It can be difficult to know exactly what PPE you need. If in doubt, you can always find details of what you should be wearing with what tool in the Instruction Manual. Alternatively, this information can be found at https://www.stihl.co.uk.
If you are an occasional chainsaw user, then our new STIHL chainsaw PPE kit is a great place to start. The kit contains some of the key items of Personal Protective Equipment, including our STIHL Function Slim clear safety glasses, one pair of Function SensoTouch gloves in size large, a pair of STIHL TIMBERSPORTS® Edition ear defenders and a pair of STIHL 270-degree adjustable chainsaw chaps. These offer protection across the front of your legs, so they are ideal if you are using your STIHL chainsaw to process firewood, or prune branches in your garden.
The PPE kit doesn’t include a face visor or chainsaw boots, so we recommend that you buy these separately, and if you are using your chainsaw where there is a risk of falling objects, we also recommend wearing a helmet.

The REA 60 PLUS is part of the STIHL AK System of battery tools and is designed for medium-sized to larger gardens, making it perfect for use at home, whereas the REA 100 PLUS battery-powered pressure washer is part of the STIHL AP System of battery tools for large gardens and professional applications.
Both STIHL batteries are interchangeable with other tools in their battery system. The AK battery that is used in the STIHL REA 60 PLUS can be used to power all the other AK System tools to cover all your gardening tasks. The AP battery that is used in the REA 100 PLUS cordless pressure washer can power an even more extensive range of powerful AP System tools, such as professional cordless chainsaws, hedge trimmers, battery-powered blowers, pole pruners and more.
As these STIHL pressure washers are battery-powered, it means they aren’t reliant on a power connection and instead are portable devices that can be used anywhere from campsites, bike trails, on farm machinery, or in home gardens, on patios and decking. If you are using them away from a water connection, you can attach a suction hose to the pressure washer and place this in a water container. A STIHL 5-metre suction hose with a filter and weighted base can be bought separately.
These battery-powered pressure washers have a quiet and powerful EC motor which work in combination with the high-pressure pump and aluminium pump head of the pressure washer. The STIHL REA 60 PLUS has an operating pressure of 100 bar and a water flow rate of 240 litres per hour. Whereas, the STIHL REA 100 PLUS has an operating pressure of 125 bar and a water flow rate of 270 litres per hour. The pressure can be adjusted on both battery pressure washers with the variable control switch to suit the cleaning job at hand.
Both cordless STIHL pressure washers come with a spray lance and a 3-in-1 nozzle, which allows you to choose between 3 different cleaning modes by simply twisting the nozzle to the chosen mode. The fan jet nozzle is designed for cleaning normal dirt off surfaces, the rotary nozzle is designed for removing stubborn dirt from robust surfaces and the cleaning agent nozzle combines water and a detergent, allowing you to spray the mixture directly onto a surface. To add detergent to the pressure washer, simply pull out the detergent hose and place it into the detergent bottle of your choice.
The spray lance has an anti-twist quick-release coupling which prevents it from getting tangled during cleaning jobs and the pressure washer has an integrated 5-metre hose reel on the STIHL REA 60 PLUS, and a 6-metre hose reel on the REA 100 PLUS. The spray lance splits in two and can be stored on the pressure washer alongside the 3-in-1 nozzle, to make transporting and storing the cordless pressure washer easier too.
There is a full range of additional accessories sold separately for STIHL pressure washers, such as a foam nozzle, surface cleaner and rotating roller brush – which all extend the use of your machine. The STIHL REA 60 PLUS pressure washer has a working time of up to 25 minutes with the recommended STIHL AK 30 S battery, and the REA 100 PLUS has a working time of up to 45 minutes with the recommended AP 300 S battery.

🔶 About Dyrham Park
Once home to the Blathwayt family, Dyrham Park is a baroque mansion surrounded by 270 acres of gardens and parkland. The estate showcases a blend of historic architecture, formal gardens, and lush green landscapes packed with wildlife such as deer. Visitors can explore the beautifully restored house, which displays an impressive collection of Dutch art, furniture, and tapestries from the 17th century.
🔶 Behind the Scenes with Jane Moore and Piers Horry
Award-winning gardener and writer, Jane Moore, spoke to Dyrham Park’s Head Gardener, Piers Horry, who explained that the site has a long history dating back to the 6th century. But much of the current estate dates from 17th century, when there was Dutch king on the throne, so the entire garden is created and tells the story of allegiance to William III, using a formal baroque-style garden. Although some of the gardens have been lost over time, the team at Dyrham Park have recreated part of the original gardens.
Features of Dyrham Park include the avenue and the cascade. The Lorette style of pruning is used on the espaliered apple trees that run along the edges of the avenue to create interesting shapes, whilst the cascade is bordered by formal hedges. The cascade is part of the surviving 17th-century garden and is where the underground river flows out into the pools.
Thanks to the partnership between STIHL and the National Trust, Dyrham Park's landscapes and gardens are carefully maintained with state-of-the-art battery-powered-tools.
We hope you’ve enjoyed this behind-the-scenes look at Dyrham Park. Don’t forget to subscribe to the STIHL GB YouTube channel to ensure you don’t miss out on the next behind-the-scenes video with National Trust.

It’s quick and easy to remove the collection bag and suction tube on this cordless leaf shredder vacuum without tools, so you can clean it or clear blockages in no time, and it has a metal mulching blade to significantly reduce the volume of any debris that has been collected.
The STIHL SHA 140 cordless vacuum shredder also has a boost function when maximum power is needed. To activate it, pull the throttle trigger all the way in and hold it in the position highlighted in the video. Then, when you don’t need maximum power, you can extend the battery life by using it at the normal power level.
The collection bag has a 55-litre capacity and is vented in a way that helps to deliver constant suction power, regardless of the fill level or the degree of dust and dirt in the bag. The shape of the collection bag is designed for quick and complete emptying, and it features robust metal buckles.
The STIHL SHA 140 cordless leaf vacuum mulcher is suitable for use in all weather conditions, even when it’s raining, and it’s quiet so you won’t need to wear ear defenders with it either. You can also use it with the STIHL Smart Connector 2 A, a small device that records the working time and operating speed of the tool. This information is sent via Bluetooth to the STIHL Connected App, where it can be synced to a maintenance schedule. For large fleets of battery or petrol tools, STIHL Connected offers a smart and streamlined way of ensuring all tools are kept in great condition.

With the recommended STIHL AP 300 S battery, the working time is up to 60 minutes, depending on the material being shredded. This also gives you great balance on the tool to make it easy to manoeuvre around obstacles over extended periods.

With no emissions at operator level, no fuel to mix and simple controls, the STIHL TSA 300 is a very capable tool with a wide range of uses from garden landscaping, road works, pipeline construction, utility company works, fire and rescue services, plus much more. This cordless cut off machine is ideal for cutting brick, paving, patio slabs, pipe, concrete, natural stone, rebar and more. It’s well suited to smaller cutting tasks; for longer cuts, such as along a stretch of tarmac, a petrol-driven tool will be a better option. When cutting paving slabs, working time is up to 20 minutes or approximately 8m of paving cuts.
When cutting materials to size, the new STIHL TSA 300 cut off machine is ideal, and if you need to carry out recise cuts, such as on porcelain tiles for a patio, this tool excels. It‘s also capable of cutting 110mm deep, which is 10mm deeper than the STIHL TS 410, our equivalent 12“ petrol cut off machine.
A key benefit of the TSA 300 cordless cut off machine is the compact and well-considered design. As with all AP System battery tools, the battery sits within the product. This gives it perfect weight distribution for excellent balance and straightforward use. It’s very easy to use - simply put in a battery, press the activation switch as demonstrated in the video and pull the trigger.
With 2.5kW mechanical power, the STIHL TSA 300 cut off machine is comparable in cutting capability to its petrol-powered counterpart, TS 410 cut off machine, whilst the overall weight of the tool with the AP 500 S battery is 8.3kg, compared to the TS 410 at 9.5 kg.
The TSA 300 cut off machine gives an extremely neat and narrow cut, which can lead to less wastage and higher accuracy when cutting, as you’re more controlled in the cut and less likely for the offcuts to break, so they can be re-used elsewhere. It has a robust design as you’d expect from a STIHL construction tool, coupled with IPX4 water resistance, which means it is resistant to water spraying from all directions, so it’s certainly capable of working in the rain and use on-site. As with our petrol-powered cut-off machines, it features a magnesium guard for low weight and high strength.
Another great feature of the TSA 300 is the variable speed control so you have full control of the throttle in the cut. Plus, once you have finished cutting, it will coast down to a standstill in less than 4 seconds.
Overall, the new TSA 300 complements our existing line-up of construction equipment so you can choose the right cutting tool for the job.

The FSA 120 cordless brushcutter features a bike handle, designed for clearing large open areas. Alternatively, the FSA 120 R has a loop handle that positions the tool across the body, perfect for quickly trimming lawn edges and around tight obstacles. Adjusting the loop handle has never been easier thanks to the new quick-release system. Simply release the orange clamp and move the handle to a position that best suits you.
Weighing just over 6 kilograms with the recommended STIHL AP 300 S battery, the FSA 120 is perfectly balanced, easy to manoeuvre and comfortable to use for prolonged periods. The harness hook can also be adjusted to suit you, helping to spread the weight of the tool on your shoulders.
Using the FSA 120 cordless brushcutter is easy. After checking the work areas for wildlife, slot in the battery, push the lever forward with your thumb, and then with your hand across the grip, simply pull the trigger.
You have a choice of two power levels when using the STIHL FSA 120 brushcutter. Eco mode can be used for lighter tasks, such as trimming lawn edges, and it reduces the rpm to extend the run time. Level 2 is for maximum performance and demanding applications, such as clearing scrub. In both modes the variable trigger also allows you to adjust the speed to suit the job at hand, thanks to the brushless EC motor.
The bike handle FSA 120 brushcutter includes a metal cutting blade as standard. The blade is great for overgrown weeds and woodier stems. The grass blade offers up to 100 minutes of working time with the recommended STIHL AP 300 S battery whilst in Eco mode or 60 minutes at full power. Grass blades contribute towards a longer working time compared to a line head, making them a popular choice for cordless brushcutters.
The loop handle FSA 120 R comes with a STIHL AutoCut 27-2 mowing head which works well around obstacles such as plant pots and pathways. The FSA 120 R battery-powered brushcutter has a working time of up to 50 minutes with the AutoCut head whilst in Eco mode or 30 minutes at full power.
A variety of grass blades, AutoCut, TrimCut and PolyCut heads can be fitted to either of the FSA 120 brushcutters to best suit your needs, and the tool will automatically detect which attachment is fitted and optimise the rpm accordingly for best performance. For example, you will get up to 7800 rpm with a line head, or 9700 rpm with a metal blade.
The FSA 120 cordless brushcutter is compatible with any AP System battery, ranging from the AP 200 to the AP 500 S depending on the working time required. There are over 30 tools in the STIHL AP System, meaning the AP battery system can be used for all your landscaping tasks.

