Matt Mulholland YouTube 2024-10-20 | Trying out something new! I miss doing covers sometimes, so I figured I'd use them as an opportunity to work on my production and mixing. All the instruments were recorded and mixed in my little home studio, and the vocal is done in one take as you watch it. We're in the future now!

I've always loved this song. Something so simple and true about the lyrics. You can just imagine some poor thespian type trying his best to give their partner something special, unable to buy anything fancy, they write a song instead. Now that I've written that down, I realise I've actually totally done that before, haha. I wonder if I can do it for every birthday, or if it will start getting old...

I use LUNA for my DAW now, and I'm so stoked with it. I moved from Logic a few months ago because I wasn't pumped with the direction their updates were taking, and I actually find LUNA to be way more intuitive and user friendly. Also I love aiming for analog saturation and classic vibes, which LUNA has built in. So it's not like it really does anything that you can't also do it Logic, but I just find the workflow easier and faster. I don't know why I'm writing about this, haha. Live your life.

The idea for this one was really simple - I kept finding myself dancing and grooving in the studio when I was making this track, and I wanted to capture that. Just a guy sitting alone in a room, enjoying the vibes of his creation. Don't make that dirty. We shot this in my studio and Jacob really brought the vibes, finding ways to make it look like different locations and scenes. He also made it look like I'm okay at dancing sometimes too! SURPRISE!! NEW SONG!! It's 80's, it's poppy, it's dancey, it's got vibes, get it in you. This one took a hot minute to release, so I'm stoked to finally get it out there.

I Wanna Love You kinda has the explanation in the title, but it's really about that feeling when you meet someone awesome and you want to take it to the next level, but you're scared and unsure if it's the right move or not. I usually let stray cats decide for me these days, but that's a weird story that I probably shouldn't share publicly. There's no real resolution to the question posed in the song, but I think the vibe encapsulates the excitement and nervous energy that exists when you start something new. I hope you like it!

Matt Mulholland YouTube 2022-05-12 | I used to find this song quite difficult to perform because of how close to my heart it was, but time often seems to make things easier if we let it. I wrote this maybe six or so years ago, so these days it feels more like singing it in solidarity with a younger version of myself, rather than expressing how I feel in the moment.

One of my favourite things about music is how it can help us to heal and understand. This song definitely helped me to heal, and I have to believe that it could maybe help someone else too. Song Notes:
I had no plan here, I was just messing around while procrastinating learning lines for a show I'm doing at the moment. I put up a video on TikTok of me working on it, which ended up getting like 100k views, so I was like "oh, maybe I'll finish it!"

I kinda wanted to make it more and more inappropriate as the song went on in classic YouTube style, but all of the comments I got were about how much their kids/students would like it. Maybe I'm getting soft in my old age, or maybe it's because I have two little nephews, but I decided I'd keep if family friendly. The result is a tune that's somewhere between a 2010 Pitbull song a 2030 Wiggles song. I'm not mad about it.

I did all the production myself, which I'm super stoked with! I've been building up my studio for the past year or so, and I feel like I've finally got to a point where I can make music start to finish and it actually sounds more or less like a commercial release. The game plan there is so I can release more music, faster and cheaper (if you remember, my first studio album took about 6 years to finish).

Anyway, hope you're doing well! I'm glad you're still here! I have to no time frame of release just yet, but I've got a kiiiiller live video concert of my album (After You Grow) almost ready to go, and I've got a new actual song almost ready to go too! I know I don't upload here very often, and that's mostly because I want to keep YouTube as a place where I release solid and professional content.

I'm on the Insta stories most days, and on the TikTok from time to time too, so come say hey if you want!

Shit guys, it's been a few weeks since I've put out my album, and what a ride it's been! I'll be honest and say the I barely know what I'm doing. Even though I spent a solid year or so researching best practices and release strategies and what not, I'm still like "uh... Profit?"

I absolutely social media'ed myself out during the pre-release, so I've taken a break from that for a little bit (great promotional strategy). I'm getting back on the buzz now though, especially as this whole lockdown thing in NZ is loosening up a bit. We're allowed to go outside and everything!
