Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedxSongs of the Lake and the Forest: A Michigan Folk History | Jonathan Gabhart | TEDxMacatawaTEDx Talks | In the 19th century, while the lumber and mining trades prospered in Michigan, so did the folk tradition. That’s owed mainly to the workers themselves, who, after a hard winter spent felling trees, or a dangerous voyage in a freighter filled with far too much iron ore, turned that pain and adventure into music. These very songs — and many songs like them — were sung throughout the Great Lakes region for decades, yet, in spite of their popularity, were rarely written down. They might have been lost for good, but for the work of a young song collector by the name of Alan Lomax. In 1938 the Library of Congress sent Lomax through Michigan and Wisconsin for the sole purpose of documenting the folk tradition there. The trip yielded impressive results: after three months of travel, interviews, and recording sessions, Lomax returned home with hundreds of vinyl field recordings, photographs, and even a few black-and-white video clips. All together, they compose the largest single collection of the folk music and storytelling tradition from Michigan‘s early statehood. Over the past 5 years, Michigan–IO has been re-imaginging and re-arranging these great songs in a sound and style that rings true with the spirit of the original songs as well as our contemporary ears. Michigan–IO exists to give voice to these incredible tunes and celebrate the folk music tradition throughout the Great Lakes. Through times of war and uncertainty, we have managed to pull off great feats of engineering and science in short amounts of time, although with the urgency of war and disregard for barriers that wouldn't be broken for any other case. Using this kind of method, it's time to decide whether its usage would be best for future generations since it would take care of large problems in relatively short amounts of time, although requiring global cooperation and possibly compromising both a country's and a person's sovereignty. Andres Alvarez is a current senior at the American School of Guatemala. In this talk, Danny 'Craft-D' Carlo explores the crossovers between rap and poetry as technical artforms and crucial outlets for self-expression, making the argument that rap music should be studied in schools. He has always had a deep interest in both contemporary hip-hip and traditional page poetry. Delving into the ancient and modern history of the artform he asks why rap is currently ignored by the academic establishment. How rap and poetry can create important connections and be a tool for self-expression, particularly for the young people he has worked with. He makes the case for the crucial social and cultural role that modern rap has in our society, how race and class play a part in what is lauded as 'genius', and uses engaging examples to explore the technical and emotional components that connect rap and poetry together. He finishes with an excerpt from his performance piece 'This Is Hip-Hop, This Is Poetry'.

Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedxHow poor land management contributes to flooding | Fezile Mhlanga | TEDxGwamileStreetTEDx Talks | As the world grapples with record breaking floods annually, it is paramount to find sustainable solutions to deal with these disasters. In her talk, Fezile offers the audience an alternative lens from which to view floods. Drawing from her ecological background, she argues that floods have more to do with improper land use management than we are led to believe. Fezile is a young and vibrant Ecologist who is passionate about all things nature. She is fascinated by soil and the intricate relationship which all life forms have with the soil. It is this reason which prompts her to actively advocate for soil rehabilitation. Fezile believes a significant cause of the ecological crisis we witness today, stems from our divergence from our biological way of life. She therefore centers most of her advocacy around rewilding, not just nature but rewilding ourselves as well. She is also passionate about sharing scientific research through storytelling in order to make it accessible for citizens who have been marginalized and oppressed. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedxSolitude is not loneliness | Aliselihle Tfwala | TEDxGwamileStreetTEDx Talks | Solitude is a phenomenon that has been disregarded as a pivotal element needed to promote personal growth in an individual, it is no surprise however considering how today's vastly tech driven culture accentuates on having an improved social life and being surrounded with friends. Though it is good to have a social life which is a source of self-esteem for others the constant emphasis on the importance of socialization has shunned the salience of the importance of solitude in individuals today to a point where those who actually live a life of solitary are perceived as deviants and regarded as "weird", an outturn of the misconception of solitude being loneliness. Truth be told no one wants to be perceived as an outcast in society hence the fear of solitude is introduced as well as the all so famous concept of fitting in. Fitting in has become a must in an individual's life and usually the cost of it is deserting one's true identity for an image composed merely of people's viewpoints on who you are supposed to be in order to fit the standards of society. Solitude is in that way neglected and so is the chance to grow wholly as an individual . That is why we sometimes hear some people talking of going on retreats to " find" themselves, reason being some of them have been caught up in the fear of solitude and the desire to fit in in such a way that they feel they have lost themselves trying to reach social standards or rather trying to please people around them to avoid aloneness. Don't you think we would all become a stronger society if we would allow personal growth in solitary by not perceiving solitude as loneliness but rather as a way to reflect on oneself and expressing personal creativity without the pressures of social standards and expectations of society. Such alteration of perception would be of benefit as we would have societies built of people with strong self awareness who share their personal creativity amongst themselves and people who live according to their own values and standards that others can learn and instill in their own lives other than people who live according to what is popular at that time and people who live to avoid being perceived as pariahs due to the thought of solitude being loneliness. This howbeit is not to imply that everyone should live alone without any form of company but to encourage people to not fear solitude to an extent that they force themselves to fit in a crowd and encourage people to take a break from their busy social life to self reflect in solitude. Sedulous and creative, Aliselihle Tfwala is a 15-year old teenager. She is one of the directors of a rapidly growing company that promotes sustainable brands here in Eswatini. Her fervor for art has rendered her endowed in a number of aspects of it. These include music, drawing and poetry. According to her perception of it, story telling is more than involvement of talking and listening but it is rather the involvement of words with sentimental worth in one's life to paint a vivid picture in another's mind. Through storytelling life changing ideas are shared in a way that renders them fully comprehended so that they can be effectively implemented. It is for that reason, she values story telling as a platform to spread pivotal ideas.
Dana Alina is an astrophysicist. She actively uses the capabilities of artificial intelligence in her work, mainly because there is a huge amount of data that needs to be processed effectively in astronomy and astrophysics. Dana is interested in the role of magnetic fields in star formation. Her research, among other things, requires the efficient detection of filaments in thousands of images from telescopes. So a computer was a necessary device, and this is where Dana's immersion in the world of artificial intelligence began. A few years later and after the publication of the research results, she realized that AI, despite its capabilities, is still built on a simplified intelligence model. “It seems that until now humanity has been very good at discovering the laws of the Universe using its natural intelligence. There is no doubt that we have created amazing technologies that improve and simplify our lives, including those of artificial intelligence. AI can make the world more favorable for the further development of humanity, but we are the ones to set this task to it”, the scientist said.