It's important to wear the correct PPE when using a brushcutter. Eye and face protection is essential to protect against stones and debris, we’d also recommend a sturdy pair of work boots and a pair of grippy gloves. Like many battery-powered tools, the STIHL FSA 120 does not require ear protection, but over long periods a pair of our Bluetooth ear defenders may make the task more enjoyable.

The FSA 80 brushcutter features a bike handle, designed for clearing large open areas. Alternatively, the FSA 80 R has a loop handle that positions the tool across the body, perfect for quickly trimming lawn edges and around obstacles. Adjusting the loop handle on these cordless brushcutters has never been easier thanks to the new quick-release system. To adjust, simply release the orange clamp and move the handle to a position that’s most comfortable for you.
Both versions of the FSA 80 cordless brushcutter are comfortable to use over longer periods, and the harness hook can also be adjusted for optimum balance, spreading the weight of the tool on your shoulders. The STIHL FSA 80 R comes with a single shoulder harness, whilst the FSA 80 battery-powered brushcutter comes with a double shoulder harness.
Using the STIHL FSA 80 battery brushcutter is easy. After checking the work areas for wildlife, first put in the STIHL AK battery. The first click of the battery confirms it is in the transport position, meaning the battery is locked but not live, great for moving the tool around the garden. The second click indicates the tool is live. Then just push the lever forward with your thumb, then with your hand across the grip, simply pull the trigger.

There are several different STIHL cutting attachments which can be fitted to the STIHL FSA 80, depending on what you are cutting. Maintaining the impressive grounds to such a high standard is a challenge for the team of gardeners, but using STIHL cordless power tools has made the job a bit easier in recent years. STIHL visited them to find out more about how they used them.
When The Alnwick Gardens was initially designed, it was estimated that around 60,000 visitors would visit each year but in recent years the footfall has been around 400,000 visitors. Maintaining the gardens with a regular flow of guests can be really challenging as guests are expecting a peaceful and quiet environment. Tasks such as cutting the hornbeams can take around 8 weeks on their own whilst maintaining all the hedges on the grounds take approximately 4 months of the year so there’s work going on all year round.
With the use of STIHL battery power tools, the team at The Alnwick Garden have found their working day runs a lot smoother. The noise, weight and vibrations make it easier for the team to use STIHL tools over much longer periods. The gardens have to be maintained whilst guests are on site so the low-noise STIHL tools help deliver a quieter experience for the guests.
Tom Thompson, gardener at The Alnwick Gardens, described the use of STIHL cordless tools as “an absolute game changer”.

With a maximum blowing force of 26 Newtons, the small and mighty STIHL BGA 250 is our most powerful battery-powered blower to date. It’s practical size and impressive power makes it ideal for working quickly around tight obstacles, clearing smaller areas of leaves and hedge clippings.
The BGA 250 cordless leaf blower features a compact and lightweight design, making it easy to position left and right, with no strain on your wrist and arm. The angle of the handle compared to the blowing tube also keeps the blower steady, even when on maximum power, for effortless control. The battery’s location underneath the impeller and handle means the STIHL BGA 250 blower is perfectly balanced, with no tipping required to get the right angle.
The controls of the STIHL BGA 250 are simple. As demonstrated in the video this cordless leaf blower has a variable speed trigger with a built-in boost mode, for temporarily increasing to maximum power which is great for stubborn patches of wet leaves. Selecting one of the three power settings helps to match the blowing power to the job at hand, in turn getting the best from the battery. Cruise control can be used on longer jobs, and finally a shoulder harness can be attached here if needed, taking the weight from your hand.
Like many of STIHL battery powered tools, the BGA 250 battery-powered blower is so quiet that wearing ear defenders is not a requirement, allowing work to be completed without disturbing customers. The PPE we’d recommend for working with our battery blowers includes safety glasses, sturdy shoes and protective work gloves.

The working time with the recommended STIHL AP 300 S battery ranges from 12-40 minutes, depending on the power level used. A feature that makes STIHL batteries stand out from the crowd is our constant power output. Whether you’re 100% charged or 20%, you’ll get full power right until the end with no tail off in performance.

The idea for the Cycling Gardeners came from dealing with the challenges of moving around Edinburgh in vans. As a bustling capital city, the traffic in Edinburgh meant that staff were often sitting in traffic in their vans for longer than they actually spent working. So, they decided to swap vans for bikes!
Since the swap, the Cycling Gardeners have been able to work much more efficiently, without wasting time navigating traffic or finding parking spaces.
The Cycling Gardeners team only use battery-powered tools now too. In the heavily populated city of Edinburgh, using battery tools means they can get the job done, but without disturbing anyone around them, thanks to the quieter operation. The tools are also lighter, with less vibrations and no emissions during use.
By switching to cargo bikes and STIHL cordless tools, and installing solar panels in their yard, the Cycling Gardeners have also managed to keep their energy costs extremely low. Last year, their electricity costs were just £200!
To find out more about the Cycling Gardeners, you can visit their website.

Maintaining the gardens comes with its challenges as it’s important to consider the guests who are staying at the hotel or roaming the grounds and expecting peaceful surroundings. In the past, petrol garden tools have been used which create a noisy environment for both the guests and the gardening team. When using petrol tools, the team at Glenapp Castle restricted their start time to 10 am. This allows guests to enjoy a quiet time during breakfast and whilst getting out of bed in the morning.
Now, with the use of STIHL battery-powered landscaping tools, the team can extend their working period and begin work on the grounds before 10 am. Starting a couple of hours earlier allows them to maximise their working day and work more efficiently and they don’t have to worry about disturbing guests due to how quiet the battery-powered tools are.
The team at Glenapp Castle invited STIHL to visit to see how impressed they have been with STIHL cordless power tools. The noise, vibrations and weight mean that the STIHL tools are much easier for the gardening team to work with, as well as delivering a quieter, more pleasant experience for Glenapp’s guests.

Powered by a 10.8-volt lithium-ion battery, they effortlessly cut through branches with a diameter of up to 25 mm in one clean cut. What’s more, the battery that fits the STIHL ASA 20 can also be used in other tools in the AS System range, such as the STIHL GTA 26 cordless pruner, HSA 26 battery shrub shears and SEA 20 vacuum.
To use the ASA 20 electric secateurs, first remove the protective sheath. Then, press and hold the power button at the bottom of the tool for a few seconds. It will make a beeping sound to indicate when the secateurs are turned on and the display screen will light up. Pull the trigger twice to open the secateur blades, allowing you to begin working.
You can set the cordless powered secateurs to two different opening widths by holding the trigger down for 3 seconds. This allows you to adjust the ASA 20 electric secateurs to the type of work you are doing whether that be larger or smaller branches. The screen will show you the charge level and which blade width mode the STIHL ASA 20 is set to. It also shows you the total number of cuts the tool has done from the date of purchase, which is helpful for determining when the blades require maintenance. The ASA 20 can make around 2000 cuts on a single battery charge.
The STIHL ASA 20 battery secateurs have a progressive cut which means the blade follows your finger movement on the trigger. This allows for precise cuts to be made. The fast-closing speed and high cutting performance of the secateur blades means you can work quickly and efficiently with the tool. It has great balance, low weight and an ergonomically designed handle – meaning you can work comfortably over long periods of time.
To turn the STIHL ASA 20 off, hold the trigger for 5 seconds. This will then close the blades when you hear a beeping sound. Once the blades are closed, simply press and hold the power button until you hear another beep which indicates the tool is turned off. If you leave the ASA 20 battery-powered secateurs for a few minutes without using it, it will turn itself off automatically. A quick guide with these instructions is also located on the side of the tool for quick reference.
The STIHL AS 2 battery is inserted at the rear of the tool, so it is out of the way during work. A maintenance tool for the secateur blades is in the battery compartment which allows for easy adjustment of the blade clearance or opening of the service flap if a blade needs to be replaced.
The STIHL ASA 20 cordless secateurs are available as a tool only if you already have the AS 2 battery, or as a set with an AS 2 battery and STIHL AL 1 charger. Some additional accessories for the ASA 20 include Multioil Bio and Superclean spray for the blade set. You can also purchase additional secateur blades for the ASA 20 if they become damaged or worn after use.

🔶 STIHL Superclean: stihl.co.uk/en/ap/superclean-1064
When using the ASA 20, we recommend wearing goggles, gloves and sturdy shoes.

