeing old friends say it to one another, as if two old mountains assuring each other of their age-old friendship, a sign of a strong bond!

This is one of those times where the Chinese track title doesn't really translate to the English one all that well, and in this case they both kind of mean different things to boot. I actually found the English title already widely used for this track, so with respect to the name giver I won't change it but for the sake of clarification!: The Chinese track title is an allusion to a part of a Chinese Zen saying that goes "pointing straight to the heart", which comes from the Zen Buddhism believe that our hearts are the seat of the Zen nature, so to find Zen/Buddha we need simply to look inside ourselves. The Chinese track title makes no indication of actually going to the moon, but rather of the motion of pointing towards it. Perhaps besides the allusion to Zen, the implication is also of the heart being pure and bright as the moon. Maybe someone can think of a better English title for this?

Before paper was invented as a writing material, the ancient Chinese used bamboo that were cut into slices and bound together to form what we call a "bamboo scroll" today. The Chinese character 箋 in the title of this song is the name of the pieces of bamboo used for this purpose. Soon after paper was invented, various written stuff such as official documents presented to the Emperor were still called by their old name "箋", and retained its definition as "letters" among common folk despite already using paper as a better alternative.

The literary artists of ancient China have often associated autumn with a sense of wistful quietude, where the myriad things begin to whither. Those swiftly falling leaves remind them of their own remaining course, inspiring a meditative period of contemplation and pensive creativity. One such example comes from a Ming Dynasty writer known for his rather uneventful life, hence he wrote:
柴米油鹽醬醋茶 Wood, rice, oil, salt, soy, vinegar, and tea
Every house has them except me
Bland were the years and my life is naught
Yet I relish the plum's blossom in the bamboo court

Here is a Cantonese vocalized version of "Misty Drizzles, Drifting Boat" featuring some variations from the original Mandarin version! Once again the thought of translating the lyrics went through my head, and I even have a completed document of the translation in English! However it was awfully difficult to transcribe this particular literary style of Chinese into English, often fluctuating between translation of the intent, mood, and/or allusions in each phrase while not sacrificing the finer articulation between both languages... AND maintaining a decent number of syllables in the process! In the aftermath I reviewed my own translation... let out a big, long sigh and just wrapped it up without the embarrassing mess. If enough people still want to see it anyway, maybe I'll include it in the video as subtitles!

"戲子多秋,可憐一處情深舊。
The many autumns of an artiste, such a tragedy of their remnant sentiments."
Unlike the celebrities of today, artistes of the performing world in ancient times carry on their backs countless untold stories of pain and sorrow. Singers and other artistes alike, besides offering their performing talents, often had to sell themselves to the wealthier folk like an escort. They sing their tearful tune by day, and entertain their buyers by night, like a little bird in their adorned cage. As quick as autumns come and go, where the myriad things wilt and wither, so do the artistes, their sentiments. A tragic irony that artistes as the most passionate people we know are fated to live a life of unspoken sorrows, as they sing until they're never heard from again, leaving nothing but their remnant sentiments.

"Vestments of Cathay" or in simpler terms the traditional Chinese clothing, also known as a "Hanfu (漢服)", the mostly unchanging traditional garments of Chinese folk for several millennia that influenced the sinosphere for a similar length of time, was almost gone for good around the 1600s. Ming Dynasty China was at that point in a state of decline that led to their ultimate downfall against a Manchurian invasion, whom for the next several hundred years made it illegal to wear Chinese clothes, and are only allowed to don Manchurian garments unless they're a Buddhist monk or a Daoist priest! What we often label today as the Chinese dress (sometimes qipao or cheongsam) is a descendant and highly altered version of the Manchurian dress. A bit of food for thought!

A piece inspired by a beautiful and historical telling of a devoted Emperor and his consort Yang Yuhuan, that sadly ended in naught
but grief.
For most of their lives, Yang Yuhuan and the Emperor were seen as a loving couple that had a few quarrels here and there, but they always came back loving each other more... no thanks to a rather busy servant of Yang Yuhuan who often finds himself a mediator between their bickering!
However like all empires and their court politics, the presence of power struggles are just as prevalent. Yang Yuhuan's cousin whom the Emperor appointed with lots of promotions was at one point accused by the masses for provoking a rebellion and planning
treason. The people called on the Emperor for the execution of the traitor and his noble house, and that means the Emperor's beloved Yang Yuhuan as well. To reject the masses while a rebellion is on the rise would be suicidal, and the Emperor was forced to utter his orders with agonizing grief.
About a year later when things were mostly settled, the Emperor and a few of his loyal servants went and pick up her crudely buried body, against his advisors wishes, to be laid to rest in a proper
burial. It was said that the Emperor wept bitterly during the entire ordeal.

