Glenelg River canoe trip - Swift Cruiser 16.8 Amy Outdoors 2023-06-22 | Chris (@FreedomOnFoot) and I head off on a 4 day adventure, paddling along the Glenelg River in south-west Victoria. This is another journey in Roo, my Swift Cruiser 16.8 Pack... it rained a lot, but it was otherwise perfect paddling conditions. Another beautiful part of Australia, I highly recommend exploring it for yourself sometime soon! Swift Cruiser 16.8 solo paddle in FLOODED Chowilla Game Reserve Amy Outdoors 2023-05-19 | This is also my first canoe camp in my new Swift Cruiser 16.8 pack canoe, now known as Roo (she is a big red after all 🦘). A flooding river means easy access into the floodplain, but it threw me a few hurdles as I made my way out of the backwaters and onto the river again. The flooding Murray also meant the bird life was amazing and the floodplain trees looked so healthy... it was such a joy to experience this unique ecosystem along the Murray River on my own only a month after the peak of the flood had passed.

Days 1-3 of my 4½ month expedition on the Murray River.I finally launch! After 2 years of planning and waiting, the day is here and I'm on the river... at last! I had never seen this end of the river, and had no idea what to expect. I'd heard tales of rapids and very shallow sections that needed navigating, of deadly strainer traps and fast currents. Needless to say, I was quite nervous about what lay ahead for me and my fully-loaded canoe. I was fortunate enough to take off with absolutely perfect water levels on the day, so my fast passage down to Lake Hume was great fun, and nowhere near as dangerous as it could have been with more or less water in the river.Day one was a hoot with sunshine and a few fluffy white clouds, before the weather set in on the second day, putting a bit of a dampener on things. Section 8 begins and I've never launched so quickly in my life before! After calling the lockmaster and assuring him I'd be in the lock by 4.30pm, I put in at the Blanchetown boat ramp and paddled like blazes to get to the lock in time so I could maintain my continuous path down the river. I made it... just! The colour of the golden limestone cliffs in the last light of day are just magnificent as I paddle by looking for a campsite, even in the rain. I find a suitable patch of riverbank, pitch the tent, and settle in to prepare my inaugural campfire pizza... After a night at one of the noisiest campsites I've ever stayed at (furry and feathered visitors in the night followed by a choir of birds in the morning) I still managed a good nights sleep, and it's amazing how sleep and a sunny day can boost morale! Travelling past Caudo Winery, a plethora of weekend campers and more sandy cliffs... Campfire recipe ~ Nachos on a roast potato Amy Outdoors 2020-08-18 | Campfire cooking even the kids can do! I've cooked this recipe 4 days into a canoe camping trip with excellent results. Obviously if you have access to refrigeration then sour cream and guacamole are a great addition too. It's a short paddle to my take-out today, so everything's been slowed down to make the most of it. This is the last day of section 4. Day 10 of 30 ~ Aussie solo canoe camping ~ section-paddling the Murray River Amy Outdoors 2020-08-03 | Moorook South to Cobdogla... It starts with a -3°C morning and a spectacular sunrise... and although the weather didn't promise a great day for paddling it did turn out that way in the end - just the thing to lift my spirits!This is the fourth day of section 4. Day 9 of 30 ~ Aussie solo canoe camping ~ section-paddling the Murray River Amy Outdoors 2020-07-29 | Loxton to Moorook South... This is a stretch of river that is completely new to me. The third day of section 4 includes some beautiful weather and lovely scenery... and a distinct lack of mojo for paddling - the third day doldrums have hit! Day 8 of 30 ~ Aussie solo canoe camping ~ section-paddling the Murray River Amy Outdoors 2020-07-26 | Lock 4 to Loxton... The second day of section 4... and its a long one! Leaving from just below lock 4 I come across a native Australian water rat (Rakali), make my way past a hoard of car campers, pass the town of Loxton and finally find a camp on the confluence of Katarapko Creek and the river.Another day on and by the river as part of my canoe trip of the lower 637km of the Murray River!Day 8... 512km - 482km*NB. km reference above is counting down along the river from the border at kilometre mark 637 to the sea at 0km.
Day 7 of 30 ~ Aussie solo canoe camping ~ section-paddling the Murray River Amy Outdoors 2020-07-21 | Berri to Lock 4... Perfect paddling weather, a long weekend and a lockage. This is the first day of section 4... a 5 day/4 night trip starting at Martin's Bend in Berri. Day 6 of 30 ~ Aussie solo canoe camping ~ section-paddling the Murray River Amy Outdoors 2020-07-12 | Lyrup to Berri... The start and end of Section 3! Day 5 of 30 ~ Aussie solo canoe camping ~ section-paddling the Murray River Amy Outdoors 2020-07-08 | Renmark South to Lyrup... A windy night is followed by a cold, windy day and makes for a challenging paddle. This is a beautiful section of the river that i have paddled many times before ... in much nicer circumstances. Unfortunately, i just couldn't find my groove this day and I didn't take much video - only making a few vids when I could find a bit of a reprieve from the wind... hopefully I captured enough of the day to give you the general idea though! I'll definitely come back and do another trip along here in better weather, so watch out for that video one day. Today I take off from the old Tower Tavern site on the upstream side of Renmark.