The 4 series range has several mowers with different sized sturdy and lightweight polymer decks, with each deck size indicated by the model's name. The STIHL RM 443 has a 43 cm deck, RM 448 has a 48cm deck and the RMA 453 has a 53 cm deck.
If the 4 series mower has a T in the model name, it has one speed drive, whilst models with a V have variable speed drive so you can adapt the speed to the lawn, if you need to mow more slowly in tricky to navigate areas. Vario drive models allow you to easily vary the speed of the mower between 2 and 4.5 km/h per using a simple lever on the bar.
A good lawn mower is made up of a combination of factors. Firstly, the mower blade needs to be designed to give sufficient lift to the grass to make sure it stands up straight for a precise cut on the lawn. For this lift, there needs to be good airflow under the deck of the mower, and enough flow generated so if you’re collecting your cuttings, they can be directed into the collection box. All STIHL lawn mowers are designed with this in mind, as well as ease of use.
All models feature our mono-handlebar which makes it simple to access, remove and replace the grass catcher box, as you don’t need to crouch or stretch underneath where the other bar would be. This mono handlebar is incredibly sturdy but is simple to fold so when you’ve finished mowing, you can fold it over to save space.
All new STIHL 4 series petrol mowers have a 4 in 1 mowing function so you can choose to cut and collect the clippings, cut and drop the clippings, mulch the clippings by returning the fine clippings back to the lawn or you can side discharge by opening the side flap and adding the chute which is included with the mower. You don’t need a mulch plug if you want to mulch either, there’s a handy switch on the mower which blocks the grass box, so you can easily make the switch while you’re mowing depending on your preference.
The polymer box has many key benefits including great air flow to fill the grass box. All vents on the petrol 4 series mowers face downwards so all dust is directed towards the ground. On top there’s a fill indicator which drops when the box is full, reminding you to empty it. The box is simple to open and empty the grass cuttings too. Simply grab the handles and release the switch to open it up like a clamshell. A polymer box is also simple to clean out and dries quickly too.
All 4 series petrol models have a tough polymer deck, and most of the rest of the mower is made from high grade polymer or steel components, so they are light and easily manoeuvrable. The design also means that pivoting at the end of the lawn is very easy and requires minimal effort.
The mowing height is adjusted simply with the help of our single point height adjustment. Just pop your hand under the bar and lift to raise the cutting height, or gently press down to lower it. The mowing height can be adjusted from 20-100mm too, making them well suited to many different lawns and easily adjustable through the seasons.
To keep the mower’s wheels moving freely, we’ve fitted double ball bearing wheels which have a great service life and help keep the mower moving easily, and straight for longer. Some additional accessories for the petrol 4 series mowers include the STIHL RM care kits, which include a cleaning spray, cloth and a brush to scrape grass from the deck, keeping it working as intended for longer.

The 2 series range has a few models with different-sized sturdy steel decks, with each deck size indicated by the model's name – the STIHL RM 248 has a 48cm deck and the RM 253 has a 53cm deck.
There are also mowers in the 2 series range that have single-speed drive, ideal for larger lawns. These models will have a T at the end of the product name, such as the STIHL RM 248 T. Powered by efficient petrol engines, they're able to efficiently drive the blade in the varying widths of models, as well as providing drive to the rear wheels of some model too.
A good petrol lawn mower is made up of a combination of factors – the blade needs to be designed to give sufficient lift to the grass to make sure it stands up straight for a neat cut. For this lift, there needs to be good airflow under the deck of the mower, and enough flow generated so if you’re collecting your cuttings, they can be directed into the collection box, and pack it full. All mowers in the range are designed with this in mind, as well as ease of use.

These new petrol mowers feature a 4 in 1 mowing function. As a result, you can choose to cut and collect the clippings, cut and drop the clippings, mulch if you want to send the fine clippings back to the lawn as a natural, nutrient-rich fertiliser or finally, you can side discharge by opening the side flap and adding the chute which is included with the mower. To mulch, simply put the mulch plug in the back of the mower to block the grass chute.
The polymer box has many key benefits. On top there’s a fill indicator which drops when the box is full, reminding you to empty it. The box is very simple to open and empty the grass cuttings too; simply grab the handles and release the switch to open it up like a clamshell. A polymer box is also very simple to clean out and will dry quickly when washed.
Whilst these petrol mowers have a tough steel deck, much of the rest of the mower is made from high-grade polymer components, so the handle is comfortable to hold, and the mower is light and still easily manoeuvrable. The design also means that pivoting at the end of the lawn is simple and requires minimal effort.

Powered by a 36 Volt AK System battery, they have the power to drive the blade, as well as providing drive to the rear wheels of some models. When you’ve finished mowing, you can pop the STIHL AK battery into many of the other tools in the AK System range, such as cordless blowers, grass trimmers, hedge trimmers and battery chainsaws.
A good mower is made up of several factors. The blade needs to be designed to give sufficient lift to the grass to make sure it stands up straight for a neat cut. For this lift, there needs to be good airflow under the deck of the mower, and enough flow generated so if you’re collecting your cuttings, they can be directed into the collection box.
On the top of the mower is the battery slot cover and underneath there’s a battery slot to power the battery-powered mower - as well as an additional inactive slot to store another battery. STIHL 4 series models also have an ECO mode which slows down the blade when full power isn’t needed, conserving battery life.
All mowers feature our mono-handlebar which makes it easy to access, remove and replace the grass catcher box. This handlebar has a sturdy feel to it and is also foldable, so when you’ve finished mowing, you can fold it over for space-saving storage.
The STIHL 4 series models have variable speed drive, except for the RMA 443. Our Vario drive mowers allow you to vary the speed between 2 and 4.5 km/h via a lever on the bar.
An exciting mower in the range is the new STIHL RMA 448 RV, STIHL’s first battery-powered rear roller lawn mower. Not only does this model leave a nice striped finish on the lawn, but the battery-powered real roller also makes it easy to mow around borders and edges without dropping a rear wheel into the flower bed and scalping the grass.
These new AK System mowers have a 4-in-1 mowing function. You can choose to cut and collect the clippings, cut and drop the clippings, mulch if you want to send the fine clippings back to the lawn or finally, with the exception of the roller model, you can side discharge by opening the side flap and adding the chute which is included with the mower. You don’t need a mulch plug if you want to mulch either, there’s a switch on the mower which blocks the grass chute.
The polymer box has a few key benefits including great air flow to fill the grass box full. All the vents face downwards, so in summer if it’s dusty, it’s all directed towards the ground. On top, there’s a fill indicator which drops when the box is full. The box is easy to open and empty the grass cuttings too; just grab the handles and release the switch to open it up. A polymer box is also simple to clean out and it dries quickly too.

Designed for selected AP System tools, the ADA 1000 adapter is an alternative to the STIHL AR 2000 L and AR 3000 L backpack batteries and has two slots which can fit any STIHL AP battery. It weighs 5.5 kg with two AP 300 S batteries, which is significantly less than an AR backpack battery, and has an automatic switchover feature - meaning when one battery runs out of power, it will automatically switch over to the next one.
The STIHL ADA 1000 battery adapter is designed primarily to be used with the STIHL BGA 300 backpack blower to reduce the weight of the cordless blower when working over long periods of time. When using the BGA 300 with the recommended STIHL AR 3000 L battery, it weighs 16.9kg. When paired with the ADA 1000 plus 2 AP 500 S batteries, the weight of the leaf blower is reduced to 13.3 kg. This makes working over long periods of time much more comfortable as you are carrying less weight on your back. For further weight reduction, it can be used with just one battery as opposed to two – although this will lower the working time of the machine.
🔶 STIHL BGA 300 Backpack Blower: stihl.co.uk/en/p/leaf-blowers-blowers-vacuum-shredders-bga-300-ap-system-174240
The STIHL ADA 1000 is compatible with both the BGA 300.1 and BGA 300.0 cordless leaf blower models. However, when used on the older BGA 300.0 version it will not have the automatic switchover feature due to differences in software between the two models. This means you will have to manually change the batteries from slot 2 to slot 1. To determine which BGA 300 battery-powered leaf blower you have, refer to the label on the machine or speak with your local STIHL Approved Dealer.
🔶 stihl.co.uk/en/dealers
The STIHL ADA 1000 is also compatible with the RMA 765 V professional battery lawn mower. It slots into the housing where the AR battery would normally go. The automatic switchover between batteries does work with the STIHL RMA 765 V cordless mower, meaning you can work without having to manually change the batteries over.
🔶 STIHL RMA 765 V Battery-powered Lawn Mower: stihl.co.uk/en/p/lawn-mowers-rma-765-ap-system-107817
The ADA 1000 can also be used with the STIHL AR L carrying system for tools that require an AR backpack battery, such as the BGA 200 cordless leaf blower. As with the BGA 300.0, the automatic switchover will not work when paired with the carrying system and the batteries will need to be manually changed. We do not recommend using the STIHL ADA 1000 battery adapter with any tools where there is the risk of cutting the cable, such as chainsaws or hedge trimmers. However, there are more suitable and affordable carrying options, such as an AP backpack carrying system or an AP holster on a hip belt with the connecting cable.

The FSA 30 battery-powered grass trimmer is extremely lightweight, weighing 2.3 kg when powered by the 10.8 volt STIHL AS 2 battery. It has great balance making it easy to work in small gardens, plus the battery can be removed and used in any other machine in the STIHL AS System range. The AS 2 battery can be charged to full power in 70 mins using the STIHL AL 1 charger and you can check the charge status of the battery during use by pressing the indicator button on the side of the FSA 30 cordless trimmer.

🔶 STIHL AL 1 Charger: stihl.co.uk/en/ap/standard-charger-al-1-107869
On a full charge, you’ll be able to cut for up to 14 minutes when using the STIHL PolyCut 3-2 blades, which come as standard on the FSA 30 garden trimmer. Or, if you prefer to use a mowing line, you can fit pre-cut lengths of mowing line or switch to an AutoCut C 3-2 mowing head.
🔶 STIHL PolyCut 3-2 Blades: stihl.co.uk/en/ap/blades-for-polycut-2-2-76549
🔶 STIHL AutoCut C 3-2 Mowing Head: stihl.co.uk/en/ap/polycut-3-2-109264
To use the STIHL FSA 30 cordless garden trimmer, simply push the rocker switch down and pull the trigger under the soft grip handle and you’re ready to go! Please make sure to always check for wildlife before starting work with the FSA 30.
Additional features of the STIHL FSA 30 grass trimmer include a tool-free adjustable length shaft and handle, which lets you set the FSA 30 to suit your height and can be rotated 90 degrees to make edging along lawns easier and more precise.
The angle of the mowing head can be adjusted to one of four positions too, so you can precisely cut next to flower beds or along pathways. Plus, there is a spacer bracket on the mowing head which means you can mow around obstacles or against fence lines without causing any damage. This is particularly important when trimming around trees as damaging the bark can be fatal to a tree.
Spare STIHL PolyCut blades can be stored on the underside of the machine and are simple to fit and replace on the FSA 30 grass trimmer too. Pull and lift the old blade up to release it from the head. To fit the new blade, place the blade on the mowing head and push it down to secure it in place. To make the PolyCut blades more durable, we also recommend soaking them in water for 24 hours before use.
What’s more, the FSA 30 battery-powered grass trimmer features a hanging eyelet so you can mount it in your shed or garage for space-saving storage. When using the FSA 30 grass trimmer, we recommend wearing face protection, goggles, gloves, and sturdy boots. No ear protection is required when using the tool as it’s so quiet.
🔶 STIH PPE: stihl.co.uk/en/ac/personal-protective-equipment-98284
Some additional accessories available for the STIHL FSA 30 cordless grass trimmer include Multispray which is used to clean the grass trimmer, replacement PolyCut blades for the mowing head or a Smart Connector which records working time and recommends servicing tasks based on this in the handy STIHL Connected app.