In traditional East Asian calendars, "Grain In Ear (芒種)" is the name of a period in a year around the middle of June in the Gregorian calendar. It's a period where all sorts of crops and grains get mature and are ripe for harvest. On a spiritual level, most East Asians believe in cause and effect; we reap what we sow! In this realm of uncertainties we witness the birth, growth, and passing of things; experience partings and togetherness. We think about these all the time, sometimes hesitate, maybe understand a little, and in the end perhaps even get bits of enlightenment. Despite it all, one thing is for certain, the choices we make today will return as the fruits of our actions in one form or another.

Spirits and other varieties of alcohol have always been deeply rooted in a culture that is universally shared, aka the drinking culture. The reason to drink however probably differs greatly from person to person. Some see it as a form of celebration and relaxation, while others drink to forget unhappy memories. In ancient China, many great works of artistic writing were often conceived under its influence, so much that one of the most well known poets of all time, Li Bai (李白), was nicknamed the "Deity of Wine". Regardless of the reasons to drink, always remember some words of old; fighting misery with alcohol does naught but makes the sorrow even greater! :(

A "moutan" refers to a type of moutan peony, a type of flower highly revered in Chinese culture since the times of old. The "King of the Hundred Flowers (百花之王)" as they would call it, its royal yet gentle appearance earned it a place as the national flower of China, symbolizing honour, nobility, love, and affection. While beautiful to look at, the moutan flowers also have a long history of harvest for their medical properties!

Homeward depicts a solitary individual's observations of the novelties in life; the past, present, and future; fondness and animosity; all in a seemingly state of anxiety. Due to the stylistic nature of the lyrics (and my own laziness!) a full English translation is not included. However I have inserted a couple of excerpts below that I think sums up the song's direction quite well.
"An abyss hidden from the eyes of the world.
I'll cast a light in it, heedless of the world's dissent.
An abyss hidden from the eyes of the world.
I'll shoot an arrow through it, heedless of the world's dissent."

Originally a theme song from a Chinese drama called The Story of Ming Lan, this solo performance brings forth a quieter and less dramatic impression of the original. The title of the song is derived from a classical Chinese poem written by a talented lady from the Song Dynasty era (960-1279) who was renown for her mastery in song and writing. Where most literary works of fame were written as just that, Li Qingzhao the poet in question, penned for both song and literature. Despite her fame and talent, her life fell into disarray when her first husband died, and she remarried into a family who only cared about stealing her work to be sold.
This is not the story of the drama that this song is based on though! if anyone is interested, you make look up the drama with the English title "The Story of Ming Lan" instead.

Hello! It's been so long since I last uploaded a video, but finally here it is! For those who have noticed, I'm sorry! A couple months back I received an e-mail from the youtube authorities with a warning in regards to the nature of my uploads. I almost had a heart attack when I saw it because I thought this channel was to be terminated for sure... Fortunately, they have now allowed my channel to continue to function, but will no longer have monetization rights even for content that were free to use. At any rate here's a new song that I hope you all will enjoy!

With the Lunar New Year just about a week away from now, a happy, charming piece is the perfect song to celebrate with! While not originally arranged for celebrating the new year, this song as implied by the title was made with a special type of tea in mind. The title of the song specifically mentions "Meiwu Tea(梅塢茶)", which is basically tea that came from a small place in Hangzhou, home to China's famous lake view, scenery, tea, and some pretty well preserved ancient architectures. But I digress, please sip on some tea, and enjoy this delightful piece! Have a happy lunar new year!!... Next week that is.

The inspiration for this song was derived from a thing called 生僻字 which somewhat literally translates as "obscure words" in English. Throughout several millennia worth of historical China, much of her languages have developed and evolved with the ages whereby remnants of these archaic terms slowly become obsolete as time goes by. But thanks to the way Chinese characters work, much of these terms are kept in records and can still be recited with all of today's most known Chinese languages namely in Mandarin and Cantonese... albeit with the help of a dictionary as not many can decipher those words accurately. With this, the original vocals of this song had entire parts of the lyrics based entirely on reciting these obscure and archaic terms, which amusingly caused some Chinese folk to doubt their identity.

