Instead of taking accountability, everyone blames the landlord, or the business owner, or the council, or the government. Just ask yourself this: what am I doing to be a disability ally? Ask the right questions. Put pressure on those in charge. Together we can end this ableist discrimination.

The reality of train travel in a wheelchair Sophie Christiansen 2019-08-24 | I'm truly overwhelmed by the attention my video from Wednesday evening has received. I cannot thank you all enough for your kind words of support. Sadly though this was not a one-off occurrence and happens to me at least once every couple of months, and every day to wheelchair users across the country. This is not a South Western Railway problem but an industry-wide problem. (That is not a get-out clause though, SWR. It is a call to action to become the industry leader in accessibility!)The actions that should be taken by SWR and the rail industry are:* Improved communication between booking, platform and train staff. In this day and age, this should be an easy fix!* Collect data about travel assistance - where does communication break down? How often do disabled passengers not get the help they need? How can passengers and staff alike feed back on performance? This data should be made public by all train operators.* Investment in level access and automatic ramps. This will have to happen someday, so why not start now?* Compensate passengers who face extreme delay due to lack of access onto the train and to disabled toilets. The above needs be monitored by the government so that “public” transport is accessible to all. Change needs to happen by the train operators and enforced by the government – we don’t need an increase in advisors, groups and lobbyists, we need the CEOs to actually act.Most of the staff who help me are absolutely lovely and I hope that my story won't reflect badly on them - they are just dealing with a broken system.Access issues don't just occur on public transport however. The Disability Discrimination Act is not being followed by many businesses but YOU CAN HELP CHANGE THIS! We need allies to change society. If you work in a shop with a step or without a disabled toilet, ask your manager whether there is a process in place for disabled customers. If not, remind them that they are breaking the law and could be susceptible to legal action. Is your company's website readable by screen readers for customers with sight impairments and does it meet the standards of accessibility? These changes are not only morally right, but they make business sense as well. The disability population in the UK has a spending power of £80 billion. Is your company missing out?In an ideal world this change would happen on its own, but does the government need to enforce the Disability Discrimination Act? I would like to see a process in place where we can easily report breaches of the law and see action taking place now. Not in 10 years, not next century, but NOW.You can do your bit to make a difference! Become an equality ally!