There are 6 new STIHL iMOW® robotic lawn mowers in the range with two models in each number series, starting with the 5 series models for lawns up to 1500 square metres, the 6 series models for lawns up to 3000 square metres and 7 series models which are suitable for lawns up to 5000 square metres.
🔶 STIHL iMOW® 5 EVO: stihl.co.uk/en/p/iMOW®-robotic-mowers-%C2%A1mow-5-evo-164692
🔶 STIHL iMOW® 6 EVO: stihl.co.uk/en/p/iMOW®-robotic-mowers-%C2%A1mow-6-evo-164647
🔶 STIHL iMOW® 7 EVO: stihl.co.uk/en/p/iMOW®-robotic-mowers-%C2%A1mow-7-evo-164641
Once you’ve chosen a model to suit your lawn size, you have the choice between a non-mobile connected version which has the white cover, whilst the darker grey EVO models are mobile connected, allowing you to connect to it from wherever you are.
This means you can control many functions from the MY iMOW® App such as sending it out to mow, sending it back to the dock, changing its mowing plan or checking on its status wherever you are. The connected iMOW® EVO models also have an LED matrix display on the top to show its status too.
Whilst the EVO models have a mobile connection, all iMOW® models can be controlled easily in the MY iMOW® App either via your home Wi-Fi network if it reaches across your garden, or via Bluetooth when you’re close to the machine.
These robotic mowers can be installed by laying or burying a thin wire around the outer edges of your lawn, and around any obstacles like shrubs, trees, flower beds or water features. A second wire in the centre of the lawn helps the robotic mower travel home to charge. If it comes across other objects in the mowing area, the iMOW® sensors simply kick in, slow it down, softly bump into the obstacle, and then it goes off in another direction.
Whilst you can install these mowers yourself, our network of STIHL Approved Dealers across Great Britain would also be more than happy to help you install them, which is recommended for trickier installations with complex gardens or multiple mowing areas.
iMOW® is a mulching mower - meaning it cuts small clippings of grass and drops it back into the lawn, acting as a natural and nutrient-rich fertiliser, with the bonus of never having to empty your grass box again. These robotic mowers cut the grass little and often so that the small clippings decompose quickly and easily, leaving no trace apart from a well-nourished, lush, green lawn. On the latest generation of STIHL iMOW® mowers, we use a swing tip blade system that’s efficient, plus the blades have 4 cutting edges which rotate each time the blade stops to help them last as long as possible.
STIHL iMOW® has a dynamic mowing plan that can be easily tailored to your needs, so it can be programmed to mow when you’re not using your garden. It’s quiet so it won’t disturb you if you’re having a quiet afternoon relaxing on the patio. A key advantage of the STIHL iMOW® is its quick mowing times, so you can spend more time enjoying the garden with a lawn that always looks freshly mown. Adjustable rain sensors let you choose whether it continues to work in the rain or makes up the mowing time when it dries up.
You don’t have to worry about charging the iMOW®’s lithium-ion battery either. It simply finds its way back to the weatherproof docking station and charges itself, ready for the next cut. If you want to quickly check the status of the robotic mower without opening the app, or perhaps someone in the family who isn’t using the app wants to check when it will next mow, they can press the info button on the top of the iMOW®, which will tell you when the next mowing session is. You can also send it home, send it out to mow, or lock it with the buttons on top of the mower.
It doesn’t matter if your garden isn’t perfectly flat either – iMOW®’s gradient sensors help it manage its speeds so it can handle up to 40% slopes with ease. There are also wheel kits to help it get up steeper slopes.
As with all other power tools, you should read the instruction manual before use, and we recommend children, animals and any smaller objects are not present while iMOW® is mowing.
iMOW® is the effortless way to achieve a lush green lawn. For more information, click the link below.

The KMA 80 R cordless KombiEngine can be used with any KombiTool attachment, excluding the smaller STIHL FSB-KM bent shaft grass trimmer.
Some of our most popular KombiTools are the STIHL FS-KM grass trimmer attachment for mowing and clearing along walls or fences, the HL-KM hedge trimmer attachment for shaping or cutting back hedges, the STIHL BG-KM leaf blower attachment for clearing leaves and debris, the HT-KM pole pruner attachment for pruning branches or fruit trees and the FCB-KM edge trimmer attachment, for edging along paths, driveways and flower beds.

The cordless KombiEngine is fitted with a loop handle which can position the STHL KMA 80 R across the body and can be adjusted quickly thanks to the quick release system. Just release the orange clamp and move the handle to a position that best suits you.
To use the STIHL KMA 80 R battery powered KombiEngine, first choose the KombiTool you need. Simply insert the STIHL KombiTool into the shaft and tighten to secure it in place. Next, make sure to check the work area for wildlife. Then, slot in the battery – the first click is the transport position, meaning the battery is locked but not live, which is ideal for moving the tool around the garden. The second click indicates the tool is live.
The next step is to choose a speed level. Eco mode reduces the RPM to extend the run time, whereas level 2 is for maximum performance and demanding applications. In both modes the trigger allows you to vary the speed to suit the job at hand thanks to the brushless EC motor.
Once you’ve chosen your speed level, you can start using the KMA 80 R cordless KombiEngine to complete the task at hand. And when you’ve finished hedge trimming and need to switch to a different STIHL KombiTool, you can easily remove the attachment and insert another KombiTool and start working again!
As part of the STIHL AK System, the battery that powers the KMA 80 R KombiEngine can be used with any other tool in the AK System range – ranging from cordless lawn mowers to battery powered chainsaws to leaf vacuums and more. There are many combinations of battery and KombiTools to give you the working time you need with your STIHL KMA 80 R and these can all be found on our website;

It's important to wear the correct PPE when using a STIHL KombiEngine. The PPE you wear all depends on the attachment you have on the machine. These new STIHL petrol chainsaws are intended for everything from trimming branches around the garden, processing firewood and, with the larger models, felling and processing smaller trees. It’s a simple line-up where, as you move up through the range, the chainsaws rise in engine capacity and power output. The MS 162 has 30cc, MS 172 has 32cc, MS 182 has 36cc and MS 212 has 39cc, so you can choose the petrol chainsaw that best suits your needs. There are various chainsaw bar length options available from 12-inch on the STIHL MS 162 chainsaw through to 16-inch on the MS 182 and MS 212 STIHL chainsaw.
The STIHL MS 162 and MS 172 chainsaws have a traditional side-mounted chain tensioning system, whilst the C-BE versions of the MS 182 and MS 212 chainsaws have quick chain tensioning for easy, tool-free tensioning and changing of the chainsaw chain. They also have an ergo-start system which means pulling the starter cord is less strenuous. On all STIHL MS 182 and MS 212 chainsaws, you have tool-free fuel and oil caps as well as metal bumper spikes
All these STIHL petrol chainsaws have an anti-vibration system to make working with the chainsaw comfortable and to make it easier for you to control and make accurate cuts. The design of the saws is modern and functional, so they’re great to work with. They’re also lightweight and well-balanced. All the chainsaws use 3/8” Picco chainsaw chains, which are manufactured in Switzerland and give good cutting performance, good service life and are easy to sharpen, especially if you use a STIHL 2-in-1 EasyFile.
🔶 STIHL 2-in-1 EasyFile: stihl.co.uk/en/ap/easyfile-2-in-1-1733
To get the best out of your STIHL petrol chainsaw, we recommend a few useful accessories such as using STIHL MotoMix in your petrol tools. This is our premium pre-mixed ethanol-free fuel, that gives you the best performance and a long shelf life of 5 years. We also offer replacement chainsaw bars and chains separately, as well as in a handy cut kit, with two chainsaw chains and one guide bar. To keep your machine in top condition, we have the STIHL MS Care and Clean kit, which contains VarioClean ECO cleaning spray and a brush with a bar groove cleaner.
🔶 STIHL MS Care & Clean Kit: stihl.co.uk/en/ap/ms-care-clean-kit-164309
To help keep on top of maintenance, all the chainsaws in the range can also be used with a STIHL Smart Connector, which will record working times and help you carry out regular maintenance tasks at the right time.

Both battery-powered hedge trimmers are extremely lightweight, weighing 2.4kg and 2.5 kg respectively when powered by the 10.8 volt STIHL AS 2 battery. These cordless hedge trimmers have great balance which makes for effortless work, plus the battery can be removed and used in any other machine in the STIHL AS System range. The AS 2 battery can be charged to full power in 70 mins using the STIHL AL 1 charger and you can check the charge status of the battery during use by pressing the indicator button on the side of the hedge trimmer – as demonstrated in the video.
The STIHL HSA 30 cordless hedge trimmer is fitted with a 45cm double-sided, single-edged cutting blade, whereas the STIHL HSA 40 has a 50 cm double-sided, single-edged cutting blade plus an additional 25% power. Both battery hedge trimmers have a cutting capacity of 8mm and on a full charge, you’ll be able to trim for up to 50 minutes with the HSA 30 and for up to 40 minutes with the HSA 40.
To use the cordless hedge trimmers, simply push down on the safety trigger on the grip with your palm, then grip the loop handle and pull the operating trigger under the grip and you’re ready to go. Please make sure to always check for wildlife before starting work with any hedge trimmers, particularly birds during nesting season.
Additional features of these battery-powered hedge trimmers include a tip protector and laser-cut diamond-ground hardened blades, both of which come as standard on the two models. What’s more, the STIHL HSA 30 and HSA 40 hedge trimmers have a hanging eyelet so you can mount them in your shed or garage for space-saving storage.
When using petrol or battery-powered hedge trimmers, we recommend wearing goggles, gloves, and sturdy boots. No ear protection is required when using the tool as it’s so quiet.
🔶 STIHL PPE: stihl.co.uk/en/ac/personal-protective-equipment-98284
Some additional accessories available for the hedge trimmers include STIHL Superclean resin spray which helps remove sap after use and keeps the blades lubricated. We recommend spraying this on the hedge trimmer blades after each use to make sure they work smoothly and efficiently when you next go to use it. There is also the STIHL Smart Connector which records working time and recommends servicing tasks based on this in the handy STIHL Connected app.