Here's a quick and slightly upbeat music to start off the new year! Hope everyone enjoyed their time so far.
From the producers of this piece, the story goes that a young outlaw chanced upon a meeting with a beautiful girl whose smile captivated his heart. He wanted to be with her but knowing his place, he made a decision instead to leave the life of a common outlaw and turn over a new leaf. Through years of literal blood and sweat in the military, the boy has worked his way up to become a commander. With this new found confidence and longing to see the smile of the girl he loved he goes to find her, only to discover that the girl had already passed away. In a desperate act of grief, he left the palace and military, becoming and outlaw once again. He wondered, would things have been different if he had not let his desire for a name and status become a burden to his true goal?
P.S. Due to the nature of the track title in Chinese, the English title is not a proper translation, but a close approximation to the Chinese meaning. A literal translation would have made it rather sleazy!

"As far as we may journey in life, never forget the hand that guided us here in the beginning."
A continuation of the story from Frosted Brows (youtube.com/watch?v=rnqAM3ZUHw4), this theme depicts the realization of one's debt to the hand that once held them, which often ends in much regret for not having been enlightened sooner.
Story:
A child knows little of the world we live in, but with a hand clasped tightly on her clothes, he would fear nothing.
"Are you scared?", she chuckled, "don't worry kid, I'm following right behind you."
She would teach him the ways of the world and the necessities of self preservation, among many things. But as the river of time flows, so has the child grown, strong and independent, away from the hand that guided him through it all. He once asked, "Why do you keep following me? I can take care of myself now."
"I'm just scared... that I will never see you again."

The phrase "a prayer to Heaven and Earth" is usually associated with marriage in Chinese, as it is a part of the traditional marriage rites before two people can be considered husband and wife. It is followed by a bow of respect to the couple's parents, and then to each other, whereby they're officially husband and wife.

"Ink Spatters of the Li River" Cantonese lyrical version is here, with ridiculously bad translation by yours truly! Translating literary Chinese to English is a little mini-nightmare especially when trying to match the language to every syllable in the song. Halfway through the project I figured English and literary Chinese are just not meant to be... but I promised it and started it so here it is! Proud but not proud.

English lyrics:
An arcing river meshes with fresh verdant in the mist
A thicket of bamboo trees appear as the mist dispel
As the sky wanes into the twilight, my spirits won't fade
They're dancing in the waters hearing my song
Beholding mountains in the distant, they're mystifying
A drizzle paints the scenery like spatterings of ink
And with a few more strokes, crystal clear cascades
A tinge of endearing tunes as adorning
A sudden gust of wind send birds aflutter
A weary guest adrift toasts a cup in grief
A lifetime of drifting and wander, drinks and plenty leisure
Contentment through all hail, wind and storms
*Moonlight shimmers, rippling waters
What of the rise and fall of life relived in verse
Journey into Heaven and Earth
Where the vicissitudes of life is conceived
Behold this grandeur, I impart a song brimming with revere*
A serene lodging filled with scrolls and papers of fragrance
A peaceful village unhindered by secularity
It's like having an older brother, it's sister's comfort
A sincere serenade to let your heart soar
Somewhere in ages past a couple in love made a vow
Yet Heaven's will has naught but fail to join the crimson threads
Feeling one's beloved, grievance and sorrow
Just like a dream of movies roused from the pain
Hatred and resentments, merely fictitious
Let's learn to relent and cherish the blue skies
Picturesque scenes are hard to come by, journey forth and wander
With no fear to trudge on all alone
Moonlight shimmers, lotus blossoms
How much of love since ancient times were tried and true
Swift winds and clouds, swirling billows
Has worn down countless lamentations and grief
And like a passing cloud, conflict and romance, nothing matters now
Forlorn despair, at loss for words
Whenceforth ought we to see this world in dreams?
Let's witness nature's mountains and jadeite seas
And cast away all these feelings of despondence
(Sing again from *)

As the name implies, this song paints a vivid imagery of the Li River (漓江) in China. Starting out rather mildly, the song grows into a more dignified sensation of grandeur, just as it would feel to walk into a magical scenery. In the lyrical version, the song highlights acceptance to be a virtue in our lives. Please stay tuned for a Cantonese vocalized version with English translation that I might upload soon!
