Pas de deux from The Nutcracker by Tchaikovsky (Piano 4-hands) The Meeks Duo - Piano 4 hands 2024-06-07 | One of Tchaikovsky's most powerful compositions, this movement from The Nutcracker ballet is most often performed on piano in Mikhail Pletnev's solo piano transcription. I wanted to make a piano 4-hand transcription that preserves the thick orchestral texture without being too technically difficult. To accommodate the new layout, I sometimes had to move parts up or down an octave. Sometimes, the original registers worked perfectly without any change necessary, and for the most part, I kept each of piano 1 and piano 2 in either the primo or the secondo without needing to switch parts in the middle of a phrase. This beautiful Larghetto movement features a prominent solo piano part throughout, with the orchestra taking a secondary role, making this arrangement quite suitable for one piano, 4-hands. Only in the final section from 8:06 does the orchestra take over the melody (shifted to a lower octave to accommodate the piano solo part). I had always wanted to arrange Fly Me to the Moon, but was held back by my lack of confidence in the jazz language. One day, these two ideas clicked together, and thus was born this arrangement! A jazz song melded into the Classical language!I have been using this technique of combining and transforming various works for several years now, inspired by an assignment from Professor Emil Naoumoff at Indiana University, in Baroque seminar class, in which students had to transform the Bach Prelude in C from the Well-Tempered Clavier Book 1 into any other piece of their choice.The 1st movement begins identically to Beethoven’s original, but when the melody enters at 0:25, it suddenly modulates to F minor, since Fly Me to the Moon begins on the 3rd scale degree (Beethoven’s G-sharp melody becomes A-flat). I took various patterns from Beethoven, such as the recurring triplets in the middle voice, dotted rhythm melody, the exchange of treble and tenor melodies (m. 28-31 in Beethoven, 1:22), and the rising broken chords (m. 32-35, 1:37).The 2nd movement (2:20) retains Beethoven’s articulation and rhythm, but all the harmonies and melodies are transformed. (Trio section at 2:37)The 3rd movement (2:55) keeps Beethoven’s original rising broken chord pattern (with new harmonies) in the secondo part while the Fly Me to the Moon melody is in the primo. Beethoven 5th Symphony - Happy Birthday mash-up! (piano duet) The Meeks Duo - Piano 4 hands 2023-12-16 | Here is our tribute to the great composer Ludwig van Beethoven on his birthday (December 16, 1770) - his Symphony no. 5 (parts of all four movements!) transformed into the Happy Birthday song! (We had some fun with minor to major key changes too!) This transformation technique is thanks to an assignment in one of my grad school courses, where the professor, Emile Naoumoff made each student transform Bach's C major Prelude into a piece of their choice.The first movement begins in major instead of minor, but goes back into minor at the end. The second movement theme main theme didn't work too well with Happy Birthday, so I focused on the second theme, which worked perfectly! The third movement also had a perfectly fitting rhythm for Happy Birthday. The transition to the fourth movement in Beethoven's original was one of the most memorable listening experiences for me as a teenager studying for my music history exam.