If you have high branches that you need to prune in your garden, then look no further than the GTA 26 extension shaft. This new accessory converts your STIHL GTA 26 cordless garden pruner into a cordless pole pruner with a fixed length of 1.5 metres, providing plenty of length for pruning fruit trees, deadwood and high branches.
🔶 Using the STIHL GTA 26 Extension Shaft
To use the accessory, simply place your GTA 26 cordless pruner in the slot at the end of the extension shaft. Then, fasten and lock it into place. Lift the extension shaft up to the branch you want to prune, pull the trigger and you’re ready to go! No tools are needed to set-up the pruner and it’s quick to switch between working at height or on the ground – but make sure you check for wildlife before starting work.
The lightweight aluminium shaft and polymer housing combined with the GTA 26 pruner provides a low weight of just 2.7 kilograms, so it’s easy to control. The extension shaft also has a soft grip handle, a branch hook for removing twigs from the canopy and a bend in the shaft for better handling during use.
When using the GTA 26 extension shaft, we recommend wearing a helmet for protection when cutting above head height, goggles, gloves, and sturdy boots.
🔶 STIHL Personal Protective Equipment: stihl.co.uk/en/ac/personal-protective-equipment-98284
When not using the extension shaft, our GTA 26 holster is useful to keep the tool close at hand whilst working in the garden.

Please note that the exact number of cuts you'll get from a single battery charge will depend on a number of factors including the thickness of the timber and the sharpness of the chain. Fresher timber is also easier to cut than older wood, so we recommend cutting branches to length as soon as possible. There will also be a difference in both cutting speed and number of cuts when cutting hard woods (such as oak or beech) or soft woods (such as pine, spruce or fir). In the video above we used freshly cut sycamore.
Watch on to see how many cuts we got from one battery charge of the STIHL GTA 26 pruner. You can also view the GTA 26 battery pruner accessories below:

With a mechanical output of 1.6 kW, the FSA 200 cordless brushcutter offers a big increase in power compared to the STIHL FSA 135 and is comparable in power to an FS 361 C-M petrol clearing saw. With increased power comes a wider range of compatible cutting attachments and the ability to cut through tough material faster.
For the longest working time, we recommend the STIHL FSA 200 battery brushcutter is used with the STIHL AP 500 S, our most powerful AP System battery. The FSA 200 brushcutter comes with a GSB 260-2 grass cutting blade as standard, whilst the FSA 200 R comes with an AutoCut C 26-2 mowing head. Whilst the highly versatile AutoCut head is standard on the STIHL FSA 200 R, running STIHL PolyCut blades or metal cutting blades can help to extend the total working time per charge by up to 20%, so this is an option if you would prefer to use these instead of mowing line. Eco mode can also help to maximise battery life when trimming grass or thinner material.
A new feature on the STIHL FSA 200 R model is the quick-release clamp below the loop handle. Tools can often be shared with users of different heights, so being able to adjust the handle position without the need for tools is a big advantage.
As you’d expect from a professional STIHL brushcutter, the FSA 200 features a sturdy aluminium shaft, a hard-wearing gearbox and an IPX4-rated powerhead for use in all weather conditions. You can see the housing extends further than the battery, protecting the battery from damage if tipped. The mesh air filter also helps to cool the motor during use and is easy to clean.
The FSA 200 cordless brushcutter offers a sturdy handlebar with an AV System for low vibration and increased user comfort, plus the quick-release screw makes folding the handle easy for compact storage too. Both brushcutter models also feature an ergonomic LED display to indicate the power setting, as well as simple controls for turning the machine on and adjusting the maximum speed settings.
To keep your FSA 200 battery-powered brushcutter in top condition we recommend the STIHL FS Care and Clean kit. The standard kit contains Multispray and Superlub gear lubricant and the FS Plus Care and Clean kit contains Varioclean, Superlub gear grease and Multispray.

The first job is to get on with the pruning. There is a lot to do this month, while the plants are still dormant, but the buds are beginning to swell a little. That makes it easier to spot where to make your cuts. Prune anything from wall-trained roses to apple and pear trees, including the ones that are trained against a wall or fence.
Wisteria needs regular pruning to keep its growth and overall size under control, but it also improves the flowering display. Cut back any of the summer growth to two or three buds, and you may need to remove a few flowering spurs if they’re coming out too far away from the wall.
🔶 Pruning Roses
Pruning wall-trained roses is more difficult, especially if you’ve neglected them a bit. But if you stick to the 3 Ds then that’s a good start. Remove any obvious dead, diseased or damaged wood to begin with.
After that, you’re aiming for a nice fan shape, with strong stems that are tied in nicely to create an arching framework. Cut back the twiggy growth hard, to stubby little laterals. Finally, finish off with a nice feed and mulch or compost of manure.
🔶 Pruning Clematis
Clematis is easy to prune as long as you know what time of year your plant flowers. If you’re not sure, then keep any pruning light and take note of what time of year your Clematis flowers.
The first group are the spring bloomers like Clematis Montana and these don’t need much pruning. Wait until the last flowers have faded, in late spring or early summer, and then tidy them up by cutting back to a healthy set of buds.
Summer flowering Clematis need pruning now, and they fall into two groups – the ones that flower early in June and then again later in summer, and the ones that flower late in the season only once. These early bloomers just need a light prune, removing any dead or weak growth.
The second group flower later in the summer, after mid-June, and these include the small flowered Clematis Viticella varieties. These flower on new shoots that are produced in this growing season, so last year’s growth should be removed in late February or early March.
🔶 Preparing Your Kitchen Garden
February is the perfect time to get started on the kitchen garden. It’s still a bit early for sowing direct but there are plenty of other jobs to do like getting your beds ready. As long as the ground isn’t frozen, you can cultivate beds and start to warm up the soil, by covering it with fleece, polythene or cloches, in preparation for sowing in the coming months.
If you’re feeling active, this is a great time to build a raised bed now. The great thing about a raised bed is that it allows you to make an early start in the garden because the soil warms up faster and raised beds drain quickly too.
When it comes to planting, you can start chitting early potato varieties now. Stand them on end in a module tray or egg box and place them in a bright, cool, frost-free place.

🔶 Planting a Bee & Butterfly Border
Sometimes you just don’t get the weather for building or gardening outdoors this month, so it’s a good time for planning any changes you might want to make to your garden in the coming year. Adding a bee and butterfly border to your garden is a great way to attract wildlife and help support our pollinators.
The key thing with bee and butterfly-friendly plants is to have a long season of flowering, providing nectar and pollen galore for months. Some will go on flowering all season long – plants such as Geranium Rozanne start flowering in June and often flower into November. Wide, open flowers are easy for bees to spot and land on.
Verbena bonariensis starts later in the summer but keeps on producing masses of these little flowers. They might be small, but these tubular flowers are a great favourite of butterflies, which use their long proboscis to reach the nectar at the base of the tube.
Larger tubular flowers like Penstemon and Foxglove have a little pathway highlighted for bees to land on and creep up the flower, getting dusted with pollen as they go and then transferring that to the next flower they land on.
We hope you’ve enjoyed these gardening tips and you’re all fired up to get out in your garden this February. Don’t forget to subscribe to the STIHL GB YouTube channel for more ideas, hints and tips to help you make the most of your garden.

The KMA 120 R cordless KombiEngine can be used with any KombiTool attachment in the range, excluding the smaller STIHL FSB-KM bent shaft grass trimmer, as the Kombi powerhead is too powerful for this attachment. This means you won’t have to replace any KombiTools you may already have and it’s an easy way to move across to battery power.
Our most popular professional attachments include the STIHL FS-KM grass trimmer attachment for mowing and clearing along walls or fences, the MB-KM metal blade attachment for clearing tough grass and scrub, the STIHL HL-KM 145 adjustable hedge trimmer attachment for shaping or cutting back hedges, the BG-KM leaf blower attachment for clearing leaves and debris, the HT-KM pole pruner attachment for pruning branches or trees and the RG-KM rotary cutting head attachment, for low-spin removal of weeds and grass in paved or gravel areas.

The battery-powered KombiEngine is fitted with a loop handle which can position the STIHL KMA 120 R across the body and can be adjusted quickly thanks to the quick-release system. Simply release the orange clamp and move the handle to a position that best suits you.
To use the KMA 120 R cordless KombiEngine, first choose the KombiTool you need. Insert the KombiTool into the shaft and tighten it to secure it in place. Once this is done, check the work areas for wildlife. Then slot in the STIHL battery and choose a speed level. Eco mode reduces the RPM to extend the run time, while level 2 is for maximum performance in demanding applications. In both modes the trigger also allows you to vary the speed to suit the job at hand thanks to the brushless EC motor.
Once you’ve chosen your speed level, you can start using the STIHL KMA 120 R to complete the task at hand. When you’ve finished the task and need to switch to a different KombiTool, you can easily remove the attachment and insert another KombiTool and start working again!
As part of the STIHL AP System, the battery that powers the KMA 120 R cordless KombiEngine can be used with any other tool in the AP System range, ranging from cordless lawnmowers to battery-powered chainsaws and more. 🔶 Winter Plants
Bulbs and plants like snowdrops are pushing their way through the ground now we’re into the New Year, and they will be flowering before too long. But your garden can always do with a bit more colour and excitement. There are some fabulous winter plants that are worth a spot in every garden – and some will do well in a plant pot for a few years too. Colourful stems of Dogwoods are great – choose from bright scarlet red varieties, soft yellow or a fiery one like ‘Cardinal’.
🔶 Winter Colours and Scents
Acers like Sango-Kaku have brilliant winter stems. These are more of an investment plant, but you do get a lot of loveliness for your money, and they look great in a plant pot or in the border too.
Skimmias are great in pots and window boxes too. They’re almost indestructible and go on flowering for ages so, although they aren’t the most exciting plants, they earn their keep in the winter months. It’s the winter scents that are most appreciated as these plants are so fragrant it’s an aromatherapy lift. They’re also great for any early flying bees and other insects which is exactly why they are so scented – so their flowers can be smelt a mile away by pollinating insects.
A good choice for a low maintenance garden is a winter flowering Mahonia like Wintersweet. These are easy, evergreen shrubs with a touch of the Japanese garden about them. For a bigger space pick one of the shrubby honeysuckles like Lonicera fragrantissima. Or you could go for a winter flowering Viburnum like Dawn or Charles Lamont.
🔶 Winter Flower Maintenance
Winter flowers need maintenance just like summer ones. It’s vital to keep deadheading your Pansies and Violas through the winter to keep them flowering. It’s easy enough to pinch off the little seedpods every week or so.
And don’t forget to water potted plants if the weather is dry too. It’s so easy to think everything is wet and damp in the winter but sometimes these months can be surprisingly dry. Added to that, if the plants have very dense foliage then it’s hard for rain to penetrate.
🔶 Planting in Winter
There are also plenty of flowers that you can plant in the ground now. Smaller plants like Cyclamen and Hellebores are perfect for brightening up those odd, dull spots in the garden, making a great understorey planting for shrubs and trees, while pots of bulbs are handy for popping into any gaps that you might have.
A popular job in January is to remove the old hellebore leaves. It always looks a bit harsh doing this, but the old leaves are tired and spotty and hide the beauty of the emerging hellebore flowers. A bit of snipping now and these beautiful flowers will look their best in February and March.
🔶 Composting
Compost is such a hot topic and it’s one that gardeners can chat about for hours, whether that’s ready-made compost in bags, or how you set about making your own. Let’s start with bagged, shop bought compost. There are so many varieties available that it’s tricky to know where to start.
Bagged peat-free compost is much better than it used to be - it used to be prone to drying out, which wasn’t very good for plants and seedlings. Take a good look at the compost and try a few before you settle on a brand.
John Innes compost is very stable and useful for longer term planting as they retain their structure well and maintain a steady level of nutrient and water content. If you’re not sure what you need, then talk to the staff at your local garden centre.
Of course, making your own compost is a great option too and there are some golden rules for DIY compost.
🔶 Tips for Making Your Own Compost:
- Compost almost everything, including bedding plants, perennial stems, grass and even a few leaves but don’t compost nasty perennial weeds.
- Chop up everything into bitesize pieces as this will help them to rot down more quickly.
- Try to add things in layers like a trifle.
- Where possible, don’t compost food waste either – you want a wormery for that.
- Turn your compost heap, it helps to speed up the decomposition process – but be careful, especially in the winter, as your compost heap could be home to frogs, toads and even mice!
Making your own compost does take some time and effort but it’s by far the best stuff and is a brilliant way of recycling your garden waste.
🔶 Mulching Plants
As well as using compost for sowing and growing, it makes a great mulch for the garden.

🔶 Making a Christmas Wreath
There is so much that you can harvest from the garden to add to your Christmas decorations. Of course, the classic options are Holly and Ivy, and you can use these to dress up pictures and window frames, but there are so many other plants that you can use in interesting ways.
At Christmas, simply anything with berries is a must-have – Holly, Cotoneaster, and especially Pyracantha are great to dot around. Evergreens of any sort are great for decorations so things like Christmas box are perfect for table settings, laurels and even good old conifers are useful for bulking up bigger arrangements. And don’t forget fragrant evergreen herbs like Rosemary and Bay tree branches.
Dried stems of grasses, hydrangeas and even tough flower heads like Verbenas are great for decorations.
Once you’ve gathered all your foliage, you might fancy making a wreath which you can either hang on your door or use as a table centre decoration. You can add moss and foliage to a wreath ring, wrapping it with florist’s wire to hold it firm. Alternatively, you could recycle a ring from a previous year. Once you have a base layer of evergreens built up, then add the highlight foliage like variegated holly, some Euonymus of some lovely fragrant Rosemary. Next, add flower heads, grasses, and other elements like fruits and finish off with any baubles, pinecones, cinnamon sticks and a ribbon or two.
🔶 Top Dressing Alpines
Now we’re into the winter, potted alpines will benefit from a top dress of fresh gravel to keep them well-drained, especially where the plant meets the soil. Alpines hate getting too wet so this will help.
🔶 Winterising Cannas and Dahlias
Now that things like Cannas and Dahlias have succumbed to the cold weather it’s time to lift them to store the tubers for winter. Just clean them off and pot them into fresh compost, keeping them dry for the winter in the shed. If you have a very sheltered garden, you can get away with just mulching them with straw or leaf mould, but it can be risky.
Some plants are borderline hardy when it comes to surviving through the winter, so a little mulch will help these along. Move potted Agapanthus closer to the warm wall of the house and add a bit of straw in the crown to just give it a bit of extra protection. Remember when you’re mulching to be generous – it needs to be a couple of inches or five centimetres thick to make a difference. Use straw, bark, gravel or garden compost and don’t be afraid to mulch even hardy plants if your garden is very cold and prone to frosts.
🔶 Planting Bare Root Trees
These winter months are the best time for planting shrubs and trees. These are long-term plants that need time to settle into the ground and put down their roots.
Because these tend to be the taller plants in the garden as a rule – the big trees and shrubs or climbing and rambling roses - they need strong root systems to anchor them and a good root system to feed them too.
The great thing about bare root plants is that you get a lot of plant for your money – a container plant that costs the same amount is way smaller than bare root plants and that’s because the one in a pot needs so much more care from the growers.
Bare root plants are lifted in the dormant winter season, which gives you a bit of time before you need to worry about getting them in a permanent home. That extra time is especially helpful if you’re planting a great long hedge, with hundreds of plants to get in.
Bare root plants are great because they are so much more substantial, so you get an immediate impact in the garden. They look so much more natural than containerised plants as they have that hard-grown, wind-blown look that makes it look as if it’s been there for ages.
🔶 Wildlife Watch
Creating a log pile in your garden is a great way to provide a home for wildlife. In the video, Jane takes a look at one she made a couple of months ago to see what wildlife has made a home here.
Well, that’s it for this month, hopefully you’ve enjoyed these winter projects and don’t forget to subscribe to the STIHL GB YouTube channel for more ideas, hints and tips to help you make the most of your garden.

🔶 Making Leaf Mould
Collecting leaves in an important job, even though it’s a constant task as they seem to be falling forever. But the colours are beautiful!
Leaves have a use as well as being pretty, in that you can collect and compost them to make leaf mould. It doesn’t sound great but it is – rich and dense and just perfect for top dressing around plants or adding to shop bought compost for your plant pots next season. These leaves will take a while to decompose, so it’s a good idea to put the bags in a corner and forget about them. Alternatively, you can add leaves to your compost bin too, as long as it’s not too many at one go.
🔶 Making A Log Pile for Wildlife
This time of year is especially hard for wildlife, and the chances are it’s only going to get tougher, so take a bit of time now to create some new habitats. A log pile is about the easiest shelter to make, and it doesn’t need any tools or special equipment. All you need is a quiet corner of the garden, and some good-sized logs from deciduous trees rather than conifers. These will provide homes for all sorts of spiders, beetles, and insects, as well as larger creatures like mice and toads too. If you want to make it more elaborate then you can create a bug hotel with layers of cardboard, straw, tiles and so on but a log pile is perfect for my little space.
🔶 Tulip Bulbs
It’s sad, but all the bedding plants have faded now, so it’s time to plan ahead for next season! Tulips are brilliantly showy, and they’ll light up the garden from late spring into early summer. The only problem with them is that they’re not as tough as daffodils, they're less likely to come back and they’re more likely to get tulip blight and fade away.
Always use fresh compost when you’re planting in pots and look at the bulbs carefully before planting, throwing away any that look soft or diseased.
🔶 Planting A Winter Window Box
Refreshing a window box is easy enough to do without spending much money.
A popular choice is to use seasonal specials to give it a bit of colour over the winter. Try using plants like hellebores and ivies and plan to refresh your window box again in spring.
🔶 Growing Garlic
The main thing going on in the kitchen garden bed is clearing up, getting rid of all the finished plants. But, once it’s cleared, November is the perfect time to plant garlic, shallots, onions, and broad beans.
Garlic is also super easy to grow, as it grows from the cloves rather than from seed, and it doesn’t need any fuss. In fact, it’s best planted in the autumn, when the cold period through winter helps it to form a good-sized bulb the following year.
Break up the bulbs carefully and make sure you buy garlic bulbs from the garden centre or nursery rather than using sprouted supermarket garlic bulbs. These aren’t disease resistant like garden centre bulbs, and they might also be treated with an inhibitor to stop the bulbs sprouting in your veg rack.
Space the cloves fifteen centimetres or six inches apart, with the point about two and a half centimetres or one inch below the surface. Cover them up with a layer of fleece until they’re nicely rooted and they will be ready to harvest in late spring or early summer next year.
🔶Protecting Pots
A handful of horticultural fleece is also very useful for protecting all sorts of plants from frost and cold in the winter. Things like hessian, fleece and bubble wrap are great for wrapping pots, this protects the roots of tender plants (and the pot too) from frost. Don’t forget to turn off and drain down your outside tap too, and then protect it and any pipes from freezing.
🔶 Protecting Pots
You might think it’s the snow and frost that are the real killers for garden birds in winter, but the never-ending rain and short winter days that reduce their options for foraging are just as lethal.
Start putting out food for the birds now to help them stay healthy, but make sure your feeders and bird table are clean and scrubbed so as not to spread disease. Birds need high calorie content foods to help them through the winter so suet balls, insect and fruit cakes, an all-year-round seed mix, and even kitchen scraps like crumbled pastry and grated cheese will all be very welcome.
There’s always more to do in the garden, but that’s our round up of tips for November. Hopefully you’ve got some ideas. Do let us know what you’re up to in the comments, and don’t forget to subscribe to the STIHL GB YouTube channel for more ideas in December.

We recommend using the AK 20 battery with the STIHL RMA 239 cordless lawn mower. What’s more, this same battery can be used in all the other tools in the STIHL AK System range. Simply swap the STIHL AK battery into the other tools and you can work your way around the garden doing many different tasks.
🔶 STIHL AK 20 Battery: stihl.co.uk/en/ap/ak-20-battery-164033
The STIHL RMA 239 C cordless mower boasts some smart features, including the mono-comfort handlebar. This makes accessing and emptying the grass box simpler and easier compared to a conventional lawn mower as the handlebar folds away neatly for space saving storage in your shed or garage. You can adjust the height of the handlebar without tools too and the height of the mowing deck is easily adjusted, using this lever.
Another key feature of the RMA 239 C battery powered lawn mower is that the flow-optimised blade makes the grass stand upright ready to be cut and then the airflow blows the cuttings into the grass catcher box, which holds up to 40 litres of grass.
This cordless lawn mower comes with a grass catcher box that has vents on its side that face downwards. This means you won’t get covered in dirt and dust when mowing. And it’s easy to spot when the box is getting full on the RMA 239 cordless mower too, thanks to the grass level indicator. When the indicator is down, it means the box is full – so you then know to empty the lawnmower. Emptying it is a breeze too, as the box can be opened, just like a clam-shell.
The STIHL RMA 239 C mower can be converted into a mulch mower with a mulching accessory kit. This is a great way of achieving a lush lawn without having to use lawn fertiliser with the added bonus of not having to get rid of your grass cuttings.
For an average sized lawn, you should only need one fully charged battery to get the job done. It’s simple to keep an eye on how much battery charge you have with these four LEDs. Once the charge has run down, simply pop the battery on the charger and it will be up to 80% capacity in around an hour and a half, and 100% after a further hour.
Don’t forget to check for wildlife in your working area before you start mowing though.
The STIHL RMA 239 C cordless mower is a great option to keep your lawn in check quickly and easily. Find out more at stihl.co.uk or your nearest STIHL Approved Dealer.

🔶 Autumn Favourites
You might think that October is all about autumn colour, falling leaves and things drawing to a close as the nights get earlier and darker. And of course, it is, but it’s always surprising how many plants keep on flowering for as long as they can. This is a great time for planting with the soil nice and warm and damp, as long as it stays mild and not frosty. Grasses and ferns really come into their own as herbaceous plants die back.
🔶 Shrubs
Autumn is the perfect time of year to plant shrubs and there are so many lovely ones to grow. For wildlife value, try to find a spot for a fruiting shrub like Cotoneaster as birds love the red berries. You might prefer the brilliant purple berries of Callicarpa or Beautyberry is its common name. This is a bit of a love it or loathe it plant and the birds love it. It’s interesting because the birds will leave berries until all the red and orange ones have gone, which means you can enjoy them on the plant for longer.
🔶 Autumn Flowers
It’s not all just foliage, there are still a surprising array of flowers to enjoy. Sedum, Verbena and Asters still look fresh as a daisy! These plants are the late stars of the garden, but the trick is to make sure that they get their moment in the spotlight. That means some selective cutting back of surrounding plants.
October is usually spent cutting plants back and tidying up for the winter ahead, but times have changed in the past few years. Nowadays, modern practice is to leave your garden be in the autumn, leaving the plants to set seed and die back naturally as the colder weather sets in. This technique is brilliant for wildlife like small birds that can creep about among the stems, pecking up the seeds. It’s also great for many insects that can use hollow herbaceous stems to shelter in.
🔶 Weeding
Autumn is the best time to for weeding. For persistent weeds, the best way to get rid of them around plants is simply to dig them out. Rooty weeds like Bindweed and Enchanter’s Nightshade will sprout into growth swiftly next spring so tackling them now, when they’re not growing will give your garden plants a head start in the spring. It’s a constant battle to keep them at bay but roots are easy to spot and to trace back through the soil!
Annual weeds like Willowherb or Epilobium, and things like Petty Spurge and Bittercress, are nowhere near as much of a problem. They seed freely and pop up all over the place but they’re easy enough to pull out as they appear.
🔶 Bulbs
We’re now well into daffodil planting season but hold on to your tulip bulbs for a bit longer. It’s a good idea to buy them now though, as some varieties sell out very quickly. Tulips need to go in once we start to get the colder temperatures, November really, but daffodils and other bulbs like Anemone corms and dwarf Irises can be planted throughout October.
It’s popular amongst gardeners to plant little bulbs in pots. Whilst bulbs such as dwarf daffodils, Anemones and Irises are often planted in old terracotta pots, bowls and all sorts of garden containers! All these bulbs will give you a succession of flowers that you can dot around to brighten up your garden next spring.
🔶 Planting Bulbs
Little bulbs make great garden plants too, adding a welcome splash of colour and catching the spring sunshine especially well. They look good in the garden border and will grow well under trees and shrubs, brightening the border beautifully while the trees and shrubs are lacking leaves. Whilst bigger plants are bare of leaves in the early spring, the bulbs can get all the sun they need to bring them into flower.
To make the planting look natural scatter the bulbs over the area and then plant them where they land, making sure you plant them at three times their depth. If you’re naturalising bulbs in your lawn, you can do the same, or you can lift a section of turf and plant a handful of bulbs underneath.
There’s no limit to what you can do with bulbs - they also look great in raised beds, where you can see the flowers more closely, and in rock gardens too. If you’re not sure what to do with them then plant them in pots as they can always go into the ground later.
There’s always more to do in the garden, but that’s our round up of tips for October. Hopefully you’ve got some ideas. Do let us know what you’re up to in the comments, and don’t forget to subscribe to the STIHL GB YouTube channel for more ideas in November.

🔶 Late Flowers
Although the nights are starting to draw in, there’s a lot going on in the garden in September, especially when it comes to late flowers and the wildlife that feed on them.
🔶 Butterfly Plants
Both Aster and Sedum plants are brilliant butterfly plants, and this is the month that you might spot lots of moths and butterflies in the garden, and that’s because the weather is warm and time is running out for them to mate, plus there is so much late nectar about to feed them.
The common butterflies you’ll see in your garden are the White butterflies, the Small White and the Large White, collectively known as Cabbage Whites.
You might see a Speckled Wood in a shadier spot but it’s the showier butterflies like the beautifully named Painted Lady that you can’t miss. If you haven’t had much buzzing and fluttering going on, then plant a few butterfly magnet plants like Scabious, which will flower all summer long, or a Buddleia which will pull in the later flying, glamorous butterflies like Red Admirals and Peacocks.
🔶 Wildflower Planting
Wildflower planting is a good way to fill in the space in your garden – the wildflower mix shown in the video includes Marigolds and Malope. Even though Malope isn’t native to this country, it’s still a brilliant plant for bees and has a long flowering season which makes it good value in the garden, and it’s easy to grow which makes it a winner for all gardeners.
🔶 Collecting Seeds
September is also a brilliant month to start planning and looking forward to next year. Doing the groundwork now will pay dividends for the spring and summer to come.
To start off, collect some seeds as lots of plants have finished flowering. Collecting your own seeds is a brilliant way to save money but it’s also very satisfying, enjoying that whole cycle of life from seed to plants and back to seed again. There is also the fact that if a plant has done well in your garden, then it’s genetically predisposed to do well again.
Plants like Hesperis, Honesty, Marigolds and Foxgloves all produce masses of seeds and they’re easy to grow from seed too. You can let them seed about or give the seedheads a shake roughly where you want the seeds to be.
🔶 Saving Seeds
If you want to collect them to sow yourself, then pick a dry day, snip off the pods and seedheads, and then let them dry on a saucer or piece of paper to collect the tiny seeds. And if you want to store the seeds, make sure they are thoroughly dry, then put them in envelopes or paper bags - not plastic bags, though, as the seeds could go mouldy.
🔶 Planting Daffodil Bulbs
September is the start of bulb planting season, going right the way through to November. Bulbs contain all the promise of spring in one little, papery blob. Daffodils and Narcissi are the first bulbs to get in the ground or into plant pots, and they’re the best value too, as they will keep on flowering year after year. They’re also very forgiving of soil and situation and will grow happily even in part shade.
The crucial thing to remember is to plant them three times their depth, in holes about 3 inches or 7 centimetres apart. If you’re planting in pots, you can plant much closer, butting the bulbs up against one another for a nice full pot.
Daffodils and Narcissi have an incredibly long season and some varieties will flower as early as February, with other varieties looking their best in late April. And all of them make great potted Christmas presents for gardening friends and family.
🔶 Pruning A Climbing Rose
Cutting back around the garden, especially the edges – the shrubs, climbers and hedges - can be an absolute must this month as the garden has a final flurry of growing. And it’s a good time to do it as most of the birds will have finished nesting this late in the season. You’d be surprised how late Blackbirds and Thrushes can nest, though, so remember to have a quick check before you trim.
There’s always more to do in the garden, but that’s our round up of tips for September. Hopefully you’ve got some ideas. Do let us know what you’re up to in the comments, and don’t forget to subscribe to the STIHL GB YouTube channel for more ideas in October.

The STIHL SHA 56 is a 2 in 1 tool, so it can be used as a standard cordless leaf blower to clear paths, patios and leaves from the lawn, and we recommend blowing leaves into a corner to make them easier to collect.
When used as battery-powered leaf blower, it’s well balanced and the variable speed control lets you vary the power with the trigger, plus it has an adjustable blower tube length to suit your height. Once you’ve finished using it as a leaf blower, it’s then very easy to turn the machine into a cordless vacuum shredder, without tools.
🔶 How to convert the SHA 56 from a blower to a vacuum shredder
🔶 First remove the blower tube.
🔶 Open the grille and put on the vacuum tube.
🔶 Put on the collection bag and attach it to the vacuum tube using the hooks highlighted in the video.
🔶 Then rotate the handle round 180 degrees.
🔶 You can also add the carry straps which are optional, but it does make it easier to handle.
The tool is now ready to be used as a vacuum shredder. It’s very simple to operate in this mode and well balanced overall. Leaves are drawn up the shaped vacuum tube via a shredder impellor into the 40-litre catcher bag. Leaves are shredded up as they pass the impellor so a large pile of leaves is reduced down to a much smaller volume. If there’s any blockages in the battery-powered shredder, there’s easy access to clear it and we recommend taking a steady approach, especially with wet leaves to minimise the chance of this happening. Once the collection bag is full, it’s simple to empty with the full-length zipper.
As a cordless vacuum shredder, it weighs 4.2 kg without the battery, and 3.2 kg as a leaf blower. The working time with the STIHL AK 20 battery is approximately 25 minutes, depending on the material being shredded.
When using the STIHL SHA 56, ensure you wear the correct Personal Protective Equipment. We recommend wearing eye protection, work gloves, snug fitting clothes and sturdy footwear. The SHA 56 is quiet in operation so no ear defenders are required.
For more information on the SHA 56 cordless vacuum shredder and blower, visit stihl.co.uk or your nearest STIHL approved dealer.

Firstly, try to take advantage of rainy weather by putting houseplants outside for some fresh air, or if it’s raining, a good wash and a drink, too.
🔶 Watering Plant Pots
Watering plant pots is one of the most important jobs through the summer, especially when you’re growing plants in garden containers. It doesn’t matter what they are; vegetables, fruit, or flowers, they all rely on you to keep them watered through the summer.
The key thing with watering plant pots is to make sure the plants get a good drink, so water thoroughly. It’s good practice to water a plant once, then go back to it later to give it another soak.
🔶 Five Top Watering Tips
1. Water early in the morning, or late in the evening so the sun doesn’t just burn all that moisture away. Watering in the evening means that the plants have all night to take up that valuable water. If you have a lot of plant pots or a newly planted garden, it might make sense to invest in an automatic system. They’re brilliant if you’re going on holiday, and drip or trickle systems are often exempt from hosepipe bans.
2. Collect water where you can in water butts or use grey water from washing up. Don’t worry about it having detergent in as it will help the compost to absorb the water.
3. Use mulch on your garden borders and veg plots to help retain moisture. This is a layer of material, at least 5cm (2in) thick, applied to the soil whilst its wet. Mulches improve plant growth by adding nutrients or increasing organic matter content, as well as reducing water loss from the soil. But even decorative mulches, like chipped bark and gravel, serve a purpose by suppressing weeds and protecting the soil from drying out.
4. It also makes sense to plant wisely, using drought tolerant plants. This is especially important as our summers are getting hotter. A lot of great plants cope with dry conditions – lots of grasses, herbs like Lavender and Catmint, and Salvias are so easy to grow and flower all summer long.
5. It’s also a good idea to move plant pots into the shade to try to protect them. It’s such an easy thing to do but it makes a huge difference to the plants.
🔶 Cuttings
High summer is a brilliant time to take cuttings of lots of favourite plants. It’s great to have plants for free, and replacements for plants that die. If you’re new to taking cuttings, don’t worry, it’s so easy that you can take lots. Follow the steps below:
- Choose healthy, strong, non-flowering shoots. These should root quickly and soon grow into new plants.
- Remove a few likely looking shoots, but make sure they’re longer than the finished cutting. Cut them just above a leaf on the parent plant.
- Aim to take a cutting not more than 10cm long.
- Use a sharp knife to cut just below a leaf joint, then remove the leaves from the bottom half of the cutting.
- If your cutting has large leaves, then you should reduce the leaf area by half to minimise water loss. However, with smaller leaves there’s no need.
- Rooting compound does help to speed up the process, but it isn’t essential. If you use it, dip the base of the cutting in the powder, and tap off any excess.
- Insert cuttings into small plant pots of moist compost, keeping lower leaves just above compost level and use a dibber or pencil to make a hole for the cuttings.
- Cover the cuttings with a plastic bag and tie it securely.
- Place your cuttings in a warm position, out of direct sun, to root. Don’t forget to take the poly bag off every day, shaking out any moisture inside to stop it getting too steamy which might lead to rot.
- It will take about 4 to 6 weeks for your cuttings to root. The top often starts to grow before the roots have formed, so don’t get carried away until you’re sure they have rooted!
🔶 Wildlife Watch
It’s so tempting to cut back all the plants that have finished flowering, but these seeds are brilliant for birds. As the days shorten, a plant’s natural reaction is to try to set seed and it is a good idea to let some of them do just that. Things like Lavender, Verbena, and Globe thistles will all provide food for birds and small mammals like mice.

It's important to wear the correct PPE while using a STIHL grass trimmer. Face protection and eye protection is necessary to protect you from rocks or debris flicked up by the mowing line. Ear protection is also required for all petrol STIHL tools. However, if you’d like to avoid wearing ear defenders, we recommend choosing a STIHL cordless grass trimmer or brushcutter instead.
Starting the STIHL FS 38 or FS 40 is easy. Simply place the grass trimmer on a flat surface, lock the throttle lever, press the choke lever, prime the carburettor and pull the starter cord. The round handle is comfortable to hold and helps the STIHL grass trimmer to sit across the user’s body. In the position highlighted in the video, it can be used to trim the grass while walking forward, allowing lawn edges to be trimmed with minimal effort.
The curved shaft helps to bring the cutting head closer to the user, improving control and accuracy when trimming around flower beds and fences. Since there’s no gearbox, the shaft is also much lighter compared to straight shaft models too.
The STIHL FS 38 and FS 40 grass trimmers both come as standard with the STIHL AutoCut C 6-2 mowing head. Should the line get worn, re-extending the line can be done quickly by simply bumping the head on the ground with the trigger pulled. The blade will then cut the line to length automatically, allowing you to carry on working with minimal disruption.
🔶 Learn how to reload the line on an AutoCut C 6-2 here: youtu.be/-oJvXv7fnDI
For tougher grass or patches of brambles, why not try out the STIHL PolyCut 6-2 mowing head? Instead of mowing line, PolyCut mowing heads use polymer blades capable of cutting through thicker material.
If your STIHL grass trimmer is only used occasionally, we recommend fuelling with our pre-mixed alkylate fuel Motomix. STIHL MotoMix is ethanol free and has a significantly longer shelf life than standard forecourt fuel, meaning it can be left in the tank for long periods without the risk of damaging the carburettor.

🔶 Pruning Fruit Trees
Lots of plants need a quick trim in summer to keep them in order. It’s a good time to contain the rampant nature of climbers like Wisteria. Trained fruit trees, like Jane's espalier apple tree, also need a summer prune to keep them in shape and let the light get to the fruit.
Don't delay pruning trained fruit trees, such as apple or pear trees, in summer. Those that are restricted into a certain shape need a light trim to help them keep their shape and to stop the tree putting all its effort into new leafy growth, when you want it to be concentrating on growing apples. This pruning also lets the sun get to the fruits so they can ripen nicely, and, while you’re at it thin the apples or pears to two fruits per cluster, so they get nice and big.
🔶 Pruning Trees
It’s also a good time to do a spot of light pruning on other trees in your garden. Cherries, plums and all their relations are prone to a fungal disease called silver leaf, which means that winter pruning isn’t a good idea.
🔶 Pruning Wisteria
Wisteria needs regular pruning to keep its growth and size under control, otherwise it will be off around the drainpipe, up under roof tiles and in the gutter. But regular pruning, including a quick summer tidy up, also improves the flowering enormously. Although it seems complicated, wisteria pruning is quite simple especially the summer pruning which is as straightforward as can be. Simply snip off trailing stems, back to a stub of a few buds. This will tidy it up and, like the apple tree, makes sure that all the energy goes into creating more flowers rather than taking over next doors roof!
🔶 Wildflowers
Lawns in city gardens are often difficult to maintain, you’ll find they never look happy! Paving straight on to the soil, so the wildflower plants have room to grow in between, is a great alternative to an unhappy lawn. It’s also a brilliant way to manage water in a city garden. Heavy rain can soak away into the ground easily rather than running off the top. Not only does this type of paving or hard surface reduce the chance of any flooding issues, but it also means the moisture is permeating the soil and is available for all the plants around.
If you use permeable paving as demonstrated in the video, or keep hard paved areas to a minimum, it can really help to prevent surface water flooding in your neighbourhood, especially if you live in a town or city.
🔶 Deadheading Flowers
Deadheading flowers as they go over is essential to keep the show going and to keep plants looking attractive and encourage even more blooms. Bedding plants and repeat-flowering perennials need to be prevented from setting seed to make sure they keep on flowering. Nip off the finished flowers from all your bedding plants, like Pelargoniums, Petunias and Cosmos. They will keep on flowering as they’re desperate to set seed so they can reproduce themselves – so don’t let them! The more you deadhead, the more flowers you will get, it’s that simple. You can even deadhead some perennials like Lupins, Delphiniums and these Sanguisorbas, but it’s repeat flowering Roses that really need regular deadheading.
🔶 Companion Planting
At this time of year, caterpillars can quickly take over your vegetable patch, and they can reduce your vegetables to shreds in days. If you have a bigger vegetable plot, it’s worth covering them with fine mesh netting which will keep the butterflies out and stop them laying their eggs on the cabbages. But it’s amazing how determined the butterflies can be! Planting nasturtiums nearby is a great way to distract them from your veg. White butterflies often lay their eggs on nasturtium leaves and when the caterpillars hatch and feed, they naturally then choose nasturtiums for their own offspring, taking the focus away from your cabbages.
You might have heard of companion planting. It really does help to protect your plants, although there’s not really any scientific proof as such. But whitefly hate the pungent smell that French marigolds give off, so that makes them ideal for planting near cabbages, tomatoes, kale and anything else that’s prone to whitefly.
🔶 Potatoes
One of my favourite summer jobs is to dig up early potatoes. You must be thorough though as it’s so easy to miss some. Perfect for potato salad!
